No big hurry, I am off to San Diego for the summer and the Jeep is
going on mothballs. See ya all when I get back. (Maybe the trails
will be open by then and we can get some wheelin in). Take care

Robert,

Within the last few weeks my CJ started doing the same thing. I figure it's time to replace the 18-year-old sending unit. I ordered one that just arrived today. I hope I don't waste my effort removing the tank to install it and find out it's the gauge.

This must be a Jeep thing. Before I went to a Aero 40 gallon tank on my Full Size it would raed no higher than 3/4 tank and never lower than 1/4 tank. I have heard from others with this same problem.

hmmmm... Joe this is something that has been talked about in most of
the ASE classes I have been involved in....Just imagine all of the
people that if they see their guage moove just one little bit....Oh
no my vehicle is overheating!!!! But in reality it is not....as per
factory service/troubleshooting manual, the actual temp taken by the
temp sender in the rear of the cylinder head is non-conclusive for an
over heating concern. The only way to acuratly diagnose a overheating
issue is by using BOTH a non-contact infered thermometer in
conjunction with a DRB 2 or 3.....Now when my XJ shows 210 on the
guage, I connect the DRB3 we have at the shop and scan the radiator
inlet AND outlet temp with my raytek gun and it shows between 192 and
204 sitting idle in the shop with the air on.as the guage goes up due
to the fact that I unplugged my elec fan when the CHECK GUAGES light
goes on ( not the Check engine) it is at 225-232 by using the same
checking method.....NOW we go to the FSM and it tells us this is
NORMAL TEMP in a SEVERE CLIMATE........SEVERE CLIMATE
people......read your owners manual for severe and normal and see
which one fits.... joe I would be glad to do this with you to
actually see what your temps are.....sounds like you might have a
prob..... BTW....where did you put the sender for the VDO guage at????

Thanks Joe,

Yes indeed, I know I have a problem and it is caused by the airflow blockage
caused by my winch, solenoids, lights and brush guard. I'm relatively sure
I can cure it without having to relocate anything or making any changes to
my setup... other than a good radiator and hi flow water pump. I'll
probably take you up on your offer as soon as I finish making the changes to
my cooling system.

I connected the VDO sensor to the thermostat housing on the radiator side...
in the exact same location as the factory temperature sensor.

Subject: Re: Cooling a 350 (revisited)

My sending unit is in the intake manifold just to the passenger's side of
the thrmostat on top up in front. Water flows through the block on both
sides, comes up through the heads to the front, and is brought together just
before the thermostat. It is essentially the last point before leaving the
motor and entering the radiator.

I've found cruising down the freeway is the BEST cooling I have so far.
That fixed blade fan spinning at around 2,800 rpm is sucking some SERIOUS
air. You can really hear it. I get about a 10-15F rise when I come to a
stop and begin to idle or sit in traffic. Today I was about 180F after
cruising around both on and off of the freeway.

I'm not sure what the temp would be if I was in 1st gear, wound up pretty
good, and not going very fast. Haven't tried that one yet. But I think it
is going to still run pretty cool due to the fact that the fan is REALLY
sucking some air when the rev's come up. I'll see when I get a chance to go
wheeling when it finally rains! ;-) LOL

Hope that helps.

Can you talk him in to installing a proper set for free? Or do you not
trust it at this point? That way he keeps his money and you get what you
intended in the first place and don't have to shell out more $$ to get it
done again.

Just a thought........

After reading Joe's and Joe's posts (did that make sense?), I dropped a
line to a friend in Detroit. He is one of the three engineers that was
responsible for the Rubicon TJ. You wouldn't believe how that thing
came to be....but that is another story for another day.

I asked him about the gauges and how their signal is derived....time
averaged, are the gauges linear.....etc. His response is as follows:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hey Stu ...

"OFF THE RECORD" OF COURSE !

Uh Oh... busted ! One of my "pet peaves... "Truth in gauging" . The
computer does, and is conditioning the information. Fluctuating gauges
make a lot of customers very nervous. Many just don't understand.

Of course, if you really understand an engine, you know this is
"normal". However, too many complaints in the field. This has driven a
"dampened" gauge strategy.

I personally hate this... I want to know what's going on ! What's the
point of a gauge if it's not relaying accurate information ? Bet I'm
preaching to the choir on this one, right ?? LOL

Temp gauge holds 210 for a long time... then moves. It's been changed
several times since the launch of TJ.

The Volt gauge is really dampened.... averaged big time.

And the F ''n fuel gauge ! Don't even get me started on THAT one !!!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The remainder of the e-mail had to be cut out.....not ready for public
distribution. Hang in there....better things are hopefully coming if he
gets his way with the TJ. ;)

Hi Stu,

It's nice to have someone admit what we already knew... and while I
completely understand their reasoning for filtering the information which
goes to our gauges; there are a few of us who push their rigs to the point
where filtered information isn't good enough. Customers don't like fuel
gauges which move when you turn a corner, so the factory programs the
computer to ignore fluctuations in fuel level signals which are of short
duration... unfortunately, there are a few discriminating TJ owners out here
who NEED to know what the unfiltered data is... and short of reprogramming
the factory computer to take out the filtering windows... we are screwed
unless we replace the gauges.

I originally replaced my gauges because I wanted a different look in my flat
fender TJ... once I replaced them and discovered how "dynamic" things really
are when you aren't viewing the world through the filter of a computer; I'd
never even consider going back to the factory setup... no way... no how.

Back when I replaced my gauges... I didn't know that the instruments were
computer controlled... I didn't know that the data to the instruments was
filtered... but after replacing the gauges it became clear that DC engineers
HEAVILY filter the data that we see on our computer controlled instruments
<sigh>. Once again, an automotive manufacturer decides to save us from
ourselves.

Thanks again for the confirmation of our suspicions...

Are you having the problems with your rig?

If so... check to make sure that the front track bar is TIGHT at the frame
end mount as well as the axle end.
Check your toe-in. Make sure your pitman arm is tight. Check ball
joints...
Any questions? Just bring your rig over this weekend and we'll fix her up.

Gosh... you're right Scott... we wouldn't want to have "unattractive" tail
lights on our Jeeps.
<grin>
although I'd choose another descriptive word for the NAPA lights... "Manly".

Hey... would you find the NAPA lights more "attractive" if I painted them
purple???

ROTFL
