Having spent years in racing, I have prolly heard every possible way to clean and prep K&N filters without using their "expensive" cleaning products. Some of these methods I have seen first hand destroy the filters!!! For example, the guy that cleaned his before every race with gas.......Yea, the emergency crews finally got the fire out.....

Anyway, my question here is: What is the best way to clean K&N air filters without specifically buying the K&N cleaning kit, or, if you feel it is best to buy the kit, why???

We accually sell the cleaner kits from Airaid, equivalent to the K/N cleaner for pretty cheap. Thus I seen just good old fashion Dawn dish soap work REALLY well, then you just end up buying just the oil.:)

For what you pay for k&n. Why not spend the money and use correct stuff? It is a lot cheaper than buying new filter.

I bought a Airraid aftermarket air filter from Avondale Jeep when I first got my Jeep. I just went to checkers spent 10.00 bucks and bought the K&N cleaner, I can get about 6 times of cleaning it before the oil and can of cleaner is out. I have had that air filter a little over a year now, works great and pretty simple to use. Every 4k miles I clean the filter.

Like Cole said, Dawn dish soap and then hit it with the K&N or like Filter oil.

Spectre Performance makes a cheap equvilant that you can get at AutoZone, works just as well.

Bucket of warm soapy water, dip filter in it, turn it rapidly and updown motion...do it numerous times, rinse, works really good!!! But you WILL need filter oil.

I have a new bottle of the cleaner and a new bottle of the oil at home. I bought them for a CAI that I had on my old Jetta but traded in the car after I had only cleaned the filter once. They've been sitting in my garage for like 4 years and I'm not sure if that kind of thing goes bad, but you're welcome to have them if you want.

Just an FYI, there is a newer technology for cleanable air filters out there which does not require re-oiling.

You simply wash it and put it back in....

Its called DryFlow and its made by AEM...

Just in case you are looking for an alternative to K&N.
