View Full Version : Another stupid cooling question

Does anyone know, does the fan HAVE to be IN the shroud or can it be just to the outside of the opening? I got my seven blade (TJ) fan today but it has a MUCH larger diameter than the 5 blade YJ fan. My only options would be to trim the shroud so that the fan was about ½ an inch from the opening, buy an electric or live with the 5 blades. It stays at or under 210 while moving at 110F outside temp. If I let is sit for 10 to 15 min (without moving) with the air on high it starts to get uncomfortably high on the gauge.

It will be fine... it isnt the best thing but you should be fine..
I would trim enough off... and build spacers and then build a new shroud piece around the fan...
the shroud creates a tunnel for the air to move through which directs the air to the engine ( and guides it through the condensor and radiator )
with out the shroud it will just " throw the air" around rather then pull it through.

the shroud just created a was for the fan to more efficiently create a vacuum.
would the TJ shroud fit?

Shaggy, I was just thinking that. The radiator is the same for the YJ and TJ so it should bolt up. My question is: is the 4cyl TJ and the 6cyl TJ fan \ shroud the same diameter? If someone with a 4cyl and a 6cyl can measure the fan opening on the shroud I would appreciate it.

I did some checking and was "told" the 4cyl TJ uses the small fan as well:mad:. The 6cyl shroud is not deep enough to cover the blades by, oh, about 9 inches:mad:. How much to have something fabed up?
I am frustrated with this project. If I can't come up with something I'll have a NEW 7 blade fan for sale. I'll go with the Flex-a-lite electric and be done. I might go with the Taurus fan and the DCCONTROL box. It will be cheaper but I like the all in one of the F.A.L.

do it yourself.
start with Styrofoam blocks then cut the necessary shape with a hot wire.
sand smooth then use filer glass sheets(the woven ones) and resin.
let harden.
sand smooth.
paint.

^^^
that or get your self a 55gallon drum... cut it to the length needed...
Drill Holes. makes brackets and mount it to your radiator..
I did this on my 65 few years ago and worked great.,
