>Yes, quick discos are really worthwhile on my XJ. I have stock length
Tomken discos that were modified to handle the 4" lift. Because I've got a
late model XJ (read: vibrations off the lot) I opted for a Slip Yoke
Eliminator kit and a custom rear driveshaft from Driveline Service (on
Washington in downtown Phoenix). You can probably get by with the stock
length driveshaft but I had terrible vibes after the lift, so the SYE
resolved them. Front driveshaft is fine for 3-4 inch lift.

Yep, original battery. I used a baking soda solution for the worst
spots, and then hosed everything down real well. Hope that's good
enough. Never had this happen before, though I've seen a battery explode
when jumping. I'm glad I wasn't standing next to either battery when
they went.

Ouch!! A bummer indeed. You may want to hose the underhood area real
well...that acid will corrode. I assume it was still the OEM battery. I
hadn't heard of this as a common problem, so hopefully, for us, this was
an isolated incident.

Don't feel too bad. I had my battery explode on me about a week ago.
Went to start up the TJ at a store, and BOOM! I thought some kid threw
an M-80 under my Jeep. No real damage. Just a small dent in the hood to
remind me of the experience. Luckily, there was a Checker within walking
distance, so I was on my way in about an hour. Now I just have to find
out where I can dispose of my old battery. Anyone know if the Glendale
landfill takes hazardous waste?

Went screwing around in the Agua Frea river bottom today.. lots of glass,
and junk down there... found me a nail and the tire went down... (don't
ya hate it when that happens) soft stuff and nice little mounds to climb
down there. just to dang small and no place to go but up and down the
area 1/2 a mile or so in that area... might be more lower down the river.
Monday morning Back to Discout Tire to get this one fixed.. and then
Tonka has her Extra foot again.

31x10.50r15s rubbed lightly (rubbed the paint off) in the front wheel wells on my ZJ with a 4.5 lift, but the neither the tires or the wheel wells suffered any damage. 33" tires are a different case. I am still trimming the front wheel wells. The last of the trimming needs to be done by a body shop -- there's a lip in the front wheel wells that needs to be flattened and welded to get it (and keep it) out of contact with the tires.
Another thing you might look at is lengthening the front bump stops. You might lose some articulation, but it's better than destorying the tires or the XJ body.

Subject: Saturday Coves Run Report
Hi All,
17-20 vehicles and about 30 people came out for the National Trails Day "Celebrating 100 years of trails" 4x4 trail ride. The trip was to the 4th cove at Saquaro Lake. There were a few AZVJCers in the group.
The Coves/Rolls OHV area was packed! We headed down the trail with a group of 6 vehicles ahead of us. We got to the first hill and got caught in a traffic jam, but after that it was smoooth sailing -- until we got lost. After getting our bearings it turned out that we were just north of the 4th cove, but we couldn't get in there! The place was packed with campers -- some of whom planted their tents in the middle of the trai! We ended up doing the raffle on top of camper shell hill. While there we heard, on the CB, that a member of another group had rolled on one of the steep hills, but couldn't get anymore information.
The trip out was more of a traffic jam. We ran into 3 groups each with about 10 vehicles going different directions. We finally made it through, tried out a really steep loose hill and then drove back to the starting point. We were back at the beach around midnight where we said our farewells and headed for home.
I'd like to thank everybody who came out for a night of 'wheeling. I hope you had a goood time.
Linda
trip leader.

Subject: Jeep Jamboree recap
Just got back from Jeep Jamboree-Canyon de Chelly. What a fantastic
weekend!! 57 Jeeps, 103 people from 15 states. We broke into groups of 5,
each with a Navajo guide riding in one of the Jeeps. The guides were all
from families (or related to families) who actually live in the Canyon
during the summer months. Half of the group went up Canyon del Muerto
(North Canyon) on day one. The other half went to Canyon de Chelly (South
canyon). On Day 2 we switched and did the opposite canyon. As you might
expect, these folks were all great and many new friends were made. The CB's
made perfect on-the-move narration of caves, ruins, petro-glyphs,
picto-graphs, horses, sheep, farms, fields, history, lore, and on and on.
On the first day we had wind gusts of up to 80 mph (70 is hurricane, I
think). Much sand blowing and quite chilly, but fun and beautiful
nonetheless. I had my top down as did only a handful of hearty souls.
Although it was uncomfortable, I probably still have a top because it was
safely stowed!. Day 2 was much nicer with gentle sprinkles for about an
hour to keep the sand/dust down. It warmed up a bit and what a place to
see!!. We got in about 7 hours of roading each day. Went deep into each
canyon and heard from the source what live is/was like there. This is an
opportunity very few people get since you must be accompanied by a Navajo
guide to even go into the canyons. Saturday night we were entertained by
one of the family members and his children with local dances, songs, flute
and drum music and great stories. The Navajos are story tellers and the
stories are handed down through the generations. The become more elaborate
as they grow but are loaded with history, symbolism, fact and fantasy, and
often humor. I will do this one again next year for sure. Weather aside,
there wasn't a downside. This was well organized and a very special place
that I will never forget.
The roads were not particularly tough. Starting with 1 and at worst
(best??) about a 2.5. We must have crossed the water about 50 times over 2
days and that was where most of the challenge was., but oh, the views were
undescribable. I took about 3 hours of video and Tricia took about 100
digital photos. A selection will be up in a couple of days at our
PhotoPoint site. I won't post any here since this was not an AZVJC run, but
I will post the url.
I also believe that I got another recruit for AZVJC. Ed and Aranda from
Scottsdale may join and they also may come on the Bartlett/Horseshoe run on
Saturday.
If anyone would like more info on this jamboree, please let me know. I will
be happy to share any of what I learned with those interested.

