View Full Version : "Little man syndrome"

Ok, so I was at work the other day and started talking about my Jeep to a couple people I work with (who don't understand, pun intended). Anyways, amidst our discussion i started talking about how my Jeep isn't big enough, and I need more lift, etc. Well then they got into how I have the "little man syndrome" because I have to drive a big Jeep and what not. So I began to try and explain the difference between big Jeeps, and lifted blinged out trucks. I explained how Jeeps get used and aren't just for looks, etc. My question is if any one else has run into this issue with people, and how do you break it down for them?

Yeah, forget 'em. Or take 'em wheeling and show them why you need a lift etc...but they wont get that either...so once again forget 'em.
Also, I have seen your Jeep and it is not too tall or all that big. It looks like a nicely built XJ that may see serious use, if it doesnt it sure could. Not like a Super Duty on 39's w/ Chrome everywhere and airbag suspension. It's a nice mix of on-road comfort and off-road capability.

Tell them they must have a huge d@*^ to drive that cute little car.:) That is normally what I tell people that say stuff like that. Take them wheeling that is the best was to change someones opinion on that. We build for function not looks. Like they say chrome wont get you home.

Well to me it sounds like you started the conversation to begin with. Right? Besides my Jeep i have another passion and that is trailrunning. I learned over the years that i only share experiences about either one with co-workers who are like minded.Have you ever tried explaining to someone that you ran a 50 mile trail run? Trailrunning and Jeeping have something in common. It's a (Jeep) (trailrunning) thing! They wouldn't understand.
I don't mean to sound trite, but maybe you should think about who you share your passion with first. It cuts down on the negative comments from knucklehead co-workers. This list is your support group. We understand

On my first date with my finacee (know I spelled that wrong), I arrived in a lifted 3/4 Avalanche.
With a smirk she asked me if I was compensating for something.
With a wink I told her she might find out if she was lucky.
This is one of many laughs we have had.
Now sounds like they were not trying to be funny.
Those that don't understand anything about me be it off roading, SCUBA diving, my choice in dogs, what I wear, or anything else If I give them the time of day here is my comment.
I do none of these things for you or to influence your opinion of me. It may be you that is conserned about the opinions of others.
The mantra of Navy Seals and Commerical Divers the world over. "Here's to use and those like us, the rest **** em."
Everyone has something they spend their time or money on that someone else dosen't get. That is OK, where they go wrong is being critical of what someone else gets joy from.
Maybe some of them if taken on a trail ride would get the bug, the rest see above.

I got a buddy into Jeeps who was all into the car thing. Now he is planning to get a JK in December...it wont be much of a beast at first, but we all know how the big bites...He already went from wanting a fancy sports car to wanting a Jeep because of a few trail rides with me.

e-mail them a clip of some rock crawlin jeeps, this should put a damper on their remarks.... that is unless they are clueless and are afraid to leave their comfort zone of 4 tires and a steering wheel.

Pictures are just not the same as seeing it in person. I know that hills I have taken are just not nearly as impressive in a photo.

LOL I'd just have told them they had "shelf butt" syndrome or something equally insulting as being accused of having little man syndrome. How obnoxious....Or I'd wait until they were talking about something important to them and throw in a quip or three :D

Nope. But if I did I'd blow them off. What I DO get is the 10" lifted chevys or Found On Road Dead's riding the crap out of my butt on the free way or local streets and then pass me full speed. They seem to think their making a point

Bring them on CK and tell them how easy its supposed to be... hopefully they don't loose their rear window, break a U joint, and then get a flat tire on the way down... :D

Well, I really just wanted to be certain I was not the only Jeeper that has to deal with that. I think it's funny when people don't even understand the quote, "It's a Jeep thing...you wouldn't understand". That really has to be one of the most true statements EVER! It is impossible for an "outsider" to get what we do. Hell, sometimes I don't even understand some of the things we do! :p

Just too add a little truth too the whole statement and "Jeep Thing".... I just want too say that the friend of mine that I brought on the CK run, had never been off road before..... A few times on the trail, he screamed, and he thought we were going over twice.....and he cursed me to the "mercy of GOD" twice.... BUT; all-in-all he said it was a GREAT time and he told me that after that trip he TOTALLY AGREES, that if "it's not a JEEP, .....IT'S JUST A LIABILITY".... true words spoken by a virgin Jeeper....passenger
