Never say never ;)
I've seen a writeups from a couple of people, who have done it easily. Use Optima batteries, as they can be mounted in any position. They both used two Optimas (full sized ones), and mounted them on their sides in the same location as the stock battery. They fit without much of a problem.
Cheers,
Fred

Does having A/C really make that big of a difference on your electrical power supply? I can see that having a winch and 15 KC lights make that kind of a difference, but A/C. It runs off of your fan belt any ways. Just wondering why and if this makes a difference.

Hey David,
I'm not sure if you are just informing people or if you are buying this dual battery system. None the less I have seen set up that are cheaper and you choose the batteries that you are going to run, so you can run two Optima batteries. If you want more information let me know and I'll see if I can dig up the information.

Hi James,
Adding a separate gas gauge and sending unit to your existing tank is
incredibly easy. I had to do this on my new gauge install, and the results
are incredibly accurate. A new gas gauge with sending unit is around $50
from VDO AND the sending unit is adjustable to fit the TJ tank perfectly.
If you really want a non-changing accurate gauge... replace that POS
computer controlled ever changing factory unit with a nice VDO unit...
you'll love having perfect accuracy on fuel level... and I'll help you with
the install if you'd like.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

You still have to buy the dual battery solenoid set up which I believe is
around $185-$200.

One thing that you need to know about Odyssey batteries. They are much smaller (almost half the size, I think) than traditional auto batteries with the same output so you can get 2 of them in there. These are what are going in my plane so that I can have a backup battery without giving up space.

recreation and access in an election year. I believe, if you recreate
using a vehicle (even mountainbike) anywhere in America,
you have a stake in what's going to happen in California in the next
5 months.
We've identified 3 ACTION ITEMS to help you help our friends in CA.
Frankly, I think we've made the whole thing far to
easy!! I'm certain that you folks will get spoiled after this one and
insist all our ACTION ITEMS be this easy. Well, don't count
on it!! ; -)
Apologies for saying this bluntly; The time has come for
recreationists to draw a LINE IN THE SAND. Membership,
involvement and vigorous political action are the orders of the day.
Do the ACTION ITEMS today and rest well knowing you
are part of the solution. Thank you.

P.S. This weeks Monday Dispatch will be in your inbox in a second.
Apologies for the delay.
USA-ALL ACTION ALERT
SITUATION:
Threats to numerous to mention could close millions of acres of
public lands in CA. Details are on our website:
http://www.usa-all.com How can a family from Utah or Colorado or
Tennessee lend a hand? Three ACTION ITEMS are
below. #1 is mandatory, #2 is highly recommended and #3 is for folks
living in or near California.
ACTION ITEM ONE:
OHV users need to show support for the positive, and opposition to
the negative components of a very important travel plan:
Glamis. If you go there, we need you to write a comment letter on
behalf of your family. If you haven't ever heard of this weird
Glamis place, and never ever plan to go there, we still need you to
write a comment letter. Do it now, it will only take a minute.
Go to: http://www.usa-all.com then click on "Action Alerts/Letter
Writer" )
ACTION ITEM TWO:
Donate $20.00. This is no joke. Even a donation as small as twenty
dollars that goes to a Political Action Committee or to a
Legal Action Fund could easily be the most effective thing you do all
year. That is.... except for what you do on election day,
that's when we need you at the polls. There are lots of good
organizations to choose from. Use their websites. Do it today.
ACTION ITEM THREE:
On Thursday July 11 2002, there will be Public Land for Public Use
Protest Rally held at Senator Boxer's offices in
Sacramento, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and San Diego. Let me say
this directly: If you live in California and you are able to
attend any one of these events, but you choose not to attend, then do
not call this number the next time the feds want to close a
road, or you need some cash for the latest lawsuit. Californians have
never had a greater opportunity to show public support
for continued vehicle access on public lands in an election year.
They need to stand up and be counted.

Most likely they are wired wrong. Do you have both parking and turn signals
working. Joe West's were like this until I pointed out to him that his were
wired wrong. He had assumed that red was power and black is ground. Not true
on the CJ lights. One wire is parking and the other is turn signal. They
ground through the housing. As soon as we wired them properly, he again had
parking lights and the turn signals blinked at the proper rate.
Hope that helps.

I have to ask this question too. Wasn't there an issue concerning the
Kilby skid plate and the bottom of the tank deforming? Or was that
some one else's skid plate? I remember someone putting pieces of wood
between the tank and the skid plate to compensate for the round drop
down in the bottom-center of the tank. This maybe incorrect.
I believe when I saw the post concerning this I went out and loosened
the straps holding the gas tank in.

