Subject: June 19th Trail ride.... in a new direction.
OK folks.. time for a whole new direction. I posted this once, but got little in the way of responce. So here goes....
TRAIL RIDE!!!! JUNE 19TH.. new trail, new area... sounds interesting? Here is the details... Len Sullivan, David Oboyle and myself found a great little trail, but this trail is on the west side of the city in the White Tank moutains. (you know, the ones that the F-16's keep crashing into out by the AFB) great area.. lots of trails, a play area with a huge sand hill to climb around on and a nice little trail that wanders up a wash that leads to a few interesting challanges. There is bypass roads around the nice 4.0plus trail, there is a 2 step water fall in a side wash that has been done by a truck (2 steps 6 feet tall each.) We would love to have others come out with us and scout about, and do some trails. And the normal stuff.. kick tires, show off, brag, and compare jeeps. My wife wants to try out the 4.0, but does not have a winch, and I want to watch her do it. So folks.. Clear your calender, and get ready for some fun in the sun.
So far we have myself (with the wife doing some of the driving) Len Sullivan, DougB, David Oboyle (?) (are you going to show up too?) George Andrews (in his just painted truck) I can't think of who might have been interested...
OK so here is the deal.. Sat morning 19th of June head west out of Phoenix on I-10 to Exit 114 (miller road) and Exit South (left). The meeting place is Love's Gas station. For those of you who want breakfast...Burger king is there too. There is two meeting times... the first crew will meet at loves at 7AM.. with late jeepers getting a second shot at 8AM. For a whole hour we will be playing in the sand and telling lies. For those who feel like trying to find it on their own...GPS 33.28.25N (33 degrees 28 minutes 15 seconds N is how mine reads) 112.33.25W (112Degrees 33Min 15Sec W) pick your format. That is the sand pits where we will be playing. The north end of the 4.0 trail is 33degrees 29Min 69Sec N/112degrees 34Min 87Sec W. There is a bypass (chicken) trail for those of you who have not got the jeep for a 4.0. or you can park in the lower part of the trail and walk the trail with the Jeeps.. Plenty of places for photos of Jeeps doing what they are made for, and a nice little area not far off the highway... Channel 5 seems to be Len S's favorite, so lets go there. I will be there looking for Caffine at 7AM in a White 88 Cherokee (with out of state plates..SHHHHH)
got any questions, let me know...

Hi Jeff --- Ran it last year. Best time I have had in a long time. ---
You can run it in two or three days. We took four days. We were in no
hurry. Next time I plan on taking a week. I am taking my canoe and
checking out spider lake and plan on spending some time camping below
Rubicon Springs. It is a little like Paradise there. --- I have some
photos of the run at http://www.RubiconCargoTrailer.com/rubicontrail.htm
--- August would be a good time except for the 6th thru the 8th. The
Jeep Jamboree will be going on then. Have you thought of joining them?

Do you use a pintle hitch with your trailer? I use one on my VenturCraft camp
trailer. It's noisy, but I feel more comfortable with it than a ball hitch,
particularly off-road!
I'd love to do the Rubicon Trail and it would definitely be at least a week's
worth of vacation for me. A couple of days to get to the trailhead, drive the
trail, and then a couple of days to drive home. Spending 4-5 days on the trail
sounds a heck of a lot better than rushing through it.
The Camino del Diablo is another long off-road trail (120 miles). You can run
it in 2WD but it's good to have 4WD since there is some deep sand areas.
People drive the Camino del Diablo in 2 days, but so much gets missed! This is
another trail where the more time you can spend on it the more you enjoy it.

Hi Linda --- Pintle hitch bad Ju-Ju. They are an accident waiting to
happen. I have a lot to say about that, but to spare everyone who is not
interested, I have a write-up about it on my FAQ page at
http://www.RubiconCargoTrailer.com/faq.htm . Also, let me say that I ran
the Rubicon Trail with a ball+coupler and to prove the ability of the
ball+coupler I took a couple of photos of my trailer under extreme
articulation. Those photos are at
http://www.RubiconCargoTrailer.com/RubiconTrail/kk.htm and
http://www.RubiconCargoTrailer.com/RubiconTrail/mm.htm . --- It took me
about 24 hrs. driving time to get to Loon Lake from Jerome. So, if you
plan on doing any sleeping it is a day and a half trip to get to The
Rubicon. ---I had two friends with me and had enough food for ten days
but the Jeep Jamboree people were setting up for their annual run and I
did not want to get tangled up in that kind of a crowd. Have to spend
more time there the next time. There is so much to see. --- Glad to see
you got up to the Williams area. I do a lot of camping south of Williams
myself. Life does not get much better than that. --- D.J.Ewald

