Like I said earlier you might want to check out the topo map at Mesa world of maps, I know the blm land you have to get a permit for. The proving grounds wasn't that large but the white tanks park covered everything else and that's what has the no offroad travel all over it. I would love to go up that big dirt road you see going up the south east side!

Subject: TJ/XJ/ZJ front suspension bushings

I got the bushings replaced. The bushings are located where the upper control
arms are attached to the front axle. I decided against doing it myself and
took it to Darner instead. The mechanic who performed the work said he has
done about 15 bush replacements and he hated every one of them! Darner uses a
compact press with a 6ft lever to remove and install these bushings. It took
him about 5 hours to do the job. I learned a couple of things that you all
with TJ/XJ/ZJs might want to be aware of:

* These bushings should last the life of the vehicle, but suspension
modifications will cause premature wear.
* Don't even try to do this job yourself unless you have plenty of time and
the proper tools. You can't press these bushings on/off with basic tools.
* The bushings need to be pressed on. If they are hammered on expect them to
last about 10,000 miles.
* Suspension modifications may shorten the life of the bushings. The mechanic
figured that I might get 20,000 miles out of the new ones. This means the
bushings will probably be getting replaced every 2 years.
* Make sure you check these for wear once or twice a year.

The total cost was around $300. This included a front end alignment.

Hey,
I kind of like the red jeep on the left side in the group photo! Is that a new style? Or perhaps on XJ which rolled a couple times and rounded out the body!

This is Shannon (Troys wife)..we went and talked to the ranger at the white tanks mountain park yesterday, and he told us in order to wheel there you must have a Trust land permit. The permits are $20 for a family, and $15 for an individual and its good for a year. Not a bad price to wheel on trust land.
Here is the address to get the permit
1616 West Adams
Phoenix, AZ 85007
Phone is (602) 364-2753
they will give you the permit right there, no waiting for it in the mail or anything.

Well that is about it, hope this helps

Joining the Arizona State Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs will not only get
you a State Land Trust permit, but also information on 4x4 events going on
around the state and the country, road closure information, a larger network
of 4-wheeling folks, and discounts at many 4x4 shops.

If there are any members of the ASA4WDC out on any AZVJC trail rides we
[AZVJC] won't have any trouble.

I happen to be the Conservation/Environmental Chair for the ASA4WDC and the AZ
Dust Devils 4WDC delegate. I am looking for someone to take over the C/E Chair
since I just don't have time.

What should we bring with us? I got 2 different membership cards when I
joined. But I didn't get any sort of state land use permit with the package.
Is the membership card enough?

Subject: White Tanks run and welcome

Hello all and welcome to Joe and/or Eric!

Unless I get really inspired tonight or tomorrow night I won't be attending
the Saturday run to the White Tanks. I haven't even had time to do a
post-run inspection on the J-10, much less fix the exhaust. For those of
you who weren't there, I tore part of one exhaust pipe off and crushed the
other, so my truck is not very happy with me at the moment. If I feel up to
it I may just cut off the crushed section on the drivers side pipe and pop
in a set of earplugs for the trip.........don't know yet. If I do go, I
won't be running the class 4 section again. My truck made it through, but
it really should be higher before I do anything like that again.

George Andrews was nice enough to give me the old springs out of his
Cherokee, so in the next couple of weeks I'm going to build up some new
spring packs and get my truck up in the air a little more. Once that's done
and the exhaust is fixed I'll definitely be up for another run through "The
Wash" (we really ought to find out if it has a name).

My thanks go out to Ross, George, Scott, Troy, and all the others who helped
spot for me going through the most difficult section of terrain I've ever
attempted. I wasn't planning on running the class 4 stuff last weekend, but
decided to give it a shot when I saw Shannon taking her Cherokette in. Her
truck (Tonka) and mine are almost identical in rocker and differential
clearance, so I figured that if Tonka could make it, mine could. My truck
has a far smaller departure angle than Tonka does, but I'm used to
that........that's why I call it "The Plow" :-)

Anyway....I had a great time last weekend and I'll try to make it out to
watch and help spot on Saturday.

Well not sure who I am talking to, Joseph or Eric, But any way, Sure come on with.. You need a land use permit from the state, because we will be on or pass through State trust land. After that we will be on Fed owned land. Even the White Tanks park ranger had no idea what part is which, but sugests we get State permits just to play it safe.

Nice web site, and looks like you will not have problems running the trail... now the question is, do we have a brave person to try the water fall a mile west of the end of the 4.0 trail end....?

By the way group.. since this is about the only trail we can run in this area, we should just call this the White tanks trail... I will not be scouting anymore trails in the white tanks. The Ranger did point out a nice river west of there that runs from I-10 at Exit 109 and it runs north to Morristown up on Hwy 60... about a 30 mile sandy rocky trek. Being new to the area I will ask, has anyone ever run the Hassayampa river bottom?

Don't feel bad Len, Shannon and I will spot too, Tonka has said it needs a
break.. the pan hard rod that ties the front Axle to the frame has some play
in it, so we don't want want to push it that hard this weekend, but will
have a blast watching and pointing... well heck after 185,000 miles, it just
might be time to replace that thing anyway.
after a good look over this week, we found one dent in the drivers side
rocker pan, but to small to see unless you are look for it.

Need to take some time and do work on Tonka before we take on another 4.0
trail, so we will just watch and take photos this trip.. but would not miss
it for the world.

You will not need a land use permit as long as somebody in the group has one. If they are a member of the state 4X4 org(sorry I can't remember the formal name) they have one. I will try to make it, but need the directions and meeting time.
