For those of you following this thread here is the proper wiring for
TJ wiring to PRE-76 CJ lights:

The red wire from the CJ light goes to the Black wire with the yellow
stripe on the TJ harness and the black wire from the CJ light goes to
the Gray wire (drivers side) and Tan wire (passenger side) on the TJ
harness. They will not work properly until mounted to the grill
completing the ground so you can't test em while they are hanging out
of the vehicle.

They work fine now, both parking lights and turn signals at a proper
flash rate. MANY thanks to Chris Krieg and the rest of you for your
input.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - FR-42 - Friday, June 7, 2002

Hello All,

Dave Mendenhall lead a trail run Friday, June 7, 2002 across FR-42

This trip could have been a heckuva lot better. First of, on the first somewhat challenging section, Dave Murray (89 XJ) noticed that his bumpstops were missing, and his tires were rubbing the fenders, bending them. He did not want to continue with the trial if his fenders were goign to get all jacked up, so he attached his sway bar again and we went on. Trip was going pretty good for the first half or so, we stopped off on a shore and swam in the lake for 20 minutes or so. Then we had an interesting time getting out of the shore. It was actually quite humorous to see a TJ, XJ, and ZJ spinning sand everywhere but not moving a bit, all at the same time. Anyway, so after some overheating and tow strap pulling, we got out and made our way on to the rest of the trial. That's when the day became very long and frustrating. Dave Murray, who had his sway bar connected, could not make it up a lot of the challenges. He'd make it halfway up then couldn't go on, so Pat would come down and hook up the tow strap and help get him out. That scenario happened more times than it should have, a nd our trip up to 42 became much more time consuming that we would have ever thought. Towards the end of the trail, there was only one wya to get through the last couple challenges, and that was for Murrray to disconnect his sway bar. He did, and we finished the rest of the trial, with no real problems at all. So nothign real came from this trip, besides the fact that Murray needs to install a new set of freakin bumpstops!

We'll have photo's up soon, need to finish the roll and get it developed.

I've got a 2000 TJ. I have a 3'' suspension lift now. I'm getting a
1'' body lift to clear my 33's with no rubbing. So total, I'll have a 4''
lift. I'm wondering, if I add 2'' coil spacers (3'' suspension + 1''
body + 2'' coil spacers = 6'' lift), would I be able to clear 35's
without rubbing ?
That's one question, and two, if (and only if) that combination
would not be a problem and would be normal and would work,
what other mod's would I have to make to accomodate the
added height ? Extended driveshaft ? Any additional
transfercase lowering ? Extend the bumpstops ? Longer
shocks ? Anything that I'm missing ?
Thanks in advance for the responses I hope to get. Obviously
I'm not making these plans yet, I'd like some advice and
comments from those seasoned more than I am in this field.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm looking for a Jeep for a friend of mine at work,
she's not big into offroading, just wants a jeep to have to go
camping and that's really it. So here's what she's looking for:

Wrangler
'95 and up
no lift necessary
4 cylinder
manual
soft top
doesn't need power steering
doesn't need A/C
doesn't have to have 4x4
low mileage

So obviously she's looking for something inexpensive. If anyone
can help out or knows anyone who has a Jeep that somewhat
fits that criteria, let me know (makdad@h...). Thanks!

Subject: Re: tire rotation

I'm getting new tires and have been looking into this
for a few weeks - been everywhere from Fletcher's to
Discount to Firestone and even Costco. I really want
the BFGs. They all have told me the same thing about
BFGs - they're soft, expensive and I'll be very
unhappy with the tire life. They've all tried to talk
me out of buying BFGs and into Bridgestone Dueler ATs,
which at Fletcher's are about $30 cheaper per tire
than BFGs. The first few times I heard this, my
thought was that they're getting kickbacks for selling
Bridgestones. Who knows, maybe they are. I still
haven't made up my mind. It's perplexing - tire
dealers say stay away from BFGs, but a lot of people
run them and there's got to be a reason for that.

I currently run 31" Dunlop Rover RVs (already on there
when I bought my XJ) and they are cupping. I've
recently had an alignment and do rotate the tires
every 3k miles. I've been told once any tire starts
wearing in a particular fashion there's very little
you can do to fully correct it. That is partly
because most 4x4ers rotate front to back, which seems
to be the rule regardless of who you talk to.
Fletcher's told me today the only way to partially
correct the cupping is to rotate side-to-side every so
often. They said the heat is compounding the wear
pattern and causing the tires to break down even
faster. I do have a fair amount of tread left on my
tires, but they are approx. 5 years old and there's no
way to tell exactly how many miles are on them. I
drive a lot of miles for work, nearly 3000 miles in
the past 5 or 6 weeks, and that's going to compound my
wear problem. Fletchers' went on to say that because
the BFGs are softer they would break down even
quicker.

Well anyway, to answer your question more directly,
I've been told you can get away with rotating them
every 6k, but if there's wear problems, they should be
rotated every 3k. As I said, I do rotate mine every
3k. When I get new tires, they will be rotated and
the balanced checked every 3k.

I'm no tire expert and feel like a bobble-head doll
when I'm talking to those guys! If I accept what
they're telling me at face value, it makes perfectly
good sense to me, so I just nod my head in agreement.

Please let me know if you find out what I'm peddling
here is a bunch of hoo-ha. I'd be interested to know
whether I'm getting good or bad advice.

Bill

If you rub with 35's as you are now, you'll rub if you add 2" spriing
spacers also, unless you extend your bumpstops. So, yes, you'll need
extended bumpstops, actually for several reasons. First, to keep the 35's
out of the underside of the fenders, and second, to keep from
overcompressing your springs. With 2" spring spacers on top of 3" springs,
it'll be really easy to overcompress you springs. That'll ruin 'em in a
heart beat. Basically, assuming that your bumpstops are adjusted correctly
now, such that the springs don't overcompress, you'll have to extend your
bumpstops so that they are in the same relative position as they are now.
You'll also need:
- Longer shocks
- Without much doubt a SYE and CV driveshaft
- Possibly extended brake lines in the front.
- You'll have to do something with you front (and rear) sway bar links. If
you have disco's in the front, you'll need longer ones. You'll want to
extend the rear sway links.
What rear axle do you have. 35's will be really pushing a D35C.
What wheels are you going to use, what backspacing ?

Best,
Fred

Bill,

I've go 30*9.5*15 BFG AT KOs on my YJ. They've got 12,000 miles on them and
still look new. They've been over a wide variety of terrain and handle
everything well, except mud. They are close to useless in mud. OTOH,
excellent in rain. They are also fairly well built in that I've yet to put
either of the spares on the ground.

Because of the mud (perhaps less of a problem in AZ?) I'm going to replace
them with either BFG MT KMs or Interco TRXUS.

The Interco TRXUS has been highly recommended by lots of folks I've talked
to and are comparatively inexpensive (about 105 bux). The advantage of the
TRXUS over the BFG MT KM is that the TRXUS is siped. But you won't go wrong
with either.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone know what axles a Ramcharger had in them, I am not sure of the
year. The front is a D44 the rear I am not sure. It has 12 bolts on the diff
cover & I can't find any "D" markings on it.

TIA

You may have to do some bump stop adjustments to clear during articulation,
but you ABSOLUTELY can fit 35" tires with that setup.

From what I can find on the site, the show is going to feature Currie's Fire
Ant, which is a TJ. The last build-up on the show (finally finished a
couple of weeks ago) was the Wicked Willys and now he's started on "Project
Crazy Horse", a Bronco. Cool stuff! The Wicked Willys was definitely nice,
I wouldn't mind it parked in my spot. :)
