syck can be anything from 2.0 all the way up to a 4.0 if you find the right lines. stockers are very welcome in syckamore.

Actually I wish I could come and help clean up on Saturday but the 21st is the only day my wifes parents will watch our kids. This is my first chance to introduce my wife to rock crawling and trail running so it is a pretty special occassion! I can't wait until the first steep incline. She is sure to pucker....

I could probably make future clean up runs if I come solo...

AzCoyote

OK. Suggestions on meeting places and times?

Also CB Channel?

Who of our attendees is most knowledgable about the area?
Will you take the job of being leader?

Thanks,

if I don't go to the dunes I'm in. I know sycamore pretty well, but only as a dirtbiker. so I'm probably not a good choice for lead. since most of the trails I know are whooped out horribly, or so narrow a quad wouldn't fit, let alone a jeep

Can Anyone Give Me Directions From The West Valley

AzCoyote
10-05-2007, 10:56 AM
Sycamore creek is north of the Turn Off for Saguaro lake....

I was thinking we could meet at the gas station across from Fort McDowell casino or at the turn to Saguaro.

The 87 starts at McDowell and Country Club (more or less).

I usually come up the 101 and head east on McDowell until I get to the 87 then North...

I believe you can also get to the 87 via the Fountain Hills area...

Where exactly are you coming from in West Valley?

If you look up the map for how to get to Fort McDowell Casino, you are 90% there. The last few miles are straight north of the casino....

Jeep4thefun
10-05-2007, 10:13 PM
Sounds like we might have a pretty good size group!!! ;) Should be alot of fun :D

I posted this to the calendar as requested....

Do we have a leader from anyone who has responded?

I do not know the area well at all so if we can assign a lead and a tail then we should have a great time on the run.

Next week I will consolidate the list of those who are in and post it to the OP.

Thanks!

I'm in and I'm pretty sure Cronoh (my brother) will go... That's close to us

Cronoh
10-10-2007, 01:37 PM
Hey, yeah, I can come. Heres the deal though with Sycamore (At least the last time I drove by it (This past weekend)). There is a lot of road construction going on on the 87 in that area, so coming from the valley on the 87, I think the first turnoff to Sycamore is closed. you can access it if you are heading into the valley, but I believe they have barriers blocking it off from our side. You can also enter at Lower sycamore, this is across the street from the Four Peaks turnoff. From my experience, Sycamore is more of a big play place for ATVs and Dirt Bikes, but I guess there is some trails there. I am not sure of their locations though, so don't count me in as a leader. You can get to it from the west valley by taking the freeways to the 60 towards globe, exiting on the 87 (Country Club), and following that north, or exiting the 101 at Mcdowell and follow that to the east until it connects with the 87 (about 2-3 miles). Also, you can take the 101 to Shea (If your coming from northern phoenix or such) and Shea loops around to the 87 in Fountain Hills. I have never been to "Lower Sycamore", but if you have to, you can jsut go to that turn off and Uturn on the 87, to come back to the main turnoff for sycamore creek. Anyways, I'm done blabbering, I'll probably show up, mark as tentative :)

SquarEyd
10-10-2007, 06:41 PM
Include me as tentative. Hopefully i can go, i always look for a chance to get out of the valley and into nature, even if it is just Sycamore! :D

Sycamore is north of Butcher Jones so it may be the one and the same place... Trails mostly as far as I know... Look at the link on page one to see a video of the area shot and posted by someone on You Tube.

I should be able to go, i work on sat also so sunday would be great. i have not run sycamore but i have run squeeze a couple of times and that is right there also. i don't know if it is full of water right now but we were able to make it the whole way last time. Sunday at 9am would be fine for me, and i am up for running what ever.

if we do squeeze i can lead it but the rest of the trails i would have to follow.

Jeep4thefun
10-15-2007, 09:06 PM
All the trails in that area i showed are open with no water...
You got to admit tho its funner with water lol...
But at least none of us would get stuck....
It would be cool to run to the squeeze then hit that widow maker hill on way back then run the wash down to the verde and make a cross...
So far nobody is sure of what they really want to do...
I am game for anything tho...
Throw out some ideas guys ;)

Here is a pic of the squeeze as of 10-13-07 no water...