IMO K&N filters are a waste unless you *pre-filter* the intake. The
pores on the K&N are large and your oil will get dirty faster. If you
*pre-filter* the K&N you are back to having the same intake properties
as a stock filter. Think of how dusty the trails are we run. I blow the
dust/dirt off my Fram filter after every run. And that works for me.
Putting the intake over the hot engine is not a good idea either. You
want fresh air as cool as possible (for the desert anyway).
Just a couple of my cents worth.
OH and you can't recycle the oil from the K&N cleaning kit either. :)

Subject: Help/advice needed with gear install problem
13 months ago I had my XJ regeared to 4.56. This was done by Al Baker, a
retired 4wd shop owner who now operates his business out of his garage in
Glendale. He came highly recommended by a local fab shop I have used many
times.
Immediately after the gear swap, I started having problems, mostly in the
front end/transfer case. The first thing I noticed was that I had to back
the Jeep up to get it out of 4wd. It was like the front end was just binding
up. Then I started getting some popping coming from the front end while in
4wd. It was only about a month ago that I found one of the carrier bearings
had been spinning on the carrier. In the 12 months prior to that, I have had
a cracked transfer case (of unknown origin), replaced 4 front driveshaft
u-joints, and probably a couple other things I haven't thought of. My
latest breakage was a broken tooth on the front pinion.
Last night we pulled the old gears out of the front end and guess what we
found.........I had 3.73 gears in the front axle. A quick check verified
that the rear is geared to 4.56. Yup, thats right. The wrong gears were
installed up front. I guess that explains why I couldn't drive in 4wd on the
slickrock of Moab.
I just contacted Al Baker. It didnt go very well, to say the least. He wont
acknowledge the fact that he installed the wrong gears in the first place.
He says he always checks the ratio. I said apparently not. He then stated
that his install was warrantied for 90 days, and that because its been over
a year, he won't touch it. I told him that I should be reimbursed for at
least the cost of his front end install (approximately $575) and he replied
that it wasnt his problem.
First off, I urge all of you to avoid using Al Baker for any Jeep or 4wd
repair. He's obviously an incompetent installer and a crappy businessman to
boot.
Second, I would like to get your thoughts and ideas on how I should proceed.
I mentioned that EVERYBODY I know, including the AZVJC and it's many members
would be made aware of how he handled this situation. I then told him that I
would be contacting a lawyer about reimbursement.
What do you think??? Do I stand a chance??
Thanks

If you don't subscribe to the isolator setup for dual batteries then it is very simple and inexpensive to utilize a Ford starter solenoid to charge/connect the two batteries together and control when you want to do it. It has been done for years (centuries?) with motor homes and works great. but if someone wants to spend $185-$200 to do it I'll be glad to take their money and set them up. If you look at that set up closely you will see that that is all it is with a ridicules price tag.

Exactly, and I HAVE put it to the test. I was doing about 65 down the
road when all of a sudden the car in font of me SLAMMED on the brakes
to make a turn at the last second. Anyhow, I had to swerve cuz there
was no way I was stopping. Even with the SOA 37"s and no track bars
or swaybars, I didnt even come close to rolling, there was quite a
bit of body roll but It was fine. I know this doesnt mean that it

Rick,
Sorry to hear of your situation with Al. Ive used Al before and found just the opposite to be true. He went out of his way to pull a few strings for some R&P pricing for me, grabbed me a new carrier for about half of what I had found them for, charged me $200 in labor for the axle rebuild, and painted it while had it. He came highly recommended to me by a close friend who has used Al for the past 19+ years (and still does). In hind sight, it was certainly was unfortunate that you did not contact him when you started having problems right after the work was done. L

