Sorry buddy, we had a great run and fun. Better that it went on the flat land then with two tires in the air and a third buried in the sand, at a 30 degree angle. You get to lead next time. Nice bunch of people you hooked up with, we look forward to another trip.....

Well, it appears I've joined the ranks of those who never made it to the trailhead today...The plan was simple enough, go out and have a good time with the gang out west of White Tanks, I barely got the JEEP off the trailer, when disaster struck in the form of an extremely disheartening grinding and chewing noise emminating from the drivetrain. At first, it was assumed I had grenaded the tranny, but closer inspection upon arrival back home, revealed the culprit of the God Awful crunching sound from underneath my JEEP to actually be the clutch. I can't see it making that much noise without at least the pressure plate being completely nuked. Well, I think the only appropriate action would be to wallow in my own self pity for at least today (while everyone else has fun) and then tear it apart starting tomorrow..sob,... sniffle,... It only makes it worse that this would have been my first run with you guys, Geez, I hope this doesn't set the tone for future trips. I have a 82 CJ-7 and I am having a hell of a time

anyone knew of a decent, low priced mechanic that
deals alot with Jeeps? The one I was using has moved
and I need another. I would perfer info on places on
the west side of town (I'm located at 67th and
Glendale). As soon as I can get the work done I'll be

Subject: Welcome new members!

Looks like we got a quite few new members over the last couple of months; we
are up to 114! Welcome! This makes us by far the largest single group of
4x4 enthusiasts in Arizona!

We have people with all levels of experience. Some of you may never have taken
your Jeep off-road and you're looking for a fairly easy trail to get your feet
wet. There are good trails out there for this. Some of you may be bored with
anything less than Class 4. Good trails for that too.

Some of you are more interested in hunting down remote ghost towns, or perhaps
rockhounding, or camping in remote areas. A lot of us have these interests
too.

So drop us a line and tell us where you are located and what kind of trail
runs you want to try, and what kind of Jeep you have. If you want to try a
particular trail, post it and a proposed date. Our trail runs typically have
from 2 to 10 Jeeps involved (and more people). The longer the advanced notice,
the more people tend to come. Family and pets are welcome too.

We typically do 1 or 2 major runs a month, and sometimes several smaller
wildcat runs someone may think up on short notice. So if Thursday you have a
hankerin' to go four wheeling, post a note and you'll probably get a few to
come with you. We have been labeled as "The Wildcat Bunch". We highly
recommend you don't go out on trails alone.

Check out our archives at:

http://www.egroups.com/list/az_vjc/.

You will find past trail reports and upcoming plans.

Be sure to check out our web site at:

You can check out all of our trip photos in one place, with a different album
for each trip, at:

And check out my site at:

At these sites you will find recommendations for minimum safety and
communications equipment, trail ratings explained and equipment expected, and
information on what few rules we have.

I will write this one for my wife... with her help.... but the next time she drives, she can do the bloody thing herself..... ;)

Now lets see if the sun baked my brain to much.. we met at the Love's gas station around 8AM.. I think we had a great showing too.. the list is... 1XJ, 2 TJ's, 1 SJ Cherokee, 1 J10 pickup, a Chevy Z71, and a Nissan p/u. (picking up a CJ at the sand hills Ross Skinner. who will be joining the AZ-VJC soon) Willam Mish was there too, but toasted something in his drive train and packed it back up on the trailer and had to head home.

We played a few minutes on the sand hill, but since I and the wife wanted to go to harder stuff, we headed up the trail. Went up the easy wash to the class 4, and just turned into a trail run. We got to the start, and agreed (told?) Scott (TJ) that since he had the best setup truck, we would "let" him take the first shot at it. The Flex in his TJ was just awesome, he made trails look easy, followed up be George in his new paint job, followed up by my wife unit then Ross and Len doing the tail end charle thing..

The first real obstical was a pinch point v cut into living rock.... the thing would have stopped a hummer dead, and a tank would turn turtle, but a dirt bike would have made it easy. The fun part about it was that right in the exit of the pinch was a bolder the size of a suit case sitting right in the middle of the trail... most the Jeeps got through it with out much problem, but len had to take a interesting line.... Man you really need more lift... took the whole group a good 3 hours to go the 1/2 mile trail, but was well worth the time...

