I'm wondering why one of these modern day, fast talkin, wheeler dealer fabricator's haven't created a prefabricated bracket to hold an after market 3rd tail light? There's a large population of us who have installed a swing out tire, that won't accommodate the factory light.
Where is your ingenuity? Make a million off of this idea, and I get a free one, or ten.
Just hurry, I need one.

or ten.

A lot of people where I live put the light in a center cap like the write-up on Stu's site
http://www.stu-offroad.com/electrical/3rdbrake/led-1.htm

I rather like having it flush mounted in the carrier itself. It wasn't installed in this pic... but you can see the hole it goes in.

beh...no need for it....I run LED's....they are way more noticeable than a 3rd inc. bulbed light

I took my stock one and cut the bottom mounting area off and the mounted it to the same bracket I used to mount the air tank, then extended the wires out. works great.

Most of us have a smattering of the ingenuity and fab. skills necessary for this project, or we blow it off like AZG23. Mine is actually mounted in a rubber grommet in the end of the tire carrier. It does not come off when I pull the tire.:

Wayne, I like that it is very tactful and out of the way. Though I do not run a third brake light I would go with something like that if I did. Mine didn't have the third brake light when I bought it stock 5.5yrs ago and so I figured why bother. :D

Hey Wayne
Got a pic of how you mounted it? Was thinking about the same setup on mine.

It's mounted in the end of the tire mount. When I bought the rear bumper/tire carrier from Toys by Troy, I got a chrome cap with the light mounted in the top with a rubber grommet. I think the grommet diameter was 2.5". I used a hole saw to drill out the end of the carrier, scrapped the chrome cap, and fished the wire up through the carrier. I will get a pic. of it tomorrow. :)

Thanks Wayne.. That was what I was thinking about doing. It was just that the tube that holds the tire mount on my TBT carrier is rectangle and smaller diameter than the center hole on the wheel. Just wanted to see how it worked.

The rubber grommet is marked Truck-lite Model 30, and it's outside diameter is 2 1/8" I just glued it on and drilled a 1 1/4" hole in the end of the carrier arm.

I ran the wire up outside the tubing until I got to the square tubing, then drilled into it from underneath:

Hard to see here, because it is taped down, but I also put a little rubber grommet in where it comes up through the square tubing. Check with Troy about where he gets these lights, the big rubber grommet makes this job easy.

I finally found a pic with my light installed, though it's not a closeup. The light is from Jeeperman and matches the hole in the carrier... but any carrier could be used, just drill a small hole and the light comes with the proper grommet.

Thanks Wayne.
I hadn't thought about gluing the grommet on. Was just looking at drilling a full size hole for it to mount in.

I looked on the Jeeperman website and couldn't find any tail lights. Anybody know where you can get this light and grommet?

My rocker sliders are from Toys by Troy, I like his stuff and got most of my original upgrades from him, before he did some stupid stuff on a trail and got bad mouthed on this forum..... Still makes good bumpers and sliders, and since I wasn't there when he did this "stupid stuff" I have no opinion on his trail ethics. :)

My original intention was to put it underneath but everywhere it would fit looked like it would get hurt, I don't have room inside as I carry people, dogs and tools!!!

Which light are you talking about Wayne? If it's the 2.5" or 4" light and grommet they are available at most NAPA's and almost any truckstop.

Thanks, that's a slick looking light, and a 3/4" hole would fit inside the square tube on most carriers too.

I like it because it's completely flush.

Is that the same light they sell at Pep Boys? I used some that looked like that to redo a dash on my old Jeepster.

I mounted my stock JK light in a similar way (no air tank though). It's worked well so far. See old post:
