Kelly,
You did not get a pic of the tarantula that day we saw the toad?
I have seen all of the above plus a small herd of deer at Bulldog and Rattler on Sunflower. Never seen a javalina yet. I hear they are pretty mean.

When I was little I told my Uncle I had found a 'Horny' toad. He asked me how I knew how the toad was feeling, and I gave him the ol' deer in the head-lights look.
I sometimes wonder if he knew I'd remember that as an adult and understand what he meant. I think he did.

Maybe try having an appreciation for animals and nature next time...it is mentalities like this that make us all look bad. As an off road enthusiast, avid hunter and gun rights advocate it makes me sick when people murder non-game species for fun or because of their ignorance and fear.

Here a few I found, I saw the Lizard out in the woods and the fish and turtle were at Fossil Creek. The turtle was awesome. I swam with him for an hour or so in a huge clear pool of water...and I never had the urge to blow him away either.

When it happened to me I honestly didn't see the damn thing till I heard it. I drew my gun on it as I backed away. I agree with you a 100% but I also understand while in that instance I backed away slow and everything was fine. But if that thing would have shown one sign of striking, I'll take the guilt of shooting a creature I was trespassing on, than that long drive out of the back country to the hospital. Murdering out of fear is usually self defense.
I also (and I know I'll get all sorts of crap for this) have never understood the difference between killing game animals vs. non game animals. I like animals more than most people I meet. I am not a hunter and never will be. When I run into people off trails especially up towards Happy Jack and they have there trophy on the hood of there pick up. I think about the fact that they robbed me of possibly seeing that elk out in the wild on one of my hikes and they robbed the elk of just being a elk out in the woods enjoying life. I honestly want to walk up to the guy, shoot him dead, and put him on the hood of his pick up next to the elk. I think hunting should be a sport, but we should attach motion guided firearms to the game so they could at least have a chance to defend themselves. I have alot of friends who are hunters that when asked if the deer had a chance to fire back would they still hunt, and the answer is usually no.
Sorry for the rant, I went out wheeling today and came back to all this banning with already closed forums. You seem like good people Captain Morgan, I just thought you giving heat to fatboypup about killing snakes when you are an "avid hunter" didn't make much sense. I think an animal is an animal. We should try to kill as few of ALL of them as possible.
Oh, and thanks for not blowing away the turtle:D
CaptainMorgan
10-28-2007, 11:12 PM
My hunting is based upon a certain spirituality and set of cultural values I hold. Sorry if I offended anyone but I really like snakes and they dont taste good. Personally I feel you should use the skins and all the meat of what you kill. If you like snake meat and value the snake it is not the same crime just to kill out of fear.
Self defense is another issue...if I had to kill a snake I would, I would just make sure I had to.
Another thing is that being a hunter and outdoorsman I pay fees and support the AZGFD with my finacial donations and the money they get from the hunting liscenses, stamps and tags. With that money the azgfd funds studies and monitors the health of the ecosystems in which the animals live. So next time you see a trophy buck and feel bad you didn't see it alive, realize that the legal taking of that buck helps pay for the programs that help to preserve his species so we can continue to see his kind for generations to come. Without the azgfd the animals we all care for would be in more danger than they are with the surrent system.
ALSO, I thought the comment and the picture posted by fatboypup was a bit crass; this is an animal picture thread and he posts pics of snake loads...I guess I figured he enjoyed killing snakes...maybe that was an unfair assumtion.

Nevermind, I just cooked up some BBQ. Thank you to the man that killed that cow. It was delicious.:D
Oh, and Captain Morgan, you are certainly right about the AZGFD. I read up on how the system works and would agree it is a humane way of keeping the moron shooters at Table Mesa from going up north and poaching every animal in sight. I stand corrected.
If someone needs to ban me for my previous post its okay. But just to warn you, in my boredom I may go absolutely crazy and by a Prius!

Gila Monster in Red Creek in the rain. We were trying to get out of Red Creek before the water level came up and saw a hawk take off from a branch about 20 feet in the air. As it took off, it dropped something. When we got closer, this injured Gila Monster was swimming in the puddle. We helped him get to dry ground and continued on our way.

Have come across a few rattlers, gila monsters, centipedes, javalinas, and a eagle. The eagle I can not find my pic of. I think it may have been one of the ones I lost when the computer fried awhile back. That was a spectacular shot. It was sitting upon a fence post out on the backway to CK. I also was not able to get a pic of one flying out by FR98 aka Log Corral.
Just a reminder all it is snake season now and they are going to be hungry and irritable after hybernating.

Spotted a few more up in the Table Mesa area on Saturday.
A big Gila Monster with a stub tail.

Three burros. From the topo software I have, I think this was on Wild Burro Mesa. I guess we know why they named it that.

Wayco... DEAD ON MAN!!!
when Jim and I were trying to catch him to check it out this is exactly what he did
When the Chuckwalla senses danger, it scurries between rocks and lodges itself tightly in crevices by inflating itself.I
they inflate them selves pretty damn wide and thick...

With all of the Gila Monsters in this thread, it seems like they are common. I'd love to see one out in the wild, but have never had the opportunity.

Yep, those be a few Chucawallas. I know, something you would think were from Australia :) I think they're endangered but you see them once in a while around our parts. You washed your hands afterwards, right?

Wow. You've got me beat there for sure. Always wanted to see a wild Mtn Lion (Puma), but maybe not that close.
My strangest close encounter was at mid-day down along the Lower Salt River walking a trail through the thick Mesquite trees, a young Javelina came walking right up to me and stopped about 4 or 5 feet away, looked up at me and gave a little inquisitive grunt like he wanted me to play fetch or something. I stopped dead to look and listen for the rest of his family, but there were no other sounds - just him looking at me. I slowly reached down and picked up a little stick and tossed it towards him to shoo him along and he jumped back into the brush. Then he came back around the other side of the brush and again stood there and gave a little grunt like he wanted to play. Now, I was always told never to play fetch at mid-day with a strange Javelina, so I just slowly continued on my path as he stood there and watched me go.
Welcome to the club, btw.:)