13 months ago I had my XJ regeared to 4.56. This was done by Al Baker, a retired 4wd shop owner who now operates his business out of his garage in Glendale. He came highly recommended by a local fab shop I have used many times.
Immediately after the gear swap, I started having problems, mostly in the front end/transfer case. The first thing I noticed was that I had to back the Jeep up to get it out of 4wd. It was like the front end was just binding up. Then I started getting some popping coming from the front end while in 4wd. It was only about a month ago that I found one of the carrier bearings had been spinning on the carrier. In the 12 months prior to that, I have had a cracked transfer case (of unknown origin), replaced 4 front driveshaft u-joints, and probably a couple other things I haven't thought of. My latest breakage was a broken tooth on the front pinion.
Last night we pulled the old gears out of the front end and guess what we found.........I had 3.73 gears in the front axle. A quick check verified that the rear is geared to 4.56. Yup, thats right. The wrong gears were installed up front. I guess that explains why I couldn't drive in 4wd on the slickrock of Moab.
I just contacted Al Baker. It didnt go very well, to say the least. He wont acknowledge the fact that he installed the wrong gears in the first place. He says he always checks the ratio. I said apparently not. He then stated that his install was warrantied for 90 days, and that because its been over a year, he won't touch it. I told him that I should be reimbursed for at least the cost of his front end install (approximately $575) and he replied that it wasnt his problem.
First off, I urge all of you to avoid using Al Baker for any Jeep or 4wd repair. He's obviously an incompetent installer and a crappy businessman to boot.
Second, I would like to get your thoughts and ideas on how I should proceed. I mentioned that EVERYBODY I know, including the AZVJC and it's many members would be made aware of how he handled this situation. I then told him that I would be contacting a lawyer about reimbursement.

When I first got it it held about 14!

Rick....I do tend to agree with the fact that you might just be
SOL.... No I also believe that for someone "who has 18 years" of
experiance of setting up gears, they should know the difference
between 41/11 gears and 41/9 gears....however its quite evident this
is not true...I believe that ANYONE in such standing as Al Baker
would at VERY LEAST be reasonable and just give you the cost of gears
and install back....now I know this does not include the price if the
carrier, or install kit, but I said reasonable, and I would do that
for you if I had made such a STUPID, INCOMPETENT mistake....but for
him to tall you "its not my problem" well that is just complete
BULL****. I have been setting gears for almost 10 years in all
applications from drag racing to road racing all the way to off-
roading..... I can honestly say that I have NEVER made that
mistake....(not saying that I MIGHT) BUT if I had I would make good
on it and eat some pride...but than again, by not having a conceeded
attitude that I would never make that mistake, (like Al's) then we
would not know.....
Ok, I will get off the soap box right now...It just irritates me when
people cant stand up and take responsibility for their own
actions.....

I've seen a writeups from a couple of people, who have done it easily. Use Optima batteries, as they can be mounted in any position. They both used two Optimas (full sized ones), and mounted them on their sides in the same location as the stock battery. They fit without much of a problem.

Does having A/C really make that big of a difference on your electrical power supply? I can see that having a winch and 15 KC lights make that kind of a difference, but A/C. It runs off of your fan belt any ways. Just wondering why and if this makes a difference.

None the less I have seen set up that are cheaper and you choose the batteries that you are going to run, so you can run two Optima batteries. Hi James,
Adding a separate gas gauge and sending unit to your existing tank is
incredibly easy.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

If you order, get the VDO gauge which goes with the VDO sending unit... you

One thing that you need to know about Odyssey batteries. They are much smaller (almost half the size, I think) than traditional auto batteries with the same output so you can get 2 of them in there. These are what are going in my plane so that I can have a backup battery without giving up space.

None the less I have seen set up that are cheaper and you choose the batteries that you are going to run, so you can run two Optima batteries. USA-ALL ACTION ALERT
IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED
Greetings All,
Most of you, at least at some level, are aware of the situation in
California where recreationists are fighting several lawsuits,
important land planning and Boxer's very bad wilderness bill. It may
seem logical to view the situation in California
pessimistically. Actually, the situation represents a rare
opportunity to show strong public support for continued vehicle based
recreation and access in an election year.
Thank you.
Brian Hawthorne
Utah Shared Access Alliance

Thanks

Can't you just mount it in the rear cargo area behind the seat on a

Scott:
If you don't subscribe to the isolator setup for dual batteries then it is very simple and inexpensive to utilize a Ford starter solenoid to charge/connect the two batteries together and control when you want to do it. It has been done for years (centuries?) with motor homes and works great. but if someone wants to spend $185-$200 to do it I'll be glad to take their money and set them up. If you look at that set up closely you will see that that is all it is with a ridicules price tag.

Rick,
Sorry to hear of your situation with Al. L

the wagoneers had all=time four wheel drive. Does anybody know how
this will affect my vehicle? i have manual locking hubs now. And just
wondering what kind of things i should look out for concenring my

Subject: Re: Help/advice needed with gear install problem
