Subject: [az_vjc] gas gauge
So there I was cruising down the 101 thinking I am either getting good gas
mileage or my gas gauge is broke and all the sudden the Jeep started
sputtering. Oh ****... I pulled off the 101, ran a red light to take the
right hand turn and there were no gas station on that exit. I coasted (ha,
ha) down a couple of blocks and came to a stop on a side road. Luckily there
was a older gentleman out front of his house. I noticed he had a nice lawn
and asked, if he happened to have any gas for his lawn mower I could buy
from him. He had a gallon and a half, I gave him $3, poured it in and was on
may way to the gas station.
After filling up at the station the gas gauge went up. So I am thinking the
gauge/float was stuck or it decided to become less accurate on the opposite
side than is was inaccurate before. Only time will tell.
I can't remember the last time I ran out of gas, it was at least 7 years
ago. But, now I remember why I have been filling up with a 1/4 tank left.
Don't trust those dang gauges.

The only problem is that now you are sucking hot engine bay air into
the intake. The filter will also become clogged faster, and also
suseptible to water, a wet filter is very clogged. Portt outside air
into the engine and use a shell to keep the filter clean. THAT will
give you more horsepower and better milage.

Sounds like you are looking for the stock rubber bushings that sit on
top of the coils, not coil spacers right? Any 4x4 shop should have
them. Get Daystar's, they are a poly and should last longer. Call 4

Get a "heavy duty" electronic flasher unit. I hear GM has one of

Or the 3rd is to use TJ bulbs in the CJ fixtures.

The gas tank in the YJ (and I believe the TJ as well) is made of plastic and

One solution is a new tank. I used www.aerotanks.com and have their 28

Eric:
Yes, the flasher unit usually, but not always, plugs into the fuse block. Older standard type flashers used a bi-metal strip that heated up when current passed through it and opened the circuit. When it cooled down it closed the circuit again. This happened fairly rapidly and caused the signals to flash (that "boing-boing'boing" sound. The amount of current going through the bi-metal strip determinded how fast it would operate. If you had too much load (lots of bulbs) on the circuit it flashed rapidly and if you have a bulb out it would flash slower. The electronic flasher units plug into the same socket replacing the original flasher and the flash rate is set by the factory by design to flash between 60 and 120 flashes per minute regardless of load. Electronic is a good choice if you tow a trailer also because it is not load sensitive. You'll get the same flash rate whether your tailer is on the circuit or not.
Hope that helped.

Does having A/C really make that big of a difference on your electrical power supply? I can see that having a winch and 15 KC lights make that kind of a difference, but A/C. It runs off of your fan belt any ways. Just wondering why and if this makes a difference.

Randy,
You're talking about a traction bar - not the panhard bar. The panhard
bars (also called "track bars" but not "traction bars") position the axles
laterally under the vehicle. YJ's and TJ's have them. CJ's don't. I believe
they were added to YJ's to address safety (ie. roll-over) concerns of the
CJ's.
Michael,
TJ's absolutely have to have them as there is nothing else to keep the
axles positioned laterally. Coil springs can't do it. YJ's probably need
them in extreme, high-speed maneuvers (like avoiding an accident) but
a lot of people (who have never been in that situation) claim they aren't
needed. Under normal driving conditions, leaf springs will keep the
axles centered pretty well. After all, that's how CJ's came from the
factory. I have removed the track bars from my YJ and can't say I
notice a difference. But I have not had to put it to the test. If your
Jeep is a trail only rig, then you'll probably be ok removing the panhard
bars. Otherwise, it's a risk you have to decide to take.

The gas tank in the YJ (and I believe the TJ as well) is made of plastic and
warps. There were several service bulletins about this. Depending on your
vehicles miles and the cooperation of the dealer, you might get this
replaced free...thought it is sure to happen again.
One solution is a new tank. I used www.aerotanks.com and have their 28
gallon version. Came with all the bits and pieces.

If one had a decent dent in their gas tank skid, that could explain the guage
being off, right? Given that a full tank of gas weighs quite a bit, it seems
that replacing the skid plate would allow the tank to conform back to its
original shape - at least when full. Agreed? But what about when the
tank approaches an empty state? Do the plastic tanks deform on a
permanent basis such that when there isn't the weight of a full tank of
gas the tank will deform even if an undented skid plate has been installed?
Just curious. It's not like I have any dents in my skid plate. ;-)

Mine is not going all the way up to full, and when I fill up by
locking the nozzle I usually top of to the next dollar up, but it
will create a huge gas puddle under the Jeep (it doesnt come out of
the top of the filler neck). I stopped topping off and just shut off
the nozzle when it clicks, but I'll still get a gas leak. Start up
the Jeep and it says 3/4 full.... aint that a b*tch? Its a 98 4.0

Randy,
You're talking about a traction bar - not the panhard bar. The panhard
bars (also called "track bars" but not "traction bars") position the axles
laterally under the vehicle.

It's not like I have any dents in my skid plate. ;-)

the nozzle when it clicks, but I'll still get a gas leak. Start up
