OK.....too many people, in my opinion, are getting wound up about
this....let's slow down a bit an examine the issue.

#1....yes, I have put gear lube and ATF in my oil collection container
and taken it to the local auto parts store (both AutoZone and PepBoys).
I've never put antifreeze in it and tried to pass it off as oil. I
always assumed recycled oil was recycled oil.

#2....I've been doing this for well over 5 years.

#3....Neither of the two stores I frequent have ANY signs posted stating
that you can not recycle ATF, gear lube, etc.

#4....Neither of the two stores have ever ASKED ME if I had something
other than used motor oil in the recycle container.

Excuse the crap out of me for not being able to read their minds.
Excuse me for not telling them how to run their business. Excuse me for
not telling them they should put up a sign so that all could be properly
informed of the rules that Mr. Counterman probably doesn't even have a
clue about. Excuse me for trying to be an environmentalist and not
simply dumping the oil on the side of the road during my last 4 wheelin'
trip.

Uh, yeah, oil is oil. And dog crap is, indeed, dog crap. Gear
oil, however, is not motor oil, which is what places like Checker,
Auto Zone, and others, will sell (actually, PAY, to have disposed of
properly, and often recycled...) to provide a service to do-it-
yourselfers who otherwise would have no place to lawfully dispense
their used petroleum products. Contaminating the vats of used motor
oil with gear oil, ATF, antifreeze, brake fluid, and Aunt Rosie's
three day old menudo is NOT something that will get you a pat on the
back from the management of these auto parts stores.
Yeah, he should have just told them that it was from an oil
change... (not impressed). I could be way off here. Take it with a
grain of salt, or, if you prefer, I'll tell you it's just sugar.

it will be a time for people with all kinds of jeep and others to go out and have fun you do not need a lift or lockers for this run it is for all kinds of jeeps stock or built. i will update this post more in the future just trying to find out how many are planning on going.

Broken Arrow is a fun trail with great scenery. A stock Jeep can make this run and there are areas for those with built rigs to test and flex their suspension, such as the Crack. Pay attention to the signs, as part of this trail is a one-way loop.

A lot of Pink Jeeps share the trail so please put your best foot forward while representing our club. For many of the passengers on those Jeep tours, you are the first real off-roader they have ever seen (gosh, that is a scarey thought!) You will find that most of the pink drivers are pretty cool!

The Devil's Staircase is fun, and some members have been known to run it bottom-to-top. If you do, please post a look-out at the top to prevent someone from coming down while you are trying to go up.

It usually takes a couple of hours to make the loop, which allows ample time for pictures and a stop at Chicken Point for lunch (you did bring lunch, didn't you?)

I just called AutoZone and they did confirm that gear oil is NOT

So where do we take this NON-motor oil?

We need a "Where's Rick Now" page on the AZVJC website. I think it would also cut down on the e-mails about where's Rick and what is his phone #.

Just ran across this web site. It appears to be like an Army Surplus store. One item that caught my eye was they have the "Swiss Metal Fuel Cans" for $12.97 ea. and nozzles for $7.97 ea. I remember a thread a few weeks ago about fuel cans, and how expensive they were. I have no idea about the quality or customer service of this store, but thought I'd pass it on for anyone who wants it:

They also have tool bags, camping equipment, ammo boxes and ammo, knives, gun stuff, and a lot of nifty little bags etc.

Stu,

That was pretty funny! I don't think I have ever read a post
where you seemed to lose your composure. It almost sounded a little
too defensive... I am laughing.

And, oh, yeah... It was nice to finally meet you in person last

Wow. Looks like my question created some "interesting" responses. I stopped changing my own oil several years ago and had never taken used motor oil in for recycling. When I decided to go to synthetic oil I also decided to change my own oil to avoid the high prices at the usual places. Since I had never recycled oil, I asked the folks at Autozone and Pep Boys what I needed to do. I included trans and diff oil because I LOVE working on my Jeep and wanted to do as much maintenance as possible for myself. That is how I learned that the above two places don't take diff oil. I guess I will check with some other places until I find someone who will take it.

Well, we finally started the hood vent project on the ZJ. I posted one
picture and will post the rest of the work later. We need some dzus
fasteners to complete the job. The hole is big enough to mount a 6"
slimline fan. I am thinking of doing that. Thanks Len and Scott for the
encouragement. :-)

I would check some of the street truck sites for ideas. Also, research
braking systems. I found a great site for Steve (he converted his Diesel
Scout from power brakes to a hydroboost). I think it was an ASE site. I
didn't bookmark it. Sorry!