Steve,
It probably will shrink. try getting a really powerful hose nozzle and some
carpet cleaner. This will work much better, and wont shrink your carpet. Or
take it to the local self wash and use the highg pressure sprayer there..
Good luck

Has anyone installed the 1in coil spring spacer on an xj. I have a 3in spring lift and am looking for a little more room for my 31x10.5's. They are starting to rub on my inner liners and I don't want to chew up the tires on the body behind the liner. Especially in the rear. I plan on using a 1in lift block in the back and a degree shim.
I am just trying to figure out if I am going to have to get my driveshafts resized.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Anyone and everyone heading up to Bartlett on
Friday June 11th. I will be at the northeast corner of the cavecreek and carefree intersection at 5:00pm. Look for Blue Green Xj channel 4 on the CB. I will wait untill 6:00pm then I will be heading up to the flats. For thoes without directions, there are several ways to get to this intersection so grab a map and check it out. If you head north on cavecreek you will wind around through the town of cavecreek, there is a circle k and a few other mom and pop stores along the main drag through town so if any supplies and fuel are needed this is the place to do it because there is no other real facilities after you get out of town. you will see signs posted that give directions to the lake so pay close attention to the signs or just follow somone with a boat and your on your way. if you get lost or have problems give us a hollar on the cb ch4 and we will do our best to assist you.
I am sorry but I must have erased the message that the man from Safford sent. This is for him - if you need to follow somone up to the area please e-mail me back so we can decide on a place to meet that is convient for you. I know it is a long drive and may take some time for you to get to the Phx area. Let me know where you want to meet so we can get you to the fun stuff... I am accessable to all areas of the valley..

Troy,
There is another place down that way but you have to go south. Take I10 to 115th ave and head south to lower buckeye rd then take a right about two miles down the road is the crossing of the Agua Fria river. I think you can either go north or south in the river bottom. Also take my advice Air down to about 10lbs. Last weekend I got stuck in the Gila river bottom about ten miles west of this area. the fine sand is really soft and can eat a whole vehicle.. I was down to 20lbs and had to drop to 10lbs and put trees under my tires to get unstuck. man it sucked.. Are you and Shannon going to run trail42 with us?
hope to see you there

Yes, I've got a 3" procomp lift with 1" coil spacers up front (31x10.5 BigOs) Its a good setup if you've put (or plan to put) MJ shackles in the rear.
Email or reply if you have any more questions with the shims.

I mean, there's not very many people stopping by and signing the guest books, posting new pic's, ETC. I am in no way responsible for these sites, I just thought it may look better as an outsider looking in if we ALL supported the efforts of each other in the attempt to promote our group. I understand sometimes our own lives are hectic enough, but take the time to RELAX. Be selfish for ten minutes and Enjoy these sites, if you are a member, send in a photo of your ride with any pertinent info you can think of, or just sign a guest book, I know if i'm interested in seeing your rig, or hearing what you have to say, others are too (maybe they're just not as vocal as me). Without getting any more long winded than i've already been, I would like to encourage all of you to remember your interest and comments are the only thanks these people get, and I hope you all don't consider me a prude for posting this :}

Dave,
I figure the main group will leave N. Scottsdale Rd and Carefree Hwy around 8:15 on Saturday morning and should be at Rattlesnake Cove around 8:45. From there it's a short drive to the turnoff where we can all air down. See you there.

The left hand turn off I want to take is now on the tar. It is between Rattlesnake Cove and the flats. That's why I suggested you backtracking up to Rattlesnake Cove to meet up with us. The area down by the flats is pretty crowded on a Saturday morning so I'd rather use this bypass that runs about halfway up the hillside parallel to the lake and leads to the northernmost coves.

Scott,
you have set up a good plan. The last time I was at bartlett they had paved the road all the way down to
the turnoff wher you can head to the flats. is this the place to meet? where the pavment ends..
Also anyone who wants to head up on the 11th is more than welcome to join us. Friday afternoon at carefree rd. and cavecreek rd. on the southeast corner. We will have to work on a time later on this week.. deffinately before sundown.. If any one needs directions to get there just e-mail me and i'll give em up.. I am working on a quick little map I'll try to attach it to the next note i send out.

