My dad's customer is looking to swap out his engine in his Hummer H1. He wants the Duramax + tranny. Also, he needs it installed.
Sponsors, send me PMs on parts+labor amount and details on what's involved.
Last quote he received was more than what he paid for the damn thing:rolleyes:
Thank You.

Would be cheaper or cost effective to buy a 2006 H1 alpha series with a duramax.

ya right. He bought a mint condition '95 H1 at an auction merely a few thousand above what you were selling your jeep for. The new Alpha is probable 5x the price...more cost effective to do the swap.
Again, I want SHOPS to give me quotes.

I recall reading that GM had do to some pretty extensive modifications to get the Duramax to fit in the H1, and I found some information on Wikipedia...
I think Jason is right Neal, here is an excerpt from the Hummer H1 wiki page, if I were running a shop, I am not sure that I would give a quote... At least not without doing a ton of serious research first... You might want to contact some folks that really specialize in Hummers just to see if even they can do this kind of modification...
The "Alpha" was an extensively re-engineered H1 that was equipped with GM's Duramax Diesel and 5-speed Allison transmission...
The engineering team chose the engine variant out of the GMT560 truck (the C4500) because it packaged better into the H1 engine bay; however, 23 engine component changes were required and the team had to do a 2.5 inch body lift to accommodate the taller engine and its turbo housing. The GMT560 engine calibration was used with minimal modification; engine output was 300 horsepower and 520 ft·lbf of torque. Due to the Duramax engine being equipped with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation and an internal engine oil cooler, the team had to deal with a 40 percent heat rejection increase to engine coolant. However, they were unable to increase the size of the cooling pack between the air-lift brackets that protrude from the hood. This meant dramatically re-engineering the fan system by putting the fan directly under the coolpack and driving it through a special gearbox directly off the crankshaft damper pulley. Several other cooling system modifications were required to assist with cold starting from minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Other major modifications included the use of special high-strength steel in the chassis frame, a more powerful steering gear; quieter axle differentials, redesign of the geared hubs to use quieter helical gears, new induction, exhaust and electrical power systems; and re-engineering of the fuel supply and filtration system.
Off road the much higher torque of the engine, combined with a lower gearing ratio (about 44.5 to 1 in low lock), made the truck much more powerful. The Duramax engine delivered more torque at lower engine speeds than the 6.5L, so the team actually had to calibrate the torque management to protect certain driveline parts. This new torque profile coupled with centralized tire inflation and AM General's new interior resulted in the complete re-engineering of everything except the carryover body made of aluminum beams and panels.

That's why it would be easier to put a big gas motor in it...

It really made no sense to why they spent the $$$$ on the 2006 alpha and then dropped the h1....thats an iconic vehicle. It would be like Jeep dropping the wrangler......
No neal I'm not a shop, BUT engine swaps are very pricey and some not worth doing....

whether or not its worth it can only be determined only by the owner

A guy I know just had a BBC put in his H1 a few months ago to replace the piggy 6.2 that was in it. For a huge heavy vehicle, you could be first off of the light every time with that motor in it now.

I would be, but I dont have a shop to do the work.. I lov doing stuff like this.
the Only problem I see with this swap is...
the turbo, the turbo is a lot bigger then the original 6.5! Not to mention it is on top of the engine but that can be easily fixed by make bending and fabrication pipe and brakets to relocate it... and extend the turbo electrical.... simple
Would be a very bad *** swap though.

I would rather put a Cummins in for a diesel, the duramax sucks in comparison...I owned a Cummins beforew the Jeep and I have driven my step dads Duramax...Cummins is the better motor. The Cummins is also much easier to work on.
Seriously though, if I could do anything in a H1 engine bay it would be to throw a HOT big block Chevy motor in it.

I thought about the Cummins, but it's not GM, the whole vehicle would have to be rewired(I think).

The Duramax out performs the Cummins.

The Duramax out performs the Cummins.
Worlds fastest pickup truck is a Cummins.
Cummins is cheaper and nets more hp and touque per $ spent (12 valve especially)
Cummins is more reliable.
Cummins had 2/3rds the moving parts.
I could go on and on...I used to be really into diesels and in no way does the Duramax "out perform" the Cummins. Once you start diesel dragging, you will wish you had a 12 valve Cummins, that is all there is about that. I've seen both brands put down ridiculus numbers, but seems like more Cummins guys are pulling those numbers more often.
If I had to go gasoline I would go Chevy. Not diesel.
After driving my old Dodge 12 valve and my step dads Duramax confidently say the Cummins is much nicer a motor. Both better than the Powerstrokes though.
Chevy guys will never admit it though;)
