View Full Version : Older CJ's and Emissions

I have a friend in the market for a Jeep. He likes the CJ's and has found a few in his price range. The problem he is running into is that they all seem to be registered up north and have not had to pass emissions.
How difficult is it to get these to pass emissions. What sort of repairs are usually required to pass. Is the V8 worse than the inline 6?
Any help is appreciated.

I would stay away form the CJ's up here. Since we dont have emmisions, things get monkeyed up quick...let alone over 30 years. For example, when I got my CJ from a guy in Phx, I immediately took of the Smog pump and that crapsince it will never have to go through emmissions again(hopefully). Really try to find a good CJ in a county that requires emmissions testing. Otherwise you may or may not have problems.
Edit: If you know what you are doing, or have someone around who does it is not that hard(usually) to get something up to code. ALSO, a really old CJ will be emissions exempt in Maricopa county. I think it has to be like 35 years old but I am not sure. Look it up. I know I had a friend with a '66 VW that was exempt.

Vehicles that were manufactured before 1967 are exempt from emissions:

Most CJ5s or CJ6s or older would be exempt.

fortunately, most of the emissions inspectors aren't all that knowledgeable about motors, thus, very easy to fool.....as long as it has what looks like cats and a smog pump and passes the motor running test, the rest is a breeze.....

He is looking at an 80 with the inline 6 and I believe a 76 with the V8. I think both have the smog pump removed and one has an upgraded carb and runs rich. So no exemption. Guessing that you may need to reinstall the smog pump, have the carb adjusted or rejetted, and possibley replace the cat.
Hopefully thats the worse case. Anyone have any 1st hand experience?
Thanks for the replys.

Walt (WalterD) and I have a 1979 CJ7 and it failed
emissions... here is a link to the thread that we started
on it...

We now have it insured as a "classic" and it does not have
to pass emissions while it is listed as a "classic".

I think your best bet would be to find one that already passes emissions. The emissions control systems on the CJs are confusing and fussy. Typically past owners have messed with it so you don't know whats there and what isn't. Also, many of the parts are expensive and/or hard to find. After i did my engine swap i tried to put the emissions stuff back on, i went to emissions and they basically laughed at me. I don't dd it anymore so its no big deal, but trust me, messing with a CJs emission system will be a headache.

I had a 84 CJ about 13 years ago. Every year is was a pain to get it to pass. Very unsophisticated emissions lots of vacuum lines and carbs that would constantly need adjustments. I had to pay to get it to pass every year. I now have a 91 yj with 149K passes every year without any issues

I would stay away from a CJ or any jeep that has no recent history of passing emmisions.
You could spend all the money for missing emmisions parts usually removed or replaced with non emmisions, like smog pump, charcoal canister, exahust manifold, plumbing coming out of exhaust manifold, PVC and PVC plumbed valve cover, and so on and still fail due to a vaccume leak requireing removal and reseal of intake manifold, carb needing rebuild, or barely needing a ring job.

I would be interested to know more about what the process and any limitations to insure and register as a classic.
Last I looked into this it was only with one insurance company and they limited my miles and usage.
Thanks,
Tom

Hey Tom...
We go through Liberty Mutual, it has to be at least 25 years old and
with our insurance company they wanted a statement from someone
qualified that shows how much the jeep is worth. They did not limit
us on the mileage driven each year...
I will dig and see if I can find all the links that refer to the "collectors
insurance".

Ok... after some intense digging I found the link on the thread that
WalterD started about our 79 CJ7 failing emissions....

Hope this helps...

You could always swap in an injected motor. I have an 81 CJ-7 with an injected small block that passes with really low numbers compared to the standards...

Mine passed with flying colors according to the sheet. There are many things under the hood that are capped off and plugged so when I had it shipped from Texas I didn't think it would pass and got pretty worried. Fortunately, the Visual Inspector was a good ol boy and spent way more time looking at everything but underneath of the hood. I have two years tags now, which allows me plenty of time to save for and install the Howell FI kit:D

When I first got my 68' Chevrolet truck back in high school it had the 250 inline-6 in it and that thing would give me hell just to pass something. Finally I just put some alcohol in the tank and turn up the idle on the carb so it would run rich, finally it would pass with flying colors. Also the guys down there couldn't drive the 3 on the tree manual for crap, I would have to sit in the middle and shift for them.

If you are swapping in FI, should pass flying colors (no need for air pump or other crap.....yes, been there, done that: 77 CJ7 with 4.0)
if vehicle is going to be very low "hobby or parade / activities in the publid interest", I write insruance policies which exempt you from emissions. Note: I need to insure other cars in household
