Ok, I am sick of not really being sure which rear end is in my Cherokee. I have always had the diff serviced at the dealership so never had it apart myself to figure out for sure if it is a D35 or a Chrysler 8.25.
It is a 2001 XJ, 60th Anniversary Edition, I6 4.0L, 4WD, NO ABS.
I looked in the Quadratec catalog and it shows a drawing of the Chrysler 8.25 having a more rounded diff cover. Mine has more of an odd shaped cover like what their drawing of the D35 has. So, I am think "ok, it is a D35... ewww!" But then I look at the Chrysler rear end on the Commander and it's diff cover shape looks nearly identical.

I dont know about the newer jeeps but the 8.25" rear (like mine ;)) has a 10 bolt pattern and when measured across from eachother it comes to 9" exactly. The 35 is 10 bolts with 10 5/8" wide
Here's pics

I believe the d35's all came with a rubber fill plug vs. a screw in plug....not sure of the 8.25

Called Krisha over at Airpark and she looked it up... Dana 35... eww. :-(
Time to start saving my money for something better.
Now the question is what "new" rear ends are available for a 2001 XJ without having to pull something off a junk yard vehicle? And what is said rear end going to run me (ballpark figure?).
Or since I don't really want to hardcore wheel this vehicle (since it's my daily driver) should I just leave it be and save the money for a beater Jeep to wheel in?

The 8.25 has a lip, the d35 will have a smooth bottom. This is the best way to tell them apart. If you have a metal plug, it's a 44 but as far as I know they were mostly in the earlier xjs.

The 8.25 has a round smooth surface:

The Dana35 has a large ridge and flat spot on it:
