In the market for a new laptop.

Question of the day: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL64 or Intel Core 2 Duo T5300?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Josh

That's what I am thinking. I have always been an AMD fan...but these Core 2 Duo's seem pretty schweet!

But as for laptops...

depending on what you plan to do I would just go with the AMD X2

Depending on the bus speed between the two.. I havent looked at the specs.

Just INtel owns the market and Microsoft Built Vista around intels new chipsets

I say go with the Intel. But then again I'm pretty biased.:D

If you're going laptop the lower power consumption if the Intel chip mean longer battery life and lower internal temp of the computer. Just my biased $.02.

That and Nvidia's GPU

X2

and Kevin is right the intel does run a lot cooler and require less resources to run...

So Nvidia designed their GPU around the Intel chip? I thought I read the opposite.

No... Microsoft built Vista around those two CHips...

the operating system "Vista" runs at its best with those two chipsets.

Just be sure to get 1GB of ram or more. Vista is a resources hog, and even with a 2.0Ghz Core2 CPU & 1GB Ram in my sisters laptop, it bogs down a bit.

Buy American/Local.

Intel all the way.

Nothing as of now. it was going to take 1k to fix it. The harddrive is still good. So I am going to keep it for a bit and salvage what I can.

Rich, by local do you mean that Intel's chips are made in the US, or the fact that they have a huge campus here?

There are three Intel factories in Chandler producing chips. Many of your computers will have chips in them made right here in AZ.

Locally made with local employees !

AMD is almost entirely manufacturing overseas these days, they used to have several factories in Austin, but all are closed.

I bought my HP Pavilion A6040N PC about 6 months ago. Its a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6320 Intel Viiv Technology with Windows Vista 2048MB AND 320GB HARD DRIVE. This computer is awesome and very fast, I can open like 10 internet browsers and still surft the web. I upgrade when I bought it and got the 24" Hp Screen with it.

I had three AMD boxes sitting next to three Intel boxes... The AMD were supposed to be faster but according to the app I was running they were no where near the processing speed of the intel... got rid of the three of them and replaced them with 2 intel boxes; those two process more data combined than the three did combined...

Just my experience... others may have a different opinion... I would think some of it will depend on what you're doing with it...

I went w/ Intel on my latest laptop. 800 mhz bus. AMD claims thier bus is full duplex up to 1600 mhz but as yjunk says the proof is not in the pudding. Go with Intel.

see thats where people are confused..

it also depends on the motherboard you buy!!! and if you are into overclocking the cpu gpu ram etc...

See...that's why AMD sucks and Intel is the better product. Why buy an AMD and have to overclock it and risk voiding your warranty?

Most people won't do this in the first place, but others who do it just to stick with AMD chips are foolish....defeats the whole purpose of why they started buying AMD in the first place....at the time (for about a year) AMD had a better chip and it was "hip" to buy AMD versus buying from the mighty Intel...those days are long gone....AMD's chips could be overclocked and they still wont come close to the performance of Intel's latest chips - the most recent benchmark tests proved it and they were done by those computer magazines that have been rooting for AMD over Intel in the last couple of years....even they could not deny Intel's performance advantage over AMD chips.

The statement: "Depends on what you're going to use it for" is no longer valid these days. As other mentioned, Vista is a hog but has very cool features. Also, more and more web sites these days are media hogs...there's a reason that Microsoft chose to design Vista around Intel's chips and not AMD's.....hands down, Intel's chips kick the crap outta AMD chips when it comes to processing power and battery life and heat (who wants to burn their junk with their new laptop sitting on their lap?)...simply put: Microsoft chose the better product line that would enable their product: Intel.

Dell Business series are great but their home laptops are crap, having worked on tons of computers I think I can say that with certainty.... As for the Compaq dying, it was out of warranty, they usually won't fix them, obviously you have not TRIED to use Dell service yet

I have a wide screen HP laptop and a small screen compaq. The HP crapped on it and they put in a new motherboard and hard drive, no questions.

The biggest thing here is, Everyone will have different experience and different luck with different things....Several people have said Airpark Jeep sucks BUT most have said they are GREAT...Which is it....prolly a little of both and maybe some were expecting too much or the guy they dealt with had a bad day.

I have a lot of customers in HP and Compaq's and they have great luck, same with Dell business series. We have seen a lot of Dell Home series with problems but it may have been a short lived thing, who knows.....Toshiba's piss me off constantly but I know others who swear by them. Best this is to get the best deal you can get on the best features (staying with a name brand of course), buy from a reputable dealer and I always suggest on laptops that people pay the extra for the extended warranty, it may be pricey, but one fix and it usually paid for itself.
