To you 4x4 veterans who have actually used recovery straps, if you were to buy a new one, what brand (Keeper, ProComp, etc.) and size would you buy. If price would be an issue, please mention it in your answer.
Thanks

I have the cheaper yellow ones from 4 Wheel Parts and I prefer the 3" x 30'. The expensive ones are nice but I cut one pulling a car at last years Table Mesa cleanup, seems they don't hold up better than the cheaper ones and it hurts less when you screw up. $35

2WD YJ Guy got some good time on it this weekend. :D
Mine is a yellow one from wheelers, I think it's 3x20. I also have a cheaper 2x30 also and both have served me well. Just remember you don't want one with metal hooks on it.

I have a 3" x 30 also from 4 Wheelers.
The price of the strap, as said before, only matters when you tear it up :D
Get good solid hooks for the bumpers, preferably frame mounted.
I have a huge heavy duty D ring for attaching 2 straps together. Sometimes if you tie them together they never come apart again.
***** Note **** If you use a D ring to attach 2 straps make sure you put a heavy blanket on each side of the D ring in case something fails. Good idea to have the hood open when doing that too to protect the driver from flying parts. You may be getting the idea that this is a personal preference and very dangerous :)

They all were great. I think i have been on the end of everybodys strap at one time or another. Plus who needs to buy one when everyone is willing to break theirs out to put you on their strap of shame.;)

Then you are not wheeling hard enough.

Ok I might sound retarded by asking this but why dont you guys use chains instead of straps? Is it cause the straps let it flex more and dont pull like a chain does?? Chains break easlier??

See in the steel business, we use this little device called "the dog" its a spring loaded deal that has these 2 plates with metal teeth on them. You pull the pin which allows the teeth move back and forth. We use this device to pull 40ft beams out of the stack. Basically you would put it on the beam you want, pull the chain so the teeth set against the beam. Take a heavy duty chain and hook it on the "Dog" then hook it up to the forklift fork with a clevis pin. Back up the forklift and it pulls the heavy 40ft beam right out of the stack, never had a chain break before so just curious why you guys use a strap over a chain.

straps are strong and much lighter to pack up in the limited amount of space we have. Chains would do the job, just not as practical. imho

Ive gotta 2x30 from DR.....(before I knew :D) and a strap with the dreaded hooks, to be able to tow a Jeep/vehicle home if needed...so it doesnt tear up my recovery strap.
Chains normally dont stretch to aid in a snatch recovery...and I think a strap is a little safer.

When pulling a rig from the mud or off a rock, you use the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle to jerk the vehicle out. The stretch of the strap allows this without damaging things. Also a heavy chain flailing around as the tension is taking up could be very dangerous due to the shear mass of the chain. If we were pulling a 1 ton rig with a 4 ton vehicle a chain would work great. Since we are pulling a 1 ton rig with a 1 ton rig that doesn't have near the coefficient of friction as the stuck rig, chains don't work very well. ( stuck rig wants to move a lot less than the not stuck rig :D )

X3....thanks for the info folks...I need to pick up a strap too....and figure out recovery points on my stock JK....a strap may have been benficial when I got high centered on the CK run, since I still have a stock bumper...and since Justin won't make one for a JK ;) (:eek:gasp!)...did I say JK? LOL!

Chains are heavy and tend to scratch dent surfaces and break things easier. I like the straps also for the reasons stated by Fire Ball. We aren't pulling massive rigs out so the straps work great for what we need. :D

IMHO if you carry a chain strong enough not to break....long enough to do the job (like 30'), you won't like the weight penalty. If you go with a chain light enough to be easily carried, it may well break....a jacket or an old rug laying on it might well not stop the recoil. Once any of the links are deformed, the chain is no longer reliable. I prefer the strap for weight, safety factors as mentioned, elasticity and ease of replacement (cost and availability). I learned these lessons from sailing and have used the strap very little due to my mouselike approach to wheeling.:D

We carry the Fiberlink and Warn brand for straps. I carry a Fiberlink in my Willys and it works great(on friends:)) and the pricing is affordable. Oh and I stock bunches!!! :D
Edit:
Always carry a few d-rings too. They are livesavers for recoveries and save on getting a strap either knotted or bound up. I carry the one with the Warn receiver shackle kit and a spare. And they are good hammers (finger smashers) even when you have one in your tool box:).

I carry strap, and chains. I have used the strap several times, but have only used the chain once. I have the hi lift jack come along setup. It requires chain to work. Before I got winch it was my poor boy winch. I used it once and it paid for itself. I carry it now just incase I get in spot that you cant get vehicle into I can use Hi Lift come along.

I found mine in the road, fell off a Semi, it was rated something ridiculusly when the lettering still showed. It was like 5" wide and worked great. Then my friend got stuck in his CJ and a guy in a Chevy ripped it to shreds by tying it around a sharp surface and getting a 1o yard run on it before it took up slack. Then he did the same thing with his chain...I just got behind some trees because it wasnt my rodeo at that point.
I think I will get the yellow ones at 4 Wheelers, I some there that were good priced and looked nice.
