View Full Version : Soldiers being spit on in Flagstaff

So there was an officer downrange yesterday from the Flagstaff area stating they are experiencing a problem with the civilian population spitting on soldiers. I understand they may not agree with what the United States is doing and the wars we are fighting as they have freedom of their own opinions....but...US SOLDIERS DO NOT PICK THE WARS, THEY JUST FOLLOW ORDERS AND FIGHT THEM. I cannot express how disgusted I am to hear this, nor can I express just how physically hurt someone up there will be if they spit on me. This is just uncalled for.

That really pisses me off  who the hell do those people think they are spitting on people who fight for the freedoms they take for granted!! Weather or not I agree with the war or any war...these folks are just doing what they are told. I'd be willing to bet those spitting never served in the armed forces!

This wouldnt surprise me. 96-98, I spent alot of time in Flagstaff, went in NAU for 3 sesmesters. While small, there was a strong crowd of the tree-hugger-peace-demanding-hippy extremests. I have some freinds that comaperd it to Seattle.
Breaks my heart. The ultimate case of "biting the hand that feeds you."

Near campus area. Soldiers just in uniform in the town walking down the street...just being soldiers...doing soldierly things - like breathing, walking, talking about stuff, figuring out where to go eat....That is the extent of my information.
I am sure it would have made the news if the soldiers beat the "spitters" up, but since it didn't; I assume they shook it off...I don't have that restraint....Patchouli wearing lice having dope smoking communist hippies (no confirmation on if it was hippies but I can assume that much). Move to France. Or Mexico...
I had a friend have coffee thrown at them a while back up there, but spitting is unbelievable...I got a buddy up there and will do some poking around.

Had that happen to me in Boston airport back in 71. I was young then and didn't know how to react. After that I decided it would never happen to me again, unanswered, or any of my brothers and sisters in arms when I was around. I have all the respect in the world for freedom, but someone is going to get there butt stomped if it happens around me. I have no use for cowards that do not have the balls to fight for there freedom or want to abuse those that do. Sorry I get a little heated over these things so I'll get off my soapbox for now.

I get heated also. I stewed over this for 24 hours before posting up about it so that I could say it and have more than 5 words in a row that didn't get edited down to ***'s.......Bastages...My aunt had a good solution for hippies back in the 70's....her and her brother would tackle them and cut all their hair off during anti war protests...... :D

i might get bashed for this, but I have no problem with people protesting against a war, this is America, if you want to march b/c you don't support what our government is doing that is fine. I do however find a problem with any backlash towards the military, they didn't make the decision to go to war, they are following the orders that they were told they would have to follow when they joined...however it does go both ways...
if you are going to terrorize people protesting, they might backlash against you...
if you are going to terrorize the military, they might backlash against you...
the point is the people who were elected make these decisions, we all have a right to either support the decisions of the elected or not, but not supporting the decisions of the elected, does not mean that you take out your anger and frustration towards your elected officials on members of the US Military...get out and vote instead

I do not have a problem with anti-war protests which are peaceful (the legal kind). I wear the uniform so you can do that. I support your right to say whatever you want and do whatever you want and even act like a piece of trash and the scum of the earth and burn the flag. Doesn't mean I agree with your opinion and am not enflamed when I see the flag I defend burned by someone. Doesn't mean I don't have to restrain myself from kicking their front teeth in. What I posted above about my aunt is just something not right that she did which I found humorous (you'd have to know my aunt - she's barely 5 feet tall and a spitfire redhead).
I do however find a problem with any backlash towards the military, they didn't make the decision to go to war, they are following the orders that they were told they would have to follow when they joined...however it does go both ways...

I know that in this case, the soldiers had not terrorized the protesters. I have had mill avenue protesters shout at me and make threatening comments as I minded my own business in uniform before. Spitting on another human being is not right, and even though you say "terrorize the military" which is in a way accurate; you are dehumanizing the soldier. It is an isolated soldier who you don't know his/her political beliefs or anything - why would you terrorize them. It is like if I went and started attacking people because they worked at KB homes.
Here I go again. As a Bar owner and past bouncer never mind thes people are serving our country for our freedoms! there are a few things that a person will NOT stand for they are: someone hitting a female and the number one thing that is as low as low can get you do not spit on any one! if this happens usually the person who spits gets a severve a** whooppin. If these service persons refrained them selves they are better persons than most of the rest of the population. The so called spitters in my mind are as much of a coward as you can get. Shame on them they are dirt in my mind! yes these service members are fighting for the freedoms so that we may all have and be proud of our own opinion but this has gone way to far. like I say Shame on these spitters they should be taken out back and given a good A** whoopin!