Dave --
I had the stock length discos on when my XJ was stock height, and then had 4" extensions welded in the middle to increase the length by 4" once I did my lift.
Make sure you have the correct length discos for your setup because you can puncture your fenderwells with the top of the disco shafts if they are too long. I've got a friend that munched the bottom of his airbox because he was wheeling with his discos installed.
Good luck --

Hello all
Well, I made it back from Kentucky in one piece, and after 3500 miles of
driving the Buick I need a Jeep fix! I'm going to be going out to the White
Tanks Mtns on Sunday with a couple of non-Jeep friends. Would anyone like
to go along to preview the 4.0 rock trail for the following weekend? There
are still lots of trails that I haven't explored out there, and I thought
I'd make another try at the "killer hill."
One of the non-Jeepers has never driven off pavement before, so this will be
a pretty laid back day.....probably spend an hour or two on the sand hills
and run some easy trails for him to get used to his new truck. I do reserve
the right to always take the more difficult trail, though.........just ask
Troy and David!

Welcome Brian. you have become part of a great group of people. I'm relatively new myself, and all I can say is if the fantastic attitudes and helpfulness I've seen online extend to the trail, You and I are going to be quite happy with our new 4 wheelin' friends.
Be Good.
Later.

I'm probably a most definite maybe on this one....... Yup, boss says I can
go! I asked a few guys with CJ-7's along, one hasn't been off road much in
the CJ, still feels a little jittery, but I'll see if he's still open to the
idea later this week. Ross, my brother, may be towing out my JEEP for me,
since he wants to go but will have his 5 sons and wife along (this is no
exaggeration, folks!!) Since my wife is not going, I'll probably see if
Motoman can copilot for me . He may not be able to because he became a Daddy
again today! Anyway, I would like a chance at some rock if we can spare the
time, maybe while everyone is at the sand hill, trouble is I don't think
we'll have enough time to run the whole trail and i'd like someone with rock
experience in there with me. I'd also like to show you guys the wash I ran
up earlier (website has pic's of where it ends up, but no inbetween shots).
What time were you planning on being out there??

Why not use the Jamboree for this? They have done this 8 times in the past.
It is extremely well organized and they have all of the contacts in place.
It will be done again next year in June - I have already set aside the
time. As an alternative, I would be willing to co-host a 2 day in the fall.
If someone else is interested in helping share the organizing chores, we
could set this up. At the very least we can begin to find out pricing, etc.
The fall is supposed to be a spectacular time to go thru the canyon(s)

late model XJ (read: vibrations off the lot) I opted for a Slip Yoke

Linda

I will
be happy to share any of what I learned with those interested.

as they grow but are loaded with history, symbolism, fact and fantasy, and
often humor.

John,
Thanks for sharing your experiences at the Canyon de Chelly Jeep Jamboree. I
was really curious to find out if it was worthwhile. Sounds like one I have
to put on my "to do" list. We just did the Big Bear (San Bernadino, CA) Jeep
Jamboree and I can highly recommend that one too.

The Motorola Dust Devils 4WDC made a club trip to Canyon de Chelley a couple
of years ago. It takes a bit of organizing since a canyon guide will only
take so many vehicles through the canyon at one time and camping/hotel space
is limited.

Subject: outing this Sunday....attention Brian
Hello all
Well, I made it back from Kentucky in one piece, and after 3500 miles of
driving the Buick I need a Jeep fix!