Hello!
I've got some updates on the Trail 42 run set for Saturday, June 12th.
Due to the afternoon heat I propose meeting at 8:00 AM in the parking lot near the grocery store just southwest of Carefree Hwy and Scottsdale Rd. I think it would be easier for those unfamiliar with the area to meet at this location.
At Bartlett Lake we will be starting the trail by going through the main recreation area and will need to pay a parking fee of $4 per vehicle if we stop to use any facilities. I have contacted the Cave Creek Ranger District of Tonto NF and as long as we are only passing through we will not be required to pay the fee.
I will not be camping at the lake, so far I've heard that Dave will be camping at Bartlett with his XJ on Friday night. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to have company. I propose that any one camping out at Bartlett be at Rattlesnake Cove at 8:30 and be on channel 4. That way they will be able to join up with us as we pass. From there it is only a few minutes until the road becomes gravel and we turnrnoff. At this point we can air down and disconnect our swaybars.
I prefer to take a route that runs along the hill thru a narrow sandy wash north of The Flats and leads to a few coves on the northwest side of the lake. This way we can avoid the crowds parked all over the place down at The Flats. At this point we will follow near the shore a short distance and then begin our journey on FR 42. For those that have a copy of the Arizona Atlas & Gazeteer: Topo Maps Of The Entire State, look on page 50 in the lower left corner and you'll find the trail. (If you'd like a copy they can be found at Wide World of Maps. I'd recommend getting one. Even though many of the trails we run are not well marked on it, I find it to be a valuable resource for getting a sense of where I'm going nontheless.)
Hope to see as many of you as possible,
Scott Kruize

Yes, quick discos are really worthwhile on my XJ. I have stock length Tomken discos that were modified to handle the 4" lift. Because I've got a late model XJ (read: vibrations off the lot) I opted for a Slip Yoke Eliminator kit and a custom rear driveshaft from Driveline Service (on Washington in downtown Phoenix). You can probably get by with the stock length driveshaft but I had terrible vibes after the lift, so the SYE resolved them. Front driveshaft is fine for 3-4 inch lift.

My family used to go camping there alot when we were younger and town was
farther away so I have made the trip both ways down the river (Wickenberg and
the fence for PVNGS) It is a long one but we always had a blast. This will
be the first time in a jeep so I don't know how it will be.

Don't feel too bad. I had my battery explode on me about a week ago.
Went to start up the TJ at a store, and BOOM! I thought some kid threw
an M-80 under my Jeep. No real damage. Just a small dent in the hood to
remind me of the experience. Luckily, there was a Checker within walking
distance, so I was on my way in about an hour. Now I just have to find
out where I can dispose of my old battery. Anyone know if the Glendale
landfill takes hazardous waste?

Went screwing around in the Agua Frea river bottom today.. lots of glass,
and junk down there... found me a nail and the tire went down... (don't
ya hate it when that happens) soft stuff and nice little mounds to climb
down there. just to dang small and no place to go but up and down the
area 1/2 a mile or so in that area... might be more lower down the river.
Monday morning Back to Discout Tire to get this one fixed.. and then
Tonka has her Extra foot again.

It probably will shrink. try getting a really powerful hose nozzle and some
carpet cleaner. This will work much better, and wont shrink your carpet. Or
take it to the local self wash and use the highg pressure sprayer there..

Subject: Coil spring spacer question
Has anyone installed the 1in coil spring spacer on an xj. I have a 3in spring lift and am looking for a little more room for my 31x10.5's. They are starting to rub on my inner liners and I don't want to chew up the tires on the body behind the liner. Especially in the rear. I plan on using a 1in lift block in the back and a degree shim.
I am just trying to figure out if I am going to have to get my driveshafts resized.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks in advance

Subject: Trail 42 Bartlett to Hourseshoe
I am accessable to all areas of the valley..
thanks

Troy,
There is another place down that way but you have to go south.

I understand sometimes our own lives are hectic enough, but take the time to RELAX. Be selfish for ten minutes and Enjoy these sites, if you are a member, send in a photo of your ride with any pertinent info you can think of, or just sign a guest book, I know if i'm interested in seeing your rig, or hearing what you have to say, others are too (maybe they're just not as vocal as me).
