Subject: FR42 Breakage Follow up

Well I tore into the differential this morning. No doubt at all that
was were the problem was as soon as I put it on the jack stands. There
was something sticking out of the cover. When I pulled the cover, out
fell metal parts in addition to the oil.

As some of you know, I was running a Gleason Torsen in the front
Differential. The Gleason uses a worm gear setup to bias torque between
the axles. Around the outside of the differential is 3 groups of 2
gears each arranged so that they are parallel to each other and
tangential to the centerline of the axle (In non-engineer term they go
around the differential not in line with the axles.) I exploded the
passenger side worm on all three clusters. Guess you could say I did a
good job on this one.

The gears and everything look fine so it is just a matter of cleaning
everything up and putting in a new Differential. I had been considering
pulling the torsen and putting in a Detroit Locker so I guess the
decision has been made for me. The price that Offroad unlimited sells
the Detroit for with AZVJC discount makes it cheaper than a NoSpin by
the time I bought a Carrier for the NoSpin.

I need a new cover for the D30 so if anyone has one laying around that
they want to let go cheap let me know.

Thanks again for the help and support last night.

Um, guys, reread this. The discount is $10-$15, not the price.

They are still good diff guards

Archie,

Thanks for the response. The members of our Jeep club have ALL responded the same way and some of the members (me included) have written to the BBB and the Texas & Arizona AGs. You are correct this will never make it but along the same lines people will believe anything so I do not want to see fellow 4-wheel enthusiast get taken by this rip-off scheme.

Again, thanks for the response and have fun 4-wheeling.

This is Archie Brewer in Corpus Christi, Texas. I am a member of the San Antonio Jeep Exclusive and recieved the info on Superior from the club. Here is a copy of my e-mail response to the Superior Trail website along with a response I reciever from a friend in Blanding, Utah after letting him know about these guys.

Is this a joke or what!!!

As a 63 year old who has been going to the back country of Utah, Colo. and all the other Rocky Mtn. states for hiking and off-roading for the last 35 to 40 years yours is the worst plan I have ever see put forth. Do you realize that with states like Utah, Nev., ect. being 80% or higher goverment land, these people will need a license to step out thier back door. Where did you ever come up with an idea like this? Who gives you the authority to come up with something like this?

I live in South Texas and I'm ashamed that someone from Texas would come up with a plan such as this. Why don't you leave the people who live in the backcountry alone, they are the ones who decieded to live out there long ago when people like you were living in the cities wanted no part of this land. Leave these people alone. If you want to do some good and help someone go to the slums or ghettoes of Dallas which is right down the street from you and help out a starving little american boy or girl. That is where you can do some good, but leave the backcountry alone!!! They don't need another Greenpeace, SUWA, or Sierra Club telling them what to do. Just drop it.

Archie:

I shared the Superior Trail site with my sons. Their response was that it would never succeed in San Juan County. Folks here would totally ignore the "Maveriks". Unless there is a sworn law officer on the other side of the ticket they would pay no attention to them. I think most adults in San Juan County hold concealed weapon permits. The Superior Trail group would be well advised not to throw their weight around.

Toni

I think Superior needs to get a little educated on the ways of the west.

Thanks for the info on Superior!!

Nothing real fancy just too much testosterone and not enough brains.

I didn't bother to air down and tried to go back up a hill that you
normally drive down. Had one last spot to get over but was having
problems with it. Kept hitting at it trying to bump over it and heard a
pop that sounded like a ujoint. Got under and looked but could find
anything wrong with the ujoint. When ahead and backed down but was
still getting clanking like a ujoint. Finally put it in two wheel and
rotated the drive shaft and had about 90 degrees of backlash. Went the
rest of the way out in 2WD with Steve in front (F&R lockers) to strap me
when I had problems and Rick behind. We did have one spot that took a
double jeep strapping but other than that it was pretty normal stuff.
My rear Detroit (and somewhat driving like it was a rental) earned its
keep to keep strapping to a minimum.

Robert,

I have both front Dana 30 axles, with new u-joints (stock small size) that I
keep for spares, I also am doing the Rubicon in August. I also have a spare
front and rear driveshaft, tie rod assy, drag link assy. from a CJ-7, you
are welcome to borrow any of it for your trip. I wont need it back until the
end of July. Email me off line if you are interested.

I could have SWORN I saw these things somewhere for like $35. I would
consider looking around a little before you pay $50 for one... Have you
contacted troy and toys by troy? I think thats where I saw them cheaper.
And since David W. ran into his wife the other night, I think Troy might be
more than happy to increase his clientele DB :)

Would someone like ME to call him on monday and get prices on a group buy?
I know him, and might be able to twist his arm a little!

Good luck!

Hi Gang,

As of noon today we have two new certified divers... AZVJCer Robert McNeeley
and his girlfriend Paula.
Robert and Paula spent this weekend getting certified with me at Lake
Pleasant. Visibility was a good 30 feet (the best I've ever seen it at a
local lake).

Now... I'll bet you're wondering how this is on topic... <grin>

When I took their certification card pictures, I put them in front of
Robert's yellow TJ... so when they get their certification cards back from
PADI, they will have their Jeep in the background!

Subject: Windshield washer fluid on hood???

Recently I have noticed windshield washer fluid on my TJ coming out of the nozzles located on the hood. It runs off the hood and leaves a nasty mess. I assume this is caused by thermal expansion of the fluid. I would think the fluid would back up through the pump into the reservoir. Anybody else out there experience this problem? Any known fixes?

George,

Are you pushing any buttons on the windshield wiper stalk just before the washer fluid comes out and makes a mess?
