View Full Version : Oct. 20th Sat Night Run!!!

I am having some family over for my Son's 1st Birthday

My brother had asked me to take him out on run Sat Night the 20th. probably meet at airdown by 6:30pm leave for trail no later then 7pm

We will need a Trail Leader as I don't know exactly how to get to some of them.

Anyone is welcome to come and join us... I would like to keep this run to a 10-15 rigs tops considering it is a night run.

I think min requirements would be 3 inch lift( unless you dont mind scraping )
32's bare min. Recovery gear, tow points, and not mind a few scratches or body damage as anything is possible.

I would recommend having a 3 inch lift, 33's at least one traction device, but I am not going to say you can't go... but I dont recommend any stock vehicles, unless you dont mind body damage, and lots of scraping.

We are going to do upper woodpecker and lower ajax meet at cottonwood rd. air down off of 79
Hopefully we can do these runs in good time, and have a excellent time doing them.. I am eager to hit these two trails, as I have never done them and want to get them loaded in the gps.

Who is going to lead? I think Allen had mentions he can lead these two trails.

Well, I was a total beginner when I first started and actually burned some circuits or something haha. Tom had to help me rewire them. But he showed me a lot of things and I understand it all really well. I'll take a picture of them after work today, nothing complex. I still need to add two more to the rear. I did go wheeling with them doing 40+ on dirt roads though and none of them were hit with rocks, so the locations of the first four seems to be great so far. I'll get some pics later today after work!

Hey Cronoh, do you have a pic of your rock lights? How did they turn out? What did you use? Adam sayd we can make it... I am not looking to tear up my rig either.

Heres some pictures I took tonight, sorry they are TERRIBLE quality, I don't have a digital camera with me, so I had to use my cell phone :)

I used the cheap $15 lights from WalMart. In the future, I might replace them, btu they work really good for how cheap theyw ere. $15 a pair, and then about $3 for 10ft of 16 gauge wire, along with another $3 for 10ft of 12 gauge wire. I think $2 for a box of butt connectors, and thats about all it took (already had a relay). Once i figured out how to do it all (Thanks Tom!) adding the two in the front only took about 30 minutes (After also rewiring the other two to have some slack in the wires). To add two more in the rear however, I will need to upgrade wire or add another relay. Not sure yet ;) Let me know what you think :D

Heres the first 3, with the lights turned on (Pics just in driveway, the lights arent quite as bright as they appear in the pictures, I don't think.)

http://www.enmity.ws/RockLights1.jpg
http://www.enmity.ws/RockLights2.jpg
http://www.enmity.ws/RockLights3.jpg

Then, here are where I placed them. The first picture shows the ones for the middle, I put them in some random hole I found, as you can see under the body right near the front door. This hole was hard to access though, and I will consider moving these lights in the future.
http://www.enmity.ws/RockLights4.jpg

The lights for the front are mounted on the small metal flap that is the barrier for the front side of the tire-wells. It works really well, they are tucked away nicely, and much out of harms way. Sorry for the pictures, my phone dosn't handle darkness very well at all. That plus an almost dead maglite = no help :)

ademster
10-09-2007, 11:27 PM
not to mention they are very bright for the price... i hve had mine up against the rocks.. and they havent busted...

just just suck down a lot of amps... but thats what relays are for.. and a 130amp alt.

but i have a el cheapo interstate battery... I just bought a red top... but just my luck... My wife's car battery died, so she got the new red top... instead of mt jeep..
Next month I will buy another Red top and also buy a Yellow top then build my custome two battery tray.

Cronoh
10-10-2007, 09:38 AM
I would suggest putting them all on one switch, otherwise your going to have a ton of switches :p Because, I have 4, but I want 6 at least, possibly 8, then i can see everything under there :p 8 might be overkill though...

Holy sheet those look bright! Hey if you go more than 4 let me know, there is a type of relay that has 2 DC+ outs instead of just the one. It would be really easy to add another wire to the block and safer than adding more to the existing power wire. BTW you left some tools in my garage. Bring more beer if you want them back.

ahahah, you can keep em :p Yeah, I wasn't planning on putting any more lights on that wire, unless I went down to like 8 gauge or something super fat. But I can just get a different relay that i can run 2x 12 gauges off of? Hook me up with some info on it and ill check it out :)

shouldnt number ten wire work

Cronoh
10-11-2007, 11:43 AM
Actually I think you are right. Heres the logic:
6x 55 watt lights = 330 watts = 27.5 Amps.

