David C

I just got a text message from Glen Reams that said, "Squeeze rock, send help! No service." I replied to him that I am leaving a notice here and that I am on my way. My cell is 602-319-9565. I don't know what has happened but I am leaving in 10 minutes to go out there. Call me if you can go.

Just talked to Glen's friend out there.

Guess he was going up a hill and came back down and got stuck in some sand.
Nothing major, just needs a tug out it sounds like.
David is almost there, and I guess Digger is on her way out as well, he is on the road/wash to squeeze(the friend didn't know exactly where)
I think David should be able to get him out, if I get any more calls, I will post up.

LOL He is just a baby. When I was his age, we took a chevy truck out to the Bushnell Tanks and crossed the water too fast.....(i know, i know - water and i don't get along but I wasn't driving either time).....got stuck out there overnight. Glen is a lot luckier than I was....having a whole group of people that know what they are doing to come help....

Okay first things first... my girlfriend Glenda is home safe and sound... heshe has a little sun burn but heshe's fine... :) phockerz!!!!

Squeeze has changed ALOT in the last month; heading n. through sycamore is likely going to be a no go for a while... the area of the trail that is washed out just befor squeeze rock is deep and just really loose sand right now... I didn't try real hard because I didn't want to get myself stuck; but the hit that I gave it, to get through the washed out section was unsucsessfull; its just loose and steep... I just started digging into the sand immediately and lost my momentum...

We got Glenn out on the first pull; daisy chained David and myself to him snatched him up and out...

If you go in go slow the first time; the wash is completely different; heading in there is a large hole on the left in the wash where with just a very small track on the right, then another area on the right that has a bypass to the left... if you're used to blasting it; you'll likely get your arse tangled up as its a completely different trail now.

Dave & Nancy thanks for the help... Dave; I can still hear the Mexican Hat Dance!!!

Oh and just for the record... there aint no way a wrecker was getting back there; the one bypass is barely wide enough for a wrangler... If he had gone back; we'd be pulling him out...

Steve
08-24-2007, 04:42 PM
Thanks for the update. So what happened to get the chopper ride for him? Why were the LEOs involved?:D Loose ends;) :D

08-24-2007, 04:58 PM
Glenn can clarify but my understanding is this: he sent his friend off to the top of a hill with a cell phone to call one of us... his buddy couldn't get through to anyone and called 911... so the LEO's mounted the whirly bird and went a lookin... Glenn can probably fill it in better than that...

Okay first of all big thanks too DIGGER JUNKIE AND DAVID C
Didnt plan on going out alone this morning. Went too meet junkie didnt know if he got my message on where to meet so when i saw he wasnt at the meeting spot i went too the trail head where he usually is. came up too the turn right before squeeze roc and well there is a little hill climb there now so i went up the little hill got denied, backed up and the sand was super soft and i just started sinking and i started sliding toward the water. Well when i put it in reverse too get straightened out i went too hit my brakes and well i didnt have any! so she slid back into the water/sand and after 3 hours of sitting there waiting on junkie. I decided too have my buddy climb to the top of the mountain and call someone. Well he didnt get phone service so he called 911

Because he starting getting sick up there and ran out of water the sent out the chopper picked him up then a hour later came and got me. I told them i didnt want in they said i had no other option. Well once we landed the sherrif came up to me and was being a real jack ***** too me out of the blue saying i was on private property and off the trail and i told him he didnt even know where i was. Well then he told me if i ever get caught back on Tonto national forest again ill be arrested and that its people like me that is causing the forest too get shut down. Well then i lost it and told him i put in more community service hours in threw out the tonto forest then his dumb ***** could count. Well he didnt like that told me my jeep was getting towed out and impounded and if i was cought out there trying too get it out i would be arrested

To be honest, I am not sure of that side of things. I dont get to site people so I dont know the exact rules.

If I were, you what I would hope for, as that at the end of the day, they realize you are just kids and did somethign stupid. Then did a really serious thing by calling 911. Hopefully, they will call it a day as saying no harm no foul and let it go. But as you stated earlier, if you gave them a lot of atitude while the deputy was trying to give you the "you were stupid dont do it again, what were you thinking, do know what you did?" lecture. Who knows.

I wasnt there to see it, but if you didnt sign anything, then you are not getting ticket (most likley not). And by that, chances are, you wont get billed for the ride either.... unless you really irked them at the station.

Just make sure you are more reponsible and go only where it is legal to go and only when you are with another person from now on Glen. Damn, all of you talking about Glen, I'd be on to his buddy...calling 911??? wth? Never been stuck before? Panicking?

Step 1: Don't call 911
Step 2: think of all options and try them
Step 3: when you run out of options THEN call 911 as to not waste their time when they possibly could be rescuing someone else in need.

But I wasn't there so guess I don't know:cool:

911 is his only signal out. I am not a technical whiz but if I understand correctly the cell phone providers are supposed to set all towers to receive 911 regardless of coverage... Glenn, you did not sign anything so I agree with hunter, I think you are good. They probably copied your info for the report. I am still unsure about the helo ride though. Glad you got it out and you guys are okay. I also agree with what someone said above, you shoudl get your own thread!

I just looked at the pictures of your jeep stuck in the water surrounded by sand. I think they look a lot like some that I have, perhaps before you actually joined AVJC? :D Think "first cove"? At least you got to ride in the helicopter! Ive gotten lifted up a bunch of time's on the end of a tether during swift water rescue training but have never gotten to sit inside. You probably don't get the fine dirt sticking all over your body when your dry and inside. Landing sucks big time when your wet and on the end of a rope!!!!