Flame me if you must but here is my 2 cents...
I gave 8 years of my life so you can say what you want. As ShannonMac stated, it should be done constructively. If you don't like something then speak about it, vote about it, etc... but IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO SPIT ON A US SOLDIER!
These are hippie college kids that find associations in groups, they think they are part of some noble cause.....
I have done my time. Back in the day I would stand and protect you while you burned the flag or protested against any war, all the while steaming inside my head wanting to STOMP YOUR GUTS OUT!. I will still do that today, freedom of speech... Back then I would have bit my tongue while you spit on me in my uniform. It wouldn't have passed the TV test for me to break some hippie liberal sh!tbags neck.
BUT NOW?!?!?!? I am not in uniform and if I see you(misguided hippies) spit on anyone much less a soldier... They are gonna have to pry my *** off of you as a pund your dirty, dreadlock wearing, pot smelling, get a damn job face THROUGH the pavement. I will punch your face sooo hard and soooo fast it will burst into flames!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeezy-Creezy, I didn't think anything would make me more mad than illegal immigration and affirmative action but.....
I let a guy live after spitting in my face at the "lighthouse" out by Luke after he was harrassing a girl. The bartender did not want to call the cops cause this drunk was one of his "civy regulars." He didn't make it out in the parking lot though. Some thoughtful airmen made sure he got to his car okay..*whump, whump!!*:D:D:D

I also dealt with the veggie attack in 69 after my first tour, at san fran internation aero port, got 90 days for a young just 23 hours out of country marine beating the snot out of three fellas, ( a few of them Berkley folks got outta hand) ( Oh yeah married a Berkley grad)so,
I would have to say the spitting or intent is the work of some very uniformed citizens, and will make it a mission to locate these citizens and educate them in proper etiquet towards our people in uniform.
I do a considerable amount of business in flag and know many busines peole in the old town, and will continue to look into this and find the establishment where this happened and will most definetly have a conversation with said owner if this is true, he or she could possibly help this not to occur again if it is as stated, any additional info would be appreciated.

Yeah, I'd have to take it a step farther and include anyone uniform or not. Spitting on something is worse than trying to screw your girlfriend of fawk with your jeep. It's an offense punishable by blood. Guy did that to me one day in a bar and you could see my finger prints on his throat when I finally let go. Of course I was a bouncer and I was also in college so my temper was a little off back then. :D
If this is said group that Ademster referred to driving by with a cup of pee would be a fun idea. :D

Nope.. well, once when I was like 4 years old. In the apartments I lived in a family below us was from Seattle. The guy and I had worked together for a summer and we would chat about the "tree huggers extremists" on occasion. I caught the wrath a few times while down town because of my Land Cruiser. Some of the them really dont like SUV's all covered in mud... who knew:rolleyes:.
I was also really into the mountain bike scene and I knew I was one of the few odd men out. Being that I was a gun loving, 4x4in' dude. But, still I hung with a group that seemed to over look the fact while I sat around and listened to them go on and on about how were wasteing the world and blah blah blah. Hence, from this group, I met a few people who were also from Seattle and they explained "how much it was like home". I dont think they were talking about the climate as in weather, but more in the political climate. You could be very anti goverment, anti law, anti everything, and had a huge support group. A couple of these guys were so warped, they would talk about doing the "nails in the trees" to mess with lumberjacks.

If Im not mistaken this is actually a crime,I believe it is considered assault. While I agree with the idea of kickin the spit outa these individuals I hope none of the people in uniform sink to that level cuz we all know thats what they want our freedom keepers to do.However I for one dont have a uniform and would not be subjected to the stinkeye the the folks in uniform may be subjected to. Im seeing a simple assault charge on me dropped in exchange for me not fileing a charge of my own against the spitter and even if its not dropped whats it gonna be 200 bucks in fines 6mos probation well worth it to me not that ive ever been charged with it before Im just guessing....anybody wanna go to Flag

I dont want to sound rude but I dont think you have a clue. There are people in every city who will sit on their soap boxes and preach peace. Also there is a difference between peace freaks and liberals against war but thats for another day... Fact is some of the most country people I know lived in Washington and most of the friends I knew in High school either went off to college for some professional job to do with law or to the army.
The folks that begin to relate seattle/washington state with peace preaching hippies are the same sad sort that will have a northern lumberman sailor spitting beachnut in their eye and stomping at the bit.