10 Gauge Wire rating = 55 Amps

When loomed, and sitting next to many other wires, we must account for heat however, which stu-offroad estimates lowering the constant duty limit of 10 Gauge wire to: 33 Amps.

So, I guess it would actually work, just running 10 gauge :) Correct me if I missed something or have some wrong logic in here.

Damn, I'm gonna have to bail out. Just picked up my latest project and I need to get it ready to pass smog. Plus, the boss decided I need to help her parents rip up carpet and paint all day Saturday. Wish I could make it.

I am out, no tires, rear end whinning and cluncking, steering clunking when I turn right, front diff leaking, and a general all around loseness of the whole front end. All of this and I have only ran Box Canyon recently. I may be down for a while depending on what she looks like when I crawl underneath

What a great time! 9 jeeps and a toyota pickup showed! We ran Lower and Upper Woodpecker and made it thru without any major problems!

we got to the big rocks at the begining of Upper Woody and someone pretzeled their tie-rod! Meanwhile at the back sombody slashed open both his driver side tires in two places! Sombody kept loosing their passenger spring and once I heard someone say they had stopped to put their muffler in the back...... but considering the trail and the darkness it was far less than what could have happened!

Let me know when you guys want to do Ajax at nite!

Just got in, great run tonight. Always good to see familiar faces and meet a couple new ones. I was the one who taco'd my tie rod, big thanks to Bill for lending me his, I had a spare but it was a little beat up too so we decided to use his. I definitely have to put that trail on one of my top favs.

I made it home safely...

I am the one who slashed both tires, side walls double punctures. I wish I had my spare tires hahaha

I also am the one who had the exhaust bust again...

and also lost the front left Locking hub.

I did drive though, my brother drove the trails, and had a blast..

Everyone post up pictures.

As soon as Allen said that someone bent their tie rod I knew exactly who it was. Jim you definately need a bigger rod

Wow that was actually a fun run. I'm the one who lost my front spring ( TWICE!) Call me fat bob :D

We also tore our top on the window rock going into upper woody. The picture of Tim's rod is after it was straightened quite a bit. :D

The day got a little long after doing the TM clean up and having to drive all the way from out here. Sorry if I got a little testy on the way back Allen, just didn't want the group to get separated in an area no one knew :)

Well I gotta do some real work on the rig. Transfer skid is really twisted, and I need to start putting on some replacement parts but I'm up for another run soon .

The tie rod that folded up on me last night is the same one I bent last week. I guess when you bend it once it's not a good idea to try and straighten it and re-use it. I'm pretty sure I didn't catch it on anything, I think it got bent last night just from the stress of trying to turn the wheel when a tire was against something. Eh, live and learn, I'm still a little new at this. Something stronger will definitely be in the works soon.

Just got home at 3pm today and passed out 'till now. I didn't make it back as early as I planned but it was 100% worth it. I had a great time meeting all of you guys, most of you I haven't met before, some I have.

Raul and I had never been out to the trails in FJ, let alone at night so we were a little more cautious than some in the group. Maybe it was the darkness, lack of experience or the 200 mile drive home that was at the root of it...maybe all three. I felt like by the end of the trail I was more ready for obstacles I had bypassed earlier. Next time I will hit more adventurous lines. Last time I wheeled I broke my front axle so I guess that was still in my memory too.

Raul had a little trouble with a leaky rear main and couldn't get it into 4low until he got up on the rock at the Firehole...then he found out his hub hadn't been engaged properly...after the firehole his 4low worked fine and he got out or 3 wheel drive and into 4...after that he had a lot less trouble.

It was his first trip with azvjc and it wont be his last.

Thanks Adam for setting it up, Allen for leading and everyone else for making it a good time.

Here's a few of my Pics...most of them didn't come out. I saw like half dozen scorpions and didn't get one pic...Oh well, always next time.
