Thinking in advance here. I want to go SOA and with that comes an SYE and new drive shaft. My question is would it make sense to swap in a Dana300 instead of sticking with the 231? There are a few scout dana 300's on CraigsList and the conversion pieces from novak are about 300 bucks to mate it up to my ax5. Would this be an un-necessary choice and an over kill or should i spend the $$ on the SYE.

Iam guessing that you have a YJ? Posting motor, tire size, axle's , and the type of wheeling you are going to do would help us to advise you better.

YJ 2.5 4bannger 5speed manual. right now its on 33's with a shackle and body lift. (how i got it). What I want to do with it:
SOA
ford 8.8
lockers
new gears (prob 4.88)
35inch tires
use would be trail running and rock crawling.
Im trying to plan out what i want to start spending my $$ on so i dont have to go back and replace something. The problem im running into is that it all seems to build on eachother. Replace the rear axle then since im doing that i might as well do the SOA so i dont have to go back and do it again....then i need to SOA the front, SYE, shocks, brake lines..etc etc etc.

If there's nothing mechanically(sp?) wrong with the np231 I'd say run it. Do your axle swap and SOA first. Then do the regear (4:88's) and lockers. You can weld the rear to save money and get a selectable for the front. When all that's done you'll want to get a 4:1.

the 4:1 is the main reason i was looking at the dana 300. One the 4:1 kit is cheaper and it would eliminate need for the SYE kit. again thinking down the road. If im going to 4:1 why spend $$ building the 231 when the 300 is a stronger t-case and can be twin sticked.

Like mentioned if you will probably want to go 4:1, and if you need an SYE, I think I would get the Dana 300 so you could set it up for twin stick.

I forgot the 300tcase can be twin sticked. I should of known that, a friend of mine had one and the kit for the 4:1 is much cheaper like $800 or so. At least that's about what he paid for it.

the teralow kit for the 231 is about $1100 and the kit for the 300 is about $600 bucks.
a dana 300 is a dana 300 right? they aren't different between years/models? if i remember right you can flip them from drivers drop to passenger without problems. Will the dana 300 out of a Scout II match up with my YJ's ax5 with the kit from novak adapters?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it will. However, I do believe you need a kit to flip it. If I can find the link I am thinking of, I will add it to this post.
Edit:
Here is it

It looks like flipping it may take some work.

The 300 is a stronger case for sure. If it works out to be a lot cheaper you might as well run it. I don't see any problems running your 231 with a 4 banger. As you know the cost is going to be the downside of the 231. By the time you figure in a SYE and a 4to1 you could have almost had an atlas II. Not to mention the twin stick is really handy in certian situations. Go to advanced adapters and look at their conversion charts. I know you can make the 300 work I'm just not sure what it will take. If you start getting close to $2000 I would go with either a Stack or Atlas and never worry about it again. I think you can get the Stacks for around $1899

if you are going to do this you are going to need a flip kit search pirate. some have done the flip and loved it. if yor 231 is in good shape i would think of doing a "box 4 rocks" conversion. uses the front of your 231 and mates it to the d300. this is all for not because the IH 300 is diferent from the jeep version

find a jeep 300 i did want hard i used www.car-part.com found one local with a warranty. good luck on your endevor.

I have the Mad Rooster kit but it's pretty much the same thing as box for rocks. The cost of the t-case kit, the d300, and flip kit will probably approach the klune-v or atlas range. I chose the duals because I wanted the option to keep my 2.62:1 low range for the sand and also have the superlow 7.12:1 low for the rocks. At that time, the multi speed t-cases weren't on the market. I can also put a 4:1 kit in the d300 for more gearing options if I want. Anyway, I just wanted to show it off since the topic came up.

I can't really say because I had a dana20 before I put the 231/300 in. The 20 shifter was waaaaay forward. I had to unbuckle to reach it. Now it's in a very comfy position. If I had to guess, I would say about 6" forward max. If your shifters are too far back, just bend them forward. Lay them down like a sandrail turning brake. A torch, vice. and bfh should do the trick.
