Short notice I know, but the weekend of June 19/20 I will be wheeling in Moab. My plan is to leave Friday 18th noonish and return Monday 21st bright and early in the morning. No plans on exactly which trails will be run though.

Some camping, some wheeling ... should be fun. Anyone here is welcome to come along. I will be in my '98 XJ (it can't seem to get enough of Moab). My buddy will be along with his '90 XJ.

Can anyone recommend someone in the Phoenix area to do a differential
carrier replacement. I'm converting my Dana 44 from a tracloc to a
Lockrite so I have to put a standard carrier back in.

Greetings,

I can recommend A-1 Differential, 2231 W Adobe Dr.
North Phoenix. 587-1863

Steve has done differential and gearset changes on both
my truck (77 F250 4WD) and my Jeeps (75 CJ5, 47 CJ2A)
over the years. He's done Detroits and Power-Loks
for me, and I know he's experienced with Lockright's and
ARB's. Very happy with his work.

Most of the 4WD shops will do it for you as well. Shop around,
as prices may vary a little.

Hope this helps,

Uncle Mike
Phoenix, AZ.

LockRites are nice lockers. Had one in my Geo Tracker. Really improved its
offroad performance.

I have a TracLoc in the ZJ's rear axle and it will stay until the entire axle
gets replaced. Actually, I haven't had a choice! There aren't many options for
the D35C that I would even consider! The TracLoc actually works quite well
(the 105 in. wheelbase helps) and at 80k miles it is still as tight as it was
when it was installed by the factory.

New diff carriers cost $50-$75, but you might be able to get one for a salvage
yard for less.
LockRites are relatively easy to install and so are diff carriers so the cost
shouldn't be too high.

Have fun!
Linda

I am getting ready to change my gearing. I have done some research and have come to the the conclusion that "Toys By Troy Metal Fabrications" 3650 W. Sweetwater Phoenix 697-8753, is the best bet. I do most of my own work on my vehicles. I installed my Terraflex lift myself and have always tinkered with cars. This is one of the few jobs I would not do myself, and I would not consider price in my decision. Also TBT fabricates almost anything for your Jeep and does an excellant job.
Also if you have any intentions of installing lockers this would be the time to do it.
But thats only my opinion. Good luck.
Joe

I'd just like to review the plans for Saturday with everyone.

The main group will meet in the grocery store parking lot southwest of N
Scottsdale Rd and Carefree Hwy at 8:00 AM. We will meet up with Dave and any
others camping out at Rattlesnake Cove between 8:30-8:45. From there it's
only a few minutes to the turnoff where we will air down.

The trail will end up near Horseshoe Lake. We should finish up in the early
afternoon.

Please be sure to gas up your Jeep before we meet. There is a gas station
off Carefree Hwy between I-17 and the meeting place. For those coming up
Scottsdale Rd there are not any stations that I remember north of Frank
Lloyd Wright (Bell Rd).

It sounds like we've got between 12-16 Jeeps in the group. We'll be using
channel 4 as usual.

See you all soon :)

Subject: Speedometer

I was out driving with a friend who had a gps the other day and the difference between the speedometer reading and the gps was quite large. I really didn't know my Jeep could go that fast. So, I found a mathmatical way to get your correct speed, within 2% it is supposed to be.

(rpm) x (actuall tire size) divided by (xfer case gear ratio) x (gear ratio) x (336) = mph

My tires are by tape measure, 30.1 inches. My transfer case (the 231) is 4.11 gear ratio. My 5th gear ratio is .85
So....

(2500 rpm) x (tire size 30.1) = 75250
(xfer case 4.11) x (5th gear .85) x (336) = 1173.816
75250/1173.816 = 64.1 mph!

At around 3200 rpm my speedometer would show about 72 mph, I am actually travelling 82 mph!

Well, just fyi

I doubt your xfer case has 4.11 gear reduction in it. Maybe your axles are 4.11? Anyway, you should take transmission 5th gear * tcase high range * axle gears * tire size, or at least some variant on that. Your tcase whould have 1:1 in high range, and your 5th gear is either 1:1 or <1:1 for overdrive.

(2500 rpm) x (tire size 30.1) = 75250
(axle gears 4.11) x (tcase gears 1.0) * (5th gear .85) x (336) = 1173.816
75250/1173.816 = 64.1 mph!

Maybe the above is correct?
Correct me if I'm wrong ...

BTW, the MPH reading from the GPS will have slight error because of the error factored into the GPS systems that are not military grade equipment. You'll note that the GPS receivers sometimes show a positive MPH while you're sitting at a stoplight. This is because the GPS system is in essence moving your location a few hundred feet. As a result your receiver thinks you are moving. This can cause the GPS output to have slightly erroneous results.

Is there any way I can post messages in eGroups so that I
don't have to manually insert a <RETURN> at the end of every
line. I'm surprised the posting textarea doesn't isn't
configured for that.

Just curious.