I must toot the wife's wistle here... She did a GREAT job, other then a scratch or two on the bottom side, and a scrape or two from a tree or two no damage to Tonka. The guys on the trip kept coming up to me or her and saying what a great job she was doing.. and since this was her first time rock crawling, you must all give her a hand the next time you see her. I was worried about her 88 XJ (4 inch lift, 31 X 10.5's on 15X8" rims) making this trail, but (tonka) was a real great trail truck.. it needs one more inch of lift, and a locker in the rear at least.

Next weekend will be the real run......... So .......we need more AZ-VJC member to show up. the trail is not to bad and will challange all those who come. If the wife's XJ can make it I am sure a little lifted CJ/TJ... ETC can make this trail.. but it will be real slow at points.
Two thumbs up to the trail spotters, and friendly laughs and coments. Was a real nice crew of Jeepers who came out to have some fun on the rocks, throw some sand, and talk lines up rocks.

hope to see you all out there on the 19th for one more go at it... and we must talk the wife unit into doing the driving again...

There is a fellow down the street from me who has an old Postal Jeep
sitting on the street for sale. It is a white '72 with new tranny and
rebuilt engine. Not in bad shape outside but bad interior. It looks like it
was used to carry mail?? ;-) I don't know much about them but he wants
$2200 for it and it has been there for 8-10 months. So, my first guess is
that he is asking too much. It might be a fun restoration project, but is
it worth it? Is anyone interested? If so I will get the phone number etc. I
think these rigs are 2 wheel drive but they have the cool sliding doors and
some of the old classic jeep look.

I had an excellent time on this one. I have to tip my hat to your wife. She did an excellent job driving a basically stock XJ w/31's thru the wash. I really was looking forward to seeing Wildcat's CJ3B in action. Hopefully he'll have the tranny problem worked out and be on the trails soon. After leading Saturday's run from Bartlett Lake to Horseshoe Lake I was content to ease into the pack on this one. But somehow you all 'volunteered' me to go first thru the class 4. George's SJ looked great with the new mandarin orange paint job. After watching George's rig I think the most heard line of the day was "lockers...gotta get me some"

I'll probably not make it next week. Need to stay home and get some work done after doing 2 runs this weekend. For those of you looking for rocker protection I finally managed to test out the Sun Performance rocker guards I've had on over the last few runs. I finally found a boulder big enough to hit them with and I'd say they just paid for themselves :)

Thanks to all of you for a great time.

Me and a buddy were out near white tanks today so we thought we would drop by to see if we would run into anyone. We turned on the scanner to check channel 4 but didn't here anyone. Anyways, we went around to the front gate on the east side and talked to the ranger there. This is the part ya gota pay attention to...
He showed us a topo map of white tanks. There is NO four wheeling allowed anywhere in the area. If you wander into the proving grounds the military will catch ya with their helicopters and handcuff you. $400 dollars and a night in jail. If you wander into the BLM land you will be arrested by the sherriff. If you wander into the private land you are subject to tresspassing charges. There was NO public land on the map, it was all either proving grounds, private or BLM land. He said there are line of sight sensors all throughout the area, able to distinguish between vehicle and animals. All this is straight from the rangers mouth. Anyways, we went to Mesa world of maps and pulled out the white tank topo's and confirmed that there is no public land there. Ya'll can make your own decisions but I think the only thing I'll be doing in that area is hiking on the designated trails, and not tell winter....If ya want you can go to the front gate and talk to the ranger and check out the maps they have up there. It is clearly marked on the maps but nowhere within the land itself.

Brian,
I had a pulley lock up on me last week before the trail42 run and the heater
control valve busted under the preassure. I noticed on the way home from
turning around on the trail because my rig and I were not up to the task of
tackeling the all mighty hill climb. that every time I would start climbing

from the top of the dash. Do you think that when I took out the heater
control valve out and put in two connecters, this is causing the problem?

David,

I've seen that before on my Cherokee as well, and seem to remember some
discussion of it about a year ago on the jeep+willys newsgroup. About
the only time I've noticed the heater or a/c stop blowing (they've both
done it) was on a stretch of I-70 about 20 miles east of where it ends in
Utah. There's a long uphill stretch, and the blower will stop coming out
the dash, and blow just a bit through the top of the dash. I've noticed
that if I let off the gas just a bit, and then get on it again, the
heater/AC starts blowing like normal again. Sounds like a vacuum issue.
Now note, it's only on this one section and again heading eastbound up to
the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado... weird.

