Only in 5th gear, when I let off the gas, there is an odd grinding-clicking noise, I can feel the vibrations of it throughout my 90' YJ. Please help us.

Welcome aboard,

your problem may be a number of things. From a missing gear collar (snap ring that holds 5th gear in place) to a worn out bearing. Some things to check before digging into the transmission. Check u joints at both driveshafts, make sure they are tight and there is grease in them. Also check motor and transmission mounts. Lastly try changing the fluid in the transmission. inspect the old fluid for debris and a burnt color. If the fluid is really really nasty might want to change it agian in a few hundred miles. If the noise persists, then it's probablly time to open up the transmission and take a close look at things.

I had this same problem with my 98tj... it should be the same trans (AX15) unless you have a 4cyl then it is an AX5 i believe. On the AX15's 5th gear tends to let go due to insufficient lubrication or of just high mileage. I actually lost 5th gear on the highway, when i let off the gas it was a loud banging/grinding, put it in 4th and it goes away. I pulled the trans out and found teeth missing from the 5th gear and idler... it looked like the bearing failed and the extra play caused the "grenading" of it. 5th is also located on the very back of the transmission, separate from the other gears in the main cluster, i cant remember, but i think you will be able to inspect it in the vehicle if you take the t-case off and split the rear part of the case off. I took the whole thing out because it is just easier to do on the bench. total cost of repairs of mine would have been around $500 for parts... (including a master rebuild kit)... I ended up getting a rebuilt unit for $900 with a warranty, the choice is yours, but start by checking the fluid for metal. Good luck!! if you have any questions concerning the rebuild or whatever, PM me.

TJ98,
Thank You too!
You guys just might save me from a nasty divorce with my sanity after all.
Been tossing and turning all evening, I feel more relaxed with a bit more drive to do my YJ some justice.
Thanks again.

Well guys, a rebuilt AX15, clutch kit, fly wheel.
Wow, what a job! Now just to get that doggone clutch cylinder to bleed out so I can actually put her in gear.
Wierd though, goes into gear when engine is off, but not while engine is running.
