Hey bro,
I wasn't trying to bash you or anything... Just saying You don't know whos
out there reading thses posts..
I would suggest installing a kill switch of some sort. Or a fuel pump
cutoff switch. Then they WON'T take it without your knowing..

And Yes MY XJ has been on thoes lists too and still is..
All I can say is Tank God I have a kill switch because if I didn't I
wouldn't have my XJ after last Wednesday.. I can deal without the stero
for a few more weeks but being with out my XJ would really SUCK....

Take it easy

More than likely, the problem is in your speed sensor (the black plastic
housing on your transfer case which holds the speedometer gear), it could be
loose or the connector to it could be loose or dirty. If you need any help,
feel free to give me a call (602) 524-7632.

I would first check your connection where the wiring harness connects to
the sending unit. (this assumes that only the speedometer is not
functioning and your other gauges are OK) If you've not done this
before, this should help you:

http://www.stu-offroad.com/speedo/speed1.htm

Although not as likely, it is possible that your sending unit as moved a
bit and so the gear is not engaging properly. The above link discusses
this possibility as well.

Good luck......Stu

Yep! I have bought my 'next generation' Jeep! Actaully it's a 1954

Subject: [az_vjc] Driveline advice

Hello to all,

I am back online again, after a move to Tucson from Mesa.

I have a few questions regarding the CV shafts and possible SYE kits. I have seen all the emails that have been sent discussing pros and cons of trail use, strength, etc. I have a lift on my 3" SkyJacker lift on my XJ and I have recently (now that I have to drive freeway to work) that I get a driveline vibe when I drive to work (above 55 MPH). It is only during accel that it does it.
[Siade, Randy] It does this because your U-joints are not at matching opposite angles. When they are not you will get vibration on accel, deccel or both.

I have read some of the posts (when I don't have 920 of them) and I have came across a few about pinion angle. Well, I looked under my jeep and the input of the rearend and the driveshaft are a straight line. There is a shim that is bolted into the spring pack making it sit at that angle. So, according to what I have read it must be set to accept a CV shaft and SYE?

The Big Questions:

1. Is it worth trying to remove the shim and set the pinion angles? Or should I move to a CV shaft and SYE?
[Siade, Randy] Setting your U-joint angels would be the most cost effective and leave you with the strongest drive line. First thing to do is if you do not have you cross member dropped then drop it about 1 to 1.5". Then with an angle finder (you can get them from harbor freight for $5) measure your U-joint angel coming form the transfer case. Then cut the welds at your spring perches and rotate your pinion so it is at the same but opposite angel. In other words if the t-case yoke points down 5 deg then point the diff yoke up 5 deg. Weld the perches back on and your done.

2. This is no longer a trail beater, I have to drive it at high speeds daily. So, what would be the most "cost effective" fix?

3. Does anyone make a cv shaft that can be adapter to the Xfer case without having to purhase the SYE?

Thanks in advance.

PS - Any good 4X4 shops in Tucson?

Have a good weekend!

Opposition to N.J. Assembly Bill 2238

View Current Signatures - Sign the Petition

To: New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey, New Jersey Assembly of Agriculture and Natural Resouces, New Jersey Legislative Committee, New Jersey State Assembly, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

We the undersigned as individuals and as a group oppose Assembly, No.2238
Sponsored by Assemblyman Eric Munoz, District 21 (Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union).

The following is the "Statement" excerpt from the Assembly, No. 2238

"This bill would prohibit, by law, the use of all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, off-road motorcycles, or any other similar off-road vehicles in State parks and forests. The bill would specifically prohibit the Department of Environmental Protection from granting a permit, or any other type of approval, authorizing the use of an all-terrain vehicle, dirt bike, off-road motorcycle, or any other similar off-road vehicle within any State park or forest.

Currently, the use of all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, and off-road motorcycles in State parks and forests is prohibited by regulation of the Department of Environmental Protection, except that, pursuant to regulation, the department may grant a permit for organized "special events" to operate these vehicles under prescribed conditions.

This bill would also require the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles in the Department of Transportation to provide notice of the prohibition on the use of all-terrain vehicles in State parks and forests at the time the DMV issues a registration number or renewal to the owner of an all-terrain vehicle. Lastly, this bill would amend certain sections of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes that pertain to the use of all-terrain vehicles." (End of excerpt)

Specifically we are opposed to amending the Department of Environmental Protection agency’s ability to grant a permit for organized "special events". New Jersey is home to a historic and vibrant off road motorcycle community. Currently there are 9 AMA chartered Enduro clubs in New Jersey with over 3000 members, encompassing a wide and diverse demographic of New Jersey taxpayers and registered voters. Some of these clubs have existed for over fifty years. The average age of the club members is roughly 30 to 55 years of age. These Enduro clubs have spawned National Champions, ISDE medallists, and many hours of family recreation and quality of life in New Jersey.

All club-sponsored events held on state land require that we are licensed, registered, and insured, we are all law-abiding citizens. The proceeds from these events go back to the surrounding community: commonly local Fire Departments, Ambulance Squads, Boy Scouts, and Forest restoration projects. We also support the local merchants in the towns where these races are held; canceling these events would only hurt these local small business establishments were as many as 400 riders converge for the event. All events in the forests are held on fire cuts and existing trail, with minimal disturbance of the surrounding area.
The proposed bill would eliminate all motorcycle activities in state forests. These special permit events are one-day only events and the individual state forests review the course layout ahead of time. We feel the key issue is not the ATV’s and motorcycles that are registered, but the unregistered, unlicensed, and those who disregard the existing law. Our organizations promote and encourage legal riding on the approved trails for these events only. Enacting this bill will not deter those that already disregard the law, but those of us that follow it. We respect our forests and our neighbors; please do not take them away from us. Vote no on Bill 2238

Respectfully,

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Thanks for the info. I have dropped my T-case already (1"), but it didn't get me anywhere. I guess the pinion angle or the CV is all that is left.

Is there anyone out there that's willing to take a look at my exhaust leak and weld it? I know this is just a temporary solution, but that's all I can do for now. I'll bring the Jeep to you, along with pizza, beer and payment. I'm getting dizzy from inhaling exhaust fumes!! Kris

It really depends on how hard core you wheel. Two things to remember about CVs one is they are not as strong as a standard driveline and 2 you do not get as much angularity as you do a standard drive shaft. The CV will work just fine for you unless you can ramp well over 1000. Remember to buy the special grease gun attachement so you can grease the center ball on the CV. That is the most common failure on a CV. People do not grease the center ball. CVs are also very tough to rebuild believe me I have done them before and they are not fun.

Thanks for the info. I have dropped my T-case already (1"), but it didn't get me anywhere. I guess the pinion angle or the CV is all that is left.

I have read about the AZ driveline CV shaft. Any input on that??? I definitely wouldn't have the expertise to start cutting up my driveline.

Thanks for all the info.

Hi Kris,

Depending on the year of your Jeep, there is a TSB on
that problem that the dealer should fix for free.