I was about 8 or 9 so somewhere between 1967 and 1969.
Think it had been about 2 years since I had seen my father.
He is where I got the quote at the end of each of my messages. "I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it". The author of this is lost in history but it is one of his and my favorite quotes. Another in my top two is not printable here and discussed "hearts and minds". He truely and strong believes this, and respects the blood spilled on both sides of history so that we enjoy this right to free speech. So what happened on that day in the late sixties must have been more than words but I am not sure.
At this time he was a USMC Capt. just off the boat from Viet Nam. The boat had taken over a month. They took this slow ride home instead of a plane by order of the Marine Corps not due to cost, but to have the time to brief them on what to expect when they got home and decompress. Things like protestors and, no a short skirt is just the syle now you wife has not become a whore.
He started as a pirvate and was in Korea and places he can't tell me about before and after Viet Nam. Was asked to help write the book on how to be a drill instructor after doing so at Paris Island. This is a man a full 6" shorter than me at 5'6" that other Marines feared. He has been mildly disappointed that his service record reflects "just under" 3000 kills by him or his troops.
I learned of his reputation among other Marines when in highschool I was playing basketball and a large young Marine tried to pick a fight with me. The Marine that ran the gym separated us. Robert Taylor was the gym boss's name. He and my father had served together in many places. He was not a Gunny at the time but I remember him as Gunny Taylor. He was about the biggest, most intimadating, most fit Marine I had ever seen. At one time he was the head PT instructor or the entire Marine corps, a stack of meat with no fat that looked like a body builder but in his late 40's ran 20 miles each morning. He looked the young Marine in the eye and said, "I am going to let this boy kick your a**, and if he can't kick your a** I will, and if I can't kick your a**, I know his father can. The young man's face was angry when he had said I was going to kick his a**, scared when Gunny said he would do it, and looked puzzed when my father was mentioned. Gunny told him who my father was, the Marine turned and left without a word.
So my first sight of my father in a couple of years is my mom tapping him on the shoulder asking him to put the long haired man down. The long haired had a blue turning purple face with feet about a foot off the ground with one of my dad's hands around his throat and the other on his own hip. Dad was using some colorful speech but was calm.
That long haired man owes his life to my mother and the head shrinkers who set up these longer trips home for in country Marines.
His friends took the lad away and to my knowledge this location saw no more protestors.
I don't know what the lad said or did but this thread reminded me of that time in my life.
My father Capt. USMC Retired is still upright and taking nurishment and reasonably happy to have not taken a life since 1972. Amoung other things he teachs high school, similar to being a drill instrutor and almost as fun according to him. I don't think I will send him information about Flagstaff. I will however send him the story about the Marine that walked away.
There is another story about how the mugging of Marines and Sailors by gang members stopped in San Diego, but that is for another time.
Some day those in Flag will cross the wrong person. I can think of no one I would spit on. And to spit on someone one in uniform is no different that punching someone because they are a "hippie".
These people are not peace loving hippies, they are just cowards and bullies. Their actions do nothing for the ideas they hide behind. They just enjoy belittleing others to make themselves feel better. This type of behaviour in the fever of the 60's while not understandable might be forgivable in my eyes. Now not so much.
It's OK to have an opinion about the war, not OK to abuse the troops.

I emailed dad the part about the gym. He did not remeber me telling him that. I guess I had never told him that story. He would not have forgotten it as he remembers things about he and I and Gunny Taylor in great detail. I think Gunny Taylor still owns a gym in Phoenix.
He wrote me back that he got a laugh out of it and asked if he was really that tough an mean. Maybe I should have used the word respected instead of feared.:D

P.S. I would also give you wrath for driving a land crusier ;)
I was born and raised in Seattle... lived there for 17 yrs... washington is a very liberal state. I miss the puedget sound but it is VERY liberal. Kindof like Minneapolis.
lol... now lets hear from the minnesota folks. :D

Back in the day we'd survive Vietnam and be proud to wear the uniform. Wear it to church with the family on Sunday. Some fur ball hippie would spit on the uniform and I had to clean his clock for him. Back then the police, vets themselves, would take three attempts to load the hippie in the back. They remembered on the third attempt to open the door. Mel Gibson did a movie where he was a teacher with half his faced burned. He was helping some kid with his studies. I remember the scene where the kid came home and his mom was on the couch with this hippie with his dandyloin hair cut and tie died shirt. My son could hear me cussing that hippie sob out loud in the theater.
Now days you can call the police on the spitters for getting their body fluids on you and endangering your health. They more than likely have aids or hepititus.