See i am twisted around....
I thought these guys were gonna hit the squeeze from lower sycamore...
From the way to that water hole to the squeeze would be upper sycamore right ?... Not only that but to get there from that way i would think would be a little rough... But i dont know have never made it to the squeeze that way have allways hit that hole and had to turn around lol.... But that was a few months ago when there was a bunch of water out there in that area...
Dont know what is like now... If someone has recent pics of that water hole please post em ;)

SHNIPE
10-15-2007, 09:36 PM
you can get in from the 87 to lower. you just have to go to the upper entrance and flip a U turn. we did it the other day.

Heres the water hole from the south side as of 10/14. the normal thick greasy mud and about 6-8 ft deep? most of the holes that have been dug are WAY deep so it might be deeper than that. just asuming based on past depths and water height

HI All,
When you say stock, does that mean stock GC? or just wranglers? I have not ran sycamore yet, did four peaks a month ago by myself, which is across from sycamore I believe. If my GC can make it I will attend, close to my house and not too early in the morning for a meet time. Let me know if my GC and I are ok, do not want to hold anyone up on the run. :D

I am going to be bringing my whole family i think.
Me,Wife,Twin Boys (8),Baby Girl (1) Should be fun... But heck they are used to being out with me for like 3-6 hours... ;)
Not sure when will be done but if you needed to leave earlly the trails are so light that you shouldnt have a problem getting out of there on your own...

Hi gang. If any run was ever calling my name, this is it. I know the entire Sycamore area and all of the crisscrossing maze of trails that go for miles out there. That has been my 'backyard playgroung' for 25 years and I never get tired of playing out there. I have been wanting to put together a Sycamore trip exactly like this for quite some time now - one that any stock Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Liberty and any other club member can do. Beginner drivers would be fine, but be prepared to test your comfort zone a bit. (More explanation coming).

So, if you all want, I'm offering to lead. I can guarantee awesome views, fun trails with a few challenges and probably a pucker moment or two. The whole family would enjoy this. I know the route we will take, but it doesn't have a name really. My close friends and I call it the 'Loop' because we start at one end and loop around the 'back way' to the other end. And the 'Loop' varies - it can be short or long depending on how far back you want to go (lots of trails/choices). I'll estimate about 3 to 4 hours from airdown to airup.

Since Lower Syc can't be accessed by north-bound traffic, we will start at Middle Syc (Four Peaks Rd/Sugarloaf entrance) and loop around to Lower Syc and end up at Widowmaker where those who wish to play on the hill may do so with the rest of us taking pics. You can come back down the hill, or follow the ridge over to the main road out, whatever you want. The trip will be a nice combination of long, sandy washes, a few rocks to climb on, and quite a few steep, narrow rollercoaster hills with a couple of rutted, washout sections that will put you off-camber and make you pucker. But with a spotter, a beginner stock Jeeper will make it through with a HUGE smile afterwards (assuming, of course you watch and listen to your spotter:D). We will not be running the Squeeze, we will bypass it (by a long shot). For experienced Jeepers, there are plenty of optional things to play on along the way - especially hill climbs.

I do want to say that as with any 4WD trip, there is always a possibility of scraping skidplates, desert pinstriping (branches/bushes) and even rolling over, but it will be minimal.

Damn, I feel like a door-to-door salesman all of a sudden! I really have to stop being so long-winded!:o Anyways, if you would like me to lead, I will. 9am sounds good - at the gas station across from Fort McDowell casino on the Beeline Hwy (Hwy 87). I'll post maps shortly along with my own Youtube video clips at Sycamore and maybe a few pics.

David C
10-18-2007, 09:43 PM

Quick questions assuming my junk will be back together by this evening.

Does the trail make a loop or do I have to hit 87 to come back to my trailer?

Will a rig with full widths actually fit through the squeeze still? I haven't been out there in years, but I remember it being a tight fit for my rig and I'm quite a bit wider now than I was then. If it matters I'm 84" outside to outside tire.

Thanks,
Sean

There is a map in the OP and on page 4. Looks like it comes back out to 87 at a different spot so a run on 87 would be needed....

No idea on the rest but David C will probably know....