Sorry to hear about your clutch, but at least it happened before getting on
the trail. I had the clutch fork pivot break free on my old Dodge truck. It
took all of 5 seconds for it to bounce around inside the bellhousing before it
blew a hole through the top! When we finally got a closer look at it, the
bellhousing had 5 large cracks, a hole the size of a creme filled donut on
top, and was twisted like discarded aluminum can! Fortunately I was in town
when it happened.

I started tearing apart the ZJ on Sunday only to discover that among all the
bits and pieces of metal my boyfriend has accumulated over the years there
wasn't a round piece that was the right size for pushing out the old bushing.
Of course, the sleeve that the control bolt goes through moved while I had the
arm off and it took about 3.5 hours to get the control arm back on. The ZJ
will be going into the Jeep dealer to get the bushing replaced. This is going
to be expensive.

Troy: I am thinking about getting an older wagoneer to use as a rat truck. I
need a second vehicle. Would one of those big cruisers be a good choice? It
might be used to haul a trailer once in a while too.

I included them in with the other B2H pix so look for driver names as follows:

nick1 - nick6
scott1 - scott6

These are not as high quality as those directly from the digital camera,

video. Email me your address and I will mail you the CD. You can view them
with Windows Media Player or the like.

Dan - do you want me to send these to the azvjc photo site also??

I talked to the ranger their at the White Tanks park entrance on the east side. He said they don't bother much with people on foot but anyone operating a motor vehicle is a target. He admitted it all depended on the rangers mood of the day.

Subject: State Trust Land info

The following information is from the AZ Game and Fish Department, and covers
what State Trust Lands are and what you need to do before you can travel on
this land.

I believe membership in the ASA4WDC covers your state land recreational
permit (Linda, can you clarify?) that is discussed below. I highly recommend
everyone become an individual member of ASA4WDC if you are not already via
another club membership.

The ASA4WDC web site is at:

http://www.asa4wdc.org/

The Game & Fish web site is at:

http://www.gf.state.az.us/

Lots of good stuff there.

------------------------------------------
What is State Trust Land?

State Trust Land is land that was granted to Arizona by the federal
government when Arizona became a state in 1912. Trust lands total
approximately 9.4 million acres and are managed by the State Land Department.
The land is held in trust by the State of Arizona, and by law, must be used
to generate revenue to fund public schools, universities and other state
institutions. State Trust Land is NOT public land. You must have a permit to
be on State Trust Land.

Do I need a permit to operate my OHV on State Trust Land?

Yes. You must have a recreation permit or a hunting or fishing license to be
on State Land. However, a hunting or fishing license is valid only if you are
actively engaged in hunting or fishing.

Recreational Permits are available for individuals and families and are
issued for one year from the date of purchase. The Individual Permit is
$15.00 and the Family Permit is $20.00.

Non-profit group and event recreational permits are also available. They
require a different permit and usually require a longer processing time.

You may pick up your recreational permit in person at the State Land
Department main office at 1616 West Adams, Phoenix AZ 85007. Permit
applications can also be requested by mail or by telephone during normal
business hours by calling (602) 542-4631.

Rules to follow on State Trust Land

Most state land is already leased to someone. When recreating on state land,
please keep in mind that someone else is trying to make a living from that
land.

* Leave gates the way you find them, either open or closed.
* Vehicles must travel on existing roads and trails.
* Camp at least 1/4 mile from any livestock or wildlife water
catchments, tanks, etc.
* Obey posted signs, respect closed areas.
* If you pack it in - pack it out, don't liter.

Heck yes, they ride like caddys, and off road like a Jeep, will pull a
trailer like a bull. BUT be ready for a fuel hog. Like most big trucks you
will be lucky if you get anything over 15 MPG. Rat Truck? as for hauling a
trailer, it will pull a real good weight and do it with no problems.

Got any Questions, or need someone to look one over for you let me know.

I've done some trails up on the Rim, but nothing challenging. I'd be very interested in heading up to the cooler climate real soon for some camping and trail fun, but don't know any good trails. Any ideas?

at least a class 3, preferably 4.
