Subject: [az_vjc] a proposed 'run'
Me and Len were talking last night, discussing how we spend the next day
after runs maintaining our Jeeps.
I have always found things that needed to be tightened and adjusted after a
day of off roading. I don't think there is anyway you can treat your Jeep
like we do and just get away with the 3000 mile oil change.
Well, for those without tools or know how, I propose a 'run'.
I say instead of a day of wheeling, we should have a day of Jeep
"check-up's". I have no idea of when but the where is even harder to fiqure
out. If ya'll could throw out some suggestions or thoughts that would be
cool. I have a good tool set and would gladly spend time under anyone's
Jeep making sure it's all good. Anyone else up for this?

Dupont Cabin is in the Sierra Anchas between Punkin Center and the Young
Highway. I don't use GPS so I can't give you precise coordinates, but it is
located on FR236 (?). I'll be running the trail from east to west and hope to
include JR Canyon. JR Canyon has some steep rocky sections, some pretty good
washouts and a tree that might have to be chopped down if we can't drive under
it. If we bypassed the canyon, the trail would rate 2.5-3.0. If we can get
into the canyon the trail rating will probably be 3.0-4.0. Stock 4x4s might
get banged up on this trail -- my ZJ sustained rocker panel damage on this
trail when it was still in stock configuration. We'll be camping out on this
trail. It can be done in a day, but it's a long day.
This is a pre-run, so the plan is to first go to the Pleasant Valley Ranger
Station north of Young to (hopefully) get a key for JR Canyon and then head
south through Young and take off eastward on FR609. From there, we'll be
branching off toward JR Canyon and make our way to the cabin. From there we'll
continue heading west toward Punkin Center and home. We'll be camping out
either in JR Canyon or at the cabin.

Subject: "Maintenance Run"
Ok, A maintenance run would be great. The benefit of having others look over your vehicle for items that need repair can be quite revealing, as two or more people rarely see the same thing... couple of questions though, B-4 we do something like this don't we need to make sure we're not going to get run off before everyone has had a chance to have their vehicle Inspected/maintenanced? Could we come up with a place that has COVERED PARKING, (ie awnings, parking garages, airplane hangars, etc.) ? In other words, we still live in the desert and it gets hot!! I would prefer to get permission from the owner of the property before doing this. Alot of liabilities involved from accidents resulting from work being done to unforseen mishaps. What kind of work are we going to be doing? Is this just nuts and bolt tightening, or are we going to inspect/ repair minors like u-joints, repack bearings, oil changes etc.? All this could probably be arranged with the proper interest and planning, Which leads me to who can we designate to orchestrate our efforts in the pursuit of this? I think Nick should be the goto guy on this one, and all of us should "brainstorm" online the scope of repairs and inspections, different locations to have the "maintenance run", Who's going to bring what supplies or tools etc. I will see if it is possible to find a suitable place with some form of shade, no guarantees what part of town it'll be in, but I will shoot for something centrally located. any ideas, or someone else who already has an ideal spot, e-mail me!!

I would like to do this run. When we proposed a couple of dates for the
Lockett Meadow/Cinders, a lot of you said 7/9-7/11 would be good. But this
conflicts with the Dupont cabin run.
We could postpone the Cinders run to a later date, or we could do the Cinders
as well for those who don't want to do Dupont, and do it again at a later
date.

getting there is alot less. I wouldn't mind going to Dupont instead of the

Suggestion:
As far as the location for doing a maintenance "once-over," I would suggest
using a church parking lot. Most of the strip malls, grocery stores/etc.
don't directly own their property (with the exception of Basha's) and
approval can get tricky. However, most likely a church would be pretty easy
to work with, or other entity that directly owns their parking lot.
There was a suggestion from someone regarding their apt. parking lot, but
nearly every apt. complex forbid tenants from working on their autos in the
parking lot. It can be easy for one person to get away with it, but if we end
up with a bunch of people, I wouldn't want to risk anyone getting in trouble.
Or, how about using Butcher Jones and then heading out to play in the coves?
(or some other park area)

Subject: This weekend in Tucson
Hi all!
If anybody is interested we, the Tucson/Southern
Arizona Chapter are having a run to the Tanks
Saturday. We are planning on meeting at 12 noon
at the Abco on Tanque Verde and Catalina Hwy.
We will be spending the night and coming back to
town Sunday sometime. Scott or Jeffery please feel
free to correct the time or add anything....
Three Tanks is three HUGE natural pools fed by
underground springs and rain run-off. The pools
are very deep and can be jumped into from 12 to 20
foot cliffs. There is even good low water, sandy
spots for small children to play in.
Good area to camp and the nightime temps
should be pretty nice (upper 60s low 70s)
This is in the Redington area, far Easide of
Tucson.
Anyone interested, show up! or e-mail me before
5PM Friday.

Subject: Maintanance run
I am really happy about the response on this maintanance run so far.
This may actually turn out to be quite a project so I'll do my best to get some serious organization here. I'm gonna make a list of priorities here that will probably be re-aranged and added to as time goes.
1. Location - Ideal would be a large, covered area. Paved ground and access to water. A public access area. Electricty. This part will actually take alot of work. We will probably have to comprimise here and there. We definatly need suggestions on this.
2. Tools etc. - I will make a list, starting today of tools needed for basic maintanance. Please everyone, send me a list of tools you deam neccassary and I will add them to the list. Also, if ya'll can tell me what devices you have and are willing to use, I will add to the list who is bringing what. I'm sure socket sets etc. are in plentifull supply, so if anyone has any specialty tools that would be great to be able to add your name. Also, as far as how technical we are going to get on this, if anyone has any special maintanance requests I will make a list of that also and see what we can do for you tool and know how wise. I'm not quite sure how far we should go on this part but most maintanance we do should probably stick to what we can do "in the field". There are others here that know better than me those limits, let me know.
3. Hazardus waste - I think it is entirelly possible to do all the fluid changes on this day. Problem of course is disposal. Oil is no problem if we can get enough certified containers ( i.e. not milk jugs). If someone knows or can check on the deal with antifreeze, transmission and transfer case fluids, please do.
4. Supplies - I think if everyone will just bring along a little more than they need themselves we should be fine. Here I am talking about paper towls, rags, water, hand cleaner etc. (also haynes manuals!)
5. Jeep parts and pieces - This will probably take some work also. Obviously during the maintanance we will find nuts, bolts, fluids and other things we will need. For those who have special maintanace request and those who know what they need done I think basicly you can bring what you need. For those who find problems, we should schedule this on a day when auto part stores and the dealer is open, this way we can make a parts run if needed.
6. When - Since this may take abit lets plan on maybe a month or so. If all goes really well maybe alittle earlier.
That's what I can think of for now.

We could postpone the Cinders run to a later date, or we could do the Cinders
as well for those who don't want to do Dupont, and do it again at a later
date.

I agree Dan, there are fewer people up in the Dupont area. And the traffic
getting there is alot less. I wouldn't mind going to Dupont instead of the
cinders.
