Jay,
Welcome to the club. Here are some basics (IMO):
1. Tow Strap
2. Tow Hooks (front and rear on your vehicle)
3. Tools
4. Fire Extinguisher
5. First Aid Kit (a good one)
6. Extra Water and food for the trip.
7. CB Radio (not a true requirement, but it really makes the trip more
enjoyable for you)
8. Shovel
9. Hi Lift Jack
10. Spare Tire
11. Flash light (for night trips)
12. Make sure that you and your vehicle are up for the rated trail.
13. And if you are going with me, bring any extra parts that you may have
laying around for a 1974 CJ-5 :-)

I'm sure that you will get lots of replies to your post, and get lots of
"good advice".

Good luck,
Bob

I agree with everything Bob said but put more requirement on the CB.
Great for reporting trail problems, oncomming traffic, breakage, pit
stops, and info. Do not forget to secure as much as possible, when it
gets rough the thigs you carry can get moving around inside your
jeep. Rope, tie straps, and bungee cords are a neccesity! Carry extra
water for jeep and people, and something to make shade with, tarp,
sheet, ect... read everything you can on the outdoors, trails and
jeep repair, you do not know what may come in handy. Happy trailing
and tread lightly. Roy 98XJ

Since everyone else is doing it...
As you may recall, I posted asking about some lights for the ZJ...well, a younger lady decided to do a panic stop on the onramp to the 60 in Mesa, I didn't stop quite as quickly, and modified the back of her Brand New Olds. Alero. We broke the headlights, and marker lights along with most of the mounting, pushed the 'P' in JEEP in just a bit on the hood, and put a few scuffs on the front bumper. The Alero suffered a 12" shorter trunk, broken lights, lowered back bumper, and some really cool dents on the corners above the tail lights. total damage to the Jeep will be under 500bucks, Alero...looks like about 10,000!! REALLY GLAD WE DRIVE A JEEP!!!

For those of you following this thread here is the proper wiring for
TJ wiring to PRE-76 CJ lights:

The red wire from the CJ light goes to the Black wire with the yellow
stripe on the TJ harness and the black wire from the CJ light goes to
the Gray wire (drivers side) and Tan wire (passenger side) on the TJ
harness. They will not work properly until mounted to the grill
completing the ground so you can't test em while they are hanging out
of the vehicle.

They work fine now, both parking lights and turn signals at a proper
flash rate. MANY thanks to Chris Krieg and the rest of you for your
input.

Subject: Driveline advice

Hello to all,

I am back online again, after a move to Tucson from Mesa.

I have a few questions regarding the CV shafts and possible SYE kits. I have seen all the emails that have been sent discussing pros and cons of trail use, strength, etc. I have a lift on my 3" SkyJacker lift on my XJ and I have recently (now that I have to drive freeway to work) that I get a driveline vibe when I drive to work (above 55 MPH). It is only during accel that it does it.

I have read some of the posts (when I don't have 920 of them) and I have came across a few about pinion angle. Well, I looked under my jeep and the input of the rearend and the driveshaft are a straight line. There is a shim that is bolted into the spring pack making it sit at that angle. So, according to what I have read it must be set to accept a CV shaft and SYE?

The Big Questions:

1. Is it worth trying to remove the shim and set the pinion angles? Or should I move to a CV shaft and SYE?

2. This is no longer a trail beater, I have to drive it at high speeds daily. So, what would be the most "cost effective" fix?

3. Does anyone make a cv shaft that can be adapter to the Xfer case without having to purhase the SYE?

Thanks in advance.

PS - Any good 4X4 shops in Tucson?

Have a good weekend!

If it is under accel I would think it would be more of a pinion angle
problem. If it is constant then I would say you might need a CV
shaft. JMO
