:eek:Had surgery on Thurs for a deviated suptum (I used to use my face to stop things like fists, helmets, trees, etc) that has prevented me from breathing properly for 25 years. While inside my snout doing repairs, the doc found pollups and other nastiness clogging my airways. As any good mechanic would, he repaired/removed/roto-rootered since he was in there already. Welllllllll, 3 days post surgery, my eyes are opening and I can almost see my face thru the swelling. Kind of like getting hit across the nose and eye orbits with a bat if ya know what I mean. On top of it all, as a result (the docs leave this part out till it's over) I have the worlds worst sinus infection coupled with a pounding headache usually associated with such cases.
I've stopped my pain meds because I need to function outside of watching Spongebob on the cartoon channel with my kids (kids mildly amused at daddy drooling on himself) and because I have to report back to work tomorrow.
Just whining out loud to all who will listen that YOUR day could be worse:D

Snort Garlic juice. After you pick yourself up from the floor you'll be just fine. :)

There are also some accupressure and head massage techniques at that website.
Quoted in part:
Natural Sinus Remedy 2: Garlic Nasal Drops
Ingredients: One whole bulb of fresh garlic
Method:
1. Crush the garlic to extract the juice, then mix with twice as much water to make the drops, which should be stored in a glass jar.
2. Clean and blow your nose.
3. Lie down then use an eye dropper to insert 2-3 drops into each nostril - sniff fairly hard so the drops go right up your nose. If the solution irritates too much, reduce the number of drops. Apply 2-3 times a day during a sinus infection or head cold, and regularly as a preventative.
Alternatively, make a paste with the garlic juice and honey, and apply it up inside your nostrils with a cotton bud.

I think Joe should give Hardline a custom title...
Master OF ALL Research or something... she has the skill and ability to find anything on the next/books/newspapers/magazines.
But, Ouch I feel your pain, when I had knee surgery back in 2001 doc didnt tell me that I wouldn't be able to do the #2 for couple weeks because the pressure would just KILL ME!!!!
and not to mention that I would have a headache from heII for the longest time

I hear the really fun part is when you go back to the Dr. so they can pull all of the packing and gauze out of your nose. My buddy had his deviated suptum repaired not too long ago and he couldn't believe how much stuff the doctor pulled out of his nose.....it just kept coming and coming and coming  He said it felt really wierd.

Already done Fri the day after surgery:eek: Correct in that there was about 8-10 FEET of that stuff packed up there. Most painful experience I've had since I sutured myself on a hunting trip 20 or so years ago. I almost blacked out:o I can tolerate pain in the 8-9 scale without narcotics, but for only a short time. The packing removal spiked the 1-10 pain meter at about a 14 and bent the indicator. Tylenol only from here on out, need a clear head for work this week.

its such an aweful feeling having that "packing" pulled out!
i had the surgery done 3 years ago, and it was an awful experience. i'm not sure if the packing removal was worse then when i had to go back for the doc to go in with forceps and pull out the "crusts".
i had a friend that went to the same surgeon i did. he still had trouble and went to another surgeon. surgeon number 2 basically said the guy that did mine is a hack and did a hack job on my friend. i still get infections and irritation a lot, but i don't think i want to go through that again.
and you got pain killers!??! my doc wouldn't give me any

Used to work at an Otolarangologist office and we had so many surgery follow up visits for that - so miserable. I didn't see a single one that looked anything but purely miserable 2 weeks later. Rest up - pop all the oxycottons or morphine/ hydrocodones they gave you (in recommended dosage of course ;)) and feel better soon :)

Hope all heals well and it was worth the discomfort!! :D

ya, mine was brutal. i felt kinda sorry for the prissy college girl who had the job of catching all the ooz that came out with the gauze. i guess it was one of her first days there as a student. i bet she isn't in that field of medicine from the look she had as 10 feet of gauze was being pulled out of my face by the Dr.
I can only describe the pulling of the gauze as the Dr trying to pull start my head like a chainsaw. luckilly he got it started on the second pull :D

:( such a bad surgery. The laser surgery in the back of the throat for snoring is just as bad....Ben needs to have the deviated septum surgery done, as he cannot breath with his mouth closed most times.....but I'm not pushing him to get it done as I know how bad it really is.....The best way to describe it is waking up feeling like you took the brunt of a collision with a freight train with your face.

Amber,
I like your analogy better....freight train....LOL Having stopped many objects with my face (in my younger years), I was thinking Louisville slugger = 1, Me = 0
Should be better in a week or two. Took me most of today to swim out of the painkiller haze, tylenol only from here. I've kept the leftover supply "good stuff" for later medical emergencies;)

take care of yourself and don't sign up for any rematches with that louisville slugger....! :D When i was in the Navy, a Seabee buddy of mine had that surgery done...they did it a little bit wrong and his nose healed crooked. He had to go through it a second time. I guess you can feel a little bit better knowing you only have to do it once.... :D

I need to have this done... Had my nose busted too many times in football as a kid, and a soccer ball a time or two. My nose looks fine from the outside but my right nostril is tiny inside vs. my left. And I am privy to sinus infections all the time. Does insurance cover this? What is the process to get the ball rolling?