**EDIT**

Okay, just checked it.....glad I did. I thought you were running from the lower Sycamore enterance to the other end. Maybe I should drop my tow rig and trailer at that end and just drive down to the air down spot first thing in the morning......hmmmm.

Hey Sean, you can leave your tow rig at the airdown spot. You can get back to it relatively fast and easy without getting on the highway. There are actually a few different ways to get you back there without going through the Squeeze. And we, as a group will not be running Squeeze Rock. When we finish the group run, I'll run with you back to your tow rig if you want.

Oh, I made the incorrect assumption you guys were running Squeeze Rock for the trail.....

Thanks very much for the generous offer of taking me back to my trailer.

Unfortunately, things haven't gone as well as I'd hoped today and it doesn't look like I'll be making the run tomorrow after all.

Sorry for cancelling at the last minute like this....unfortunately, that just seems to be my luck as of late.

Take care and have fun guys.

The 'Loop' varies - it can be short or long depending on how far back you want to go (lots of trails/choices). I'll estimate about 3 to 4 hours from airdown to airup.

Hope this helped ;)

pictures? oh yeah, pictures... ;) I think I actually took a couple when I wasn't focused on navigating the, at times, challenging terrain. Even ran the left chute of Widowmaker. Pretty tight up through the middle but I think my tires just sorta bounced off the walls keeping me in the groove.

I have to agree that we looked awesome coming out of nowhere with so many, then lining up in solid lines at the base without even being cued. The bikers and wheelers already there studied our rigs for clues as to who we were, and found our AZVJC stickers loud and proud.

Was happy to join in a super trip alongside some new to more rugged aspects of wheeling. If they're like me, it'll just aggravate the "bug" they already have.

Thanks to David C for leading, and the "other" George for tailgunning. :D

Hi gang! Sorry it's been 4 days since the trip before I could log on here. I've been totally swamped with work. I have about 30 minutes now to read and post.

Wow, what a huge turnout for the run! We had a total of 23 Jeeps counting the red ZJ (Bustedknuckles5) that caught up to us in the rock garden. Normally, that many rigs could have serious delays and other complications but we actually made it through in good time and had few problems. We left the airdown at 10am and arrived at Widowmaker about 2pm, with a half hour stop for lunch at a great viewpoint. Playtime on Widowmaker was a blast but that hill is getting a little easier to climb now. We ended the official run there since some of us wanted to play more and some needed to go. This was my first time leading a large group and I have to say I was very concerned the whole time that everyone was having fun and that we were all staying together. Big thanks to George (Number 7) for tailgunning and to those who relayed communication when needed. We got spread out to over a half mile at times. Thanks to all of you for the comments and feedback. I just skimmed the thread talking about April's Jeep and I feel terrible that she took that kind of damage. I thought she did a fantastic job of driving, I had no idea she damaged something. I'm going back and reading that closely now and see what I can do to help her. I'm so sorry April that your rig got so beat up!:o I have pics and video but my time for this session is up. More tonight!

David C
10-26-2007, 08:41 AM
Hi George, thanks so much for tailgunning out there! I didn't see much of you on the trip due to 21 rigs between us! But, you know, for that many Jeeps in one group, we made great time and had very few problems! It was a great day! But we definitely need to go out there some more with a small group.

Now, do I know the Mesquite Wash area? This is a rhetorical question, right?:D What do you want to know? Geologic makeup, spatial distribution of common desert flora, common wildife of the area, significant history, hydrologic info, official ownership, current Tonto NF conditions regarding the area, elevation, township and range, long/lat coords, proximity to major landmarks? :D Or do you just want to know if I know the trails out there?

Mmm, nope...

:D:D
But of course!! Mesquite Wash, although recently closed by Tonto NF due to flood damage, is the way to Rocker Panel Pass (then on to middle and lower Sycamore) on the west side of the Beeline. On the east side, you can get to Four Peaks Rd going south and quite a ways upstream (north) in Sycamore taking you to the next couple turnoffs from the Beeline. Mesquite Wash is the true Upper Sycamore Creek. Let's go play! Oh, wait, I have to leave for work now - we are swamped! I'm working 7 days this week, and today started at 4:30am for me. It won't end until about 10pm, but I do have a couple long breaks in there. And this one is just about over! Gotta run. Talk to ya more about this soon.:)