Well, I finally got internet access! I've been dying to read this thread all evening! Amusing, as I expected. First, thanks to everyone who called and offered more help and to those who relayed info. Thanks, Digger for joining the effort. It looks like the story has been told, but I will add that according to my official Tonto Forest map which I bought at the office where I got my Bulldog Permit, Squeeze Rock lies on Tonto National Forest land. It is not private property, nor State Trust or BLM. I believe the forest road # is 1846, but I don't have the map in front of me at the moment. The spot where Glen got stuck is the exact spot I posted a picture of last week when I was out there with Fireball. http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=24808
I believe my assessment was "impassable." That still stands. Maybe after it dries out, maybe it will be doable, but not at the moment. I'm glad Glen and his friend are ok, and I'm really glad his rig came right up out of that sinkhole, cause it was HOT out there. Digger did exactly as her screen name says, she got right under there with her camp shovel and dug around the front axle and put a chain around it and hooked to my strap. I was the turnbuckle in the train as Yjunk hooked to my front end and on the count of 3, we all powered right up out of the hole. Good teamwork all around! I'm glad I was able to be of assistance today. This is a great group of people here!! :)

When I first read this thread I was about to call Glenn a dumb arse punk... but then (it sounds like as you) I realized I did similiar idiotic things when I was his age... Glenn, when you get a bit older you'll look back at others and say the same stuff so don't take offense... I guess though once I did get caught I was a copy kiss arse and never gave them a hard time. These guys are just doing their job. Let them give you the "you're a dumb arse punk" lecture and take it as a lesson learned. oh, yeah, EVERYONE, if your wheeling buddy doesn't show, DON'T wheel alone. Especially in the summer months.... *especially* in an XJ... you're just bound to get stuck in one of them grocery getters. :D

He showed he just got tired of waiting... actually just figured Glenn was probably still sleepig; when I was 17, 7AM didn't even exist on my clock...

Well turns out i wasnt the only person that got stuck there yesterday either. Just talked to a buddy i work with and he said when he drove back there last night there were a total of 3 other trucks stuck in the same spot as i was. 1 2wd s-10 1 4wd chevy 1500 got stuck trying to pull him out and then a 4wd fronter thought he was a bad azz and tryed to go and show off as they were both stuck. Then slid down and into the s-10..If a jeep locked front and rear on 37's a 4.88 gears cant make it then im guessing its going to keep on getting people stuck from now on....

Hmmm, I'm thinking I should just set up shop out there - $50 to tow a truck out - $100 to tow a truck out that tried to tow a truck out - $500 to tow any truck that attempts while the 1st two are still stuck. Jeeps are FREE (but I know any other Jeeps would just park next to me and break out some popcorn :D). I need a partner though, someone shrewd and greedy......anyone?...anyone?...Bueller?:D

Because we were ALL 17 year olds at one time and ALL of us did the SAME dumb stuff :D It isn't a newsflash - once one hears your age; they can easily think back to dumb stuff they did at that age and then we understand...but wish you'd learn faster than we did! :D

When I was your age, we used to drive out to saguaro lake at 2AM in october wearing swimsuits and chucks; hiked the trail to the cliffs and we'd go cliff jumping - knowing there were rocks below and we couldn't see em....I got stuck out at bushnell tanks after doing a water crossing  (i wasn't even driving) overnight...We used to play tag on public streets with our cars using raw biscuit dough for tagging people....Done a lot dumber things I won't even mention - but just be grateful that this time you got a ride in a chopper - many of us weren't that lucky and got driven home in the backseat of a squad car to our parents after doing dumb stuff.

the point is - you are going to make mistakes and do dumb crap. It is your age and its normal - just be ahead of the curve and learn from this.

Wheeling alone isnt really the crime here. Most of the time I wheel alone. Trick is being prepared for it. Haveing your hi-lift jack, some good recoverygear, a full size shovel, water, etc. Oh, and NOT TAKING REALLY STUPID SICK LINES ON WILD OBSTACLES THAT ARE FILLED WITH SAND AND WATER well also help to make sure you come home safe and sound.

Lord knows I have gotten myself into some jams. Getting hi-cenetered or caught in a rut. But got to have the gear with you.

You're right, but unless you have a HAM or Sat phone (and GPS) radio or are an experienced extreme weather hiker it's still not a good idea. Vehicles break down in ways that you can't improvise a fix even with the best of tools/spares... in that case, you have to get the word out and unfortunately in AZ most of the places we wheel have poor mobile phone service. In this situation an experienced ham operator should be able to get the word out and use the GPS to give someone their pin point location.... did I mention the experienced extreme weather hiker part? A person can't last very long in these extreme conditions... and worse yet, a person that's in a panic will last even less in these conditions.

me and a buddy ran out there and got to that spot where you got stuck. i thought you had 35's? its just soft sand, did you forget the 4x4 lever needs to be shifted?

i also saw where junky tried to get up and we went up that and i was supprised that it was easy, it looked unpassable but the heep just hopped right up it. my buddy got into the skinny pedal too hard and blew his rear drive shaft so we didn't get to run the trail, but the parts that i saw on the walk up looked a little harder because all the filler sand seems to be washed out. i don't know if the mud hole is full but by the looks of everything else it must be. we're running out there tomorrow a.m.

All those tadpoles are now tiny little frogs. And yes they should stay in their own puddles - I cleaned a whole bunch off of his bumper and put them back, but there must have been some nooks and crannies we missed. These frogs were seriously small - 4 or 5 could have fit on my thumbnail! But they sure had big, scary-looking fangs!:D