Find a good ENT. Follow the rules, jump thru the hoops. Some ins co require a referral from a primary care doc and some allow you to chose where you go. I'm very happy with the service of my doc, he has done both my kids ear tubes as well as my sons tonsils. I need a volume discount at this rate:) PM me for his info if you have interest.

Wow... I must be the lucky one. I had this surgery about two years ago, and it was not too bad. I had the same problem: I could not breathe through the left nostril, due to a lifetime of allergies, plus 15 years of basketballs, sticks, and fists to the nose. :D
Apparently, I had one of the best surgeons in Phoenix, from what I have since learned. He put plastic stints in my nose that let me breathe through the packing. And the packing really wasn't that bad. I only used three of the Vicodins they prescribed me, and was back at work in two days.
But I did kinda feel like Arnold in that scene from Total Recall when the doc pulled the stints from my nose. Dang, those things were big!
Anyhoo, that surgery was one of the best decisions I ever made. My allergies are all but unnoticable now; not a single sinus infection since the surgery (I used to get about 3 a year), and I can breathe again! It's amazing how much better I feel when running or playing basketball, now that I can BREATHE!!!
Sorry to hear everyone else had such bad experience with it... :( I wonder if mine was just less invasive. But he did do the septoplasty, plus the roto-rooter job.

I feel your pain brother!
I had some of the same stuff done last year at 32 yrs old.
I had a tongsil that looked like a meat ball  so they went in and removed both, they also cut the dingle-dangle punching bag looking thing off and trimmed the back of my throat. Just when that wasnt enough pain, they straight'nd my septum and did a turbinate reduction
After only a week, I was dependent on the liquid Oxycodone and had about 3 days of bad withdraws. That was the worst 2 weeks of my life :(
I hope you feel better sooner than later :)

Now that is what happens when your ENT uses packing.... mine didnt...
He stitched in... on both sides... a hard plastic that he
pulled out of my nose... before he did this he said...
"It is going to feel like I am pulling your brain out your nose"
I really thought he was BSing me but he wasnt... it didn't
hurt that bad, on a scale from 1 being nothing to 10 being
extreme... I would say about a 6... nothing that I couldn't
handle.
His information if anyone is interested...

That is the same place I went to... ENTegrity. Except my doc was Christopher Lykins. Same procedure, too: the plastic stints. And I got the same spiel when they pulled it out! Like you said, it really wasn't that bad. :)
But I second that. Excellent outfit over there.

OK I had this surgery done last Monday morning it is now Thursday Afternoon & I feel like I was hit head on again...
My whole face hurts my front teeth are still numb, I havent slept for more than 20 min at a time since Monday
My wife got a scare of her life when I sneezed Tuesday morning and the packing was dislodged from one side of my nose (I will save the details)
After gasping all the air in the room & not sure who to call 911 or the doctor himself.. got the bleeding under control Finnaly got a hold of the Doc he advised us to remove the packing from the other side she replied HELL NO so I had to do it myself... Talk about a Total Recall experence you can feel all the packing come out from under your eyes & relieve for about 10 seconds there was a moment were I was feeling faint from the blood lost all most calling 911..
I was able do see doc on Wen. turns out my stitches failed or torn loose causing all the bleeding
Not a pleasant experence at all

I had this surgery done a couple of years ago as well. Was done by one of pioneers of the procedure. Great reputation from anybody that I had talked to. My brother had it done by someone else a couple of years prior to me and they used the gauze packing method on him, which is extremely painful.
I discussed this with my doc and he actually got angry about it, as the ENT field is trying to get doctors to not use the gauze as it causes more issues than it is worth. Gauze sticks and when it sticks inside the nose and sinus, it ends up ripping the area that is trying to heal. This ends up causing extreme pain and ultimately, many patients get infected because of it. My doc was very passionate that any patient should refuse to goto a doctor that still uses gauze. What they are using now are the plastic stints and also non-stick tampon type objects. He used the tampons on me and they came out very easy, although it is a very weird feeling and you do feel like something is coming down from your brain.
The part that I feel is the most difficult is the heeling process as it seems to take quite a few weeks to get totally back to normal. You do everything possible to not sneeze, but if it happens.....OUCH!
Anyways, if any of you are going to get this done, absolutely be sure to discuss the doctor's packing method and if they say gauze, find someone else or insist they must use stints/tampons.
Oh, someone asked about insurance coverage. Will depend on your plan, but my plan with United covered it completely no questions asked.

Had this done 5 years ago and they used lasers instead of a scalpel/roter rooter. No packing. No bleeding. Immediate results
If your ENT wont do it with lasers find someone who does. It is well worth it. I had virtually 0 down time

best stuff in the world is Alkalol. Its a nasal wash that uses organic ingredients, same recipe has been in use for over a hundred years. Works great. Walgreens or CVS sells it and usually has it in stock but you have to ask the pharmecist for it or you can order online
