Wildcat,

The site looks good, but I'm concerned when you say it's "finished".
From what I've seen trying to keep the AZ-VJC page together, all
Jeep-related webpages seem to be just like their Jeeps; a work in
progress. I did see one thumbnail that didn't link to a larger .jpg, but
unfortunately cannot connect to your server right now to figure out which
one.

Took a trip retracing your steps with my two brothers, one in a cj-7 one in a full size Ford F-250, I was in my WILLYS, We had a good time, and I climbed the hill you spoke of, at least I think I did. When you come up to it, off to the west (left) there's two paths you can take, the southern most one is kinda smooth, the northern one is way rutted, then there's another way down if you just keep heading north without turning west. I turned west went down the north trail, then turned around (all the ways down lead to the same area) and went back up the rutted one I just came down, while everyone watched, didn't have much trouble but it was challenging, Does this sound like it?.
Got a look at that trail up the wash too, that looks like fun but it's way too hot for me without air conditioning, guess i''ll wait till fall to try it. Could use a couple of rockers to go with , but if not, i''ll see if MR. Ed or Randy down at Driven will babysit me. My WILLYS looks immediately too low, We took the rescue road that goes right alongside of it and after spotting my brothers over the crossing at the top, we found the road, which looks like it used to a powerline or telephone road before it all grew over, kinda dead ended, so we had to turn around and go back, and I had to spot them across again. The best part is when we got up to a big wash instead of just crossing we decided to turn east and drive up the wash toward the White tanks. That was some of the funnest wash runnin' i've done in years! that wash also ends up at a nice little rock crawlin' place where we got all the trucks up on the rocks for a group photo. Then it was more high speed 4 Wheelin' down the wash to the powerline road to go back to I-10. Everyone was givin' me guff for leaving at 4:00 am until it started getting really hot at noon and we were almost done. Well I have to go help the Wife get dinner on, Hope everyone keeps it greasy side down, be good this weekend. Later.

Well folks, just got back after having a hoot of a time with Len Sullivan (J10 AMC P/U) and David Oboyle (93 XJ) and myself (88 XJ) in the white tank moutains West of the city.

Had a start time of 9:30 AM at Love's gas station off of I-10 and Miller road (Exit 114), with David planning on showing up at 9:30 and Len planning on meeting us at noon. Both were late cuz of an accident on I-10 at 51st Ave.Strange, both got there about 1/2 hour from planned times. (must have been one heck of a crash.) David fueled up and off we went East on Yuma Road to Watson Road (dirt to the north and paved to the south) and turned North. 2 miles North of Yuma road Watson ends into a trail that heads East then curves north into a sand hill/dune thingy. David and I played around on that a good 45 minutes or more, then we headed out to the trail leading to the 4.0+ trail. parked and walked it. (with both wifes and kids in tow) Got back to the Jeeps in time to turn around and head back to meet Len at the sand hills.

At around 12:30-12:45 Len come pulling up and more playing on the hills is needed. that burns up a quick hour... Trail time... up and around.... and down we go again... take one trail and end up making a loop back to the sand hill. ok new plan... take the trail leading up to the 4.0+ and take Chicken trail to the north end of the class 4.0+ and find out what the trail looks like from there. a solid 3.0+ for the whole trail with lots of interesting hills, rocks and washes to cross. Stopped at one point to walk a side gully, heck saw tracks leading up there. Got a good 50 yards in and OH GEE a twin step water fall with what looks like twin 6 foot steps. Well it has fresh breaks on it.. let's see if anyone climbed it.... got to the top, and yep same crazy mother who ran the 4.0+ climbed this 5.0+ stair step. None of our Jeeps are set up for that, but some of you might want to try it. but it is a dead end.. so once up.. you must get back down the same way.

After that some real nice hill climbs, with rocks and ruts. Nothing too hairy the trail goes from one side of the white tank moutains to the other.. the west side ends at a HILL. Len went down the hill first.. sliding and bumping his way down, followed by me and David playing tail end charlie. We all got down, and LEN ( Should i try it?) says.. "I want to climb that" (or something to that nature) and off he went. took the right side.. got a good 3/4 of the way up..... and he looses traction.....Lots of dust... and then it Quits... the Edelbrock just floods it out... had to been at a good 35 Degrees if not more.

he rolles it back down the hill... restarts it and lets it clear...ok now ready he trys the left fork... (you know those glass packs sound real nice at 4000 RPM) Len is diggin real good.. he picked a nice line up the rutted rocky trail... 4 low, rocks flying, the exhaust roaring and all. Those of us who just watched, (reads: no friggin way I can do that) just watched yelling GO GO GO.. he hits this rut/bump that tosses his rearend up about 3 feet and sideways a good 2 feet. that ends his forward progress. His J10 truck just starts digging rutts, sand flying up and over and through his cab... he keep working the hill... OOPPS white smoke!!! bad news???

He gets back down and he has shreaded lots of tread blocks off a tire or two. It was a cool sight now we need someone to make it up that trail... any takers? That was the hight points of the trail... LEN? (let's all see if Len can write a real trail report...)

So just to keep the 'trips' sectio up-to-date, where exactly is the
meeting point for Bartlett Lake? The group is apparently split, and
those coming up Saturday will be meeting as posted below. Scott wants to
camp the night before, and is meeting at the lake, IIRC. Please tell
this non-native where Bartlett Lake is, so I can get my directions down.

OK folks.. I already have my Jeep, but I am looking to rent one....

Here is the story... My sister and Brother-in-law, want to try out Jeeping. They are looking for a Jeep to rent to go out on the trail and see what we keep going out and doing this for.

So first question.. Where to rent a Jeep... in Scottsdale there is Scottsdale Jeep rentals, but is there a cheaper place? They want $129 per day...

Second question... is there a nice trail in the East metro that you would take a person who has never gone, that is not to hard, and will still give them some thrills? You know a nice 2 to 3 rated trail that will show them a good time, yet make them work a bit to get someplace. Yes, I would be going with them, and would love to invite others to help get them interested in going wheeling. I am not sure when they might do it yet... just started talking with them about it.

Subject: Woodpecker/Upper Ajax trail reports

Hi all --

Saturday I ran the Woodpecker trail for the first time. It wasn't as extreme as I had hoped, but definately fun. We had 16 rigs, with only a handful not having some mechanical problems on the trail. But all vehicles drove the trail to completion on their own power. Four rigs attempted the firehole and one was successful.

Sunday I ran the waterfalls on Upper Ajax with a smaller group (2 CJ5s, 1 CJ7, 1 YJ, and 1 late 70s Bronco). I ran Lower Ajax with the AZVJC a couple of weeks ago, so running the upper 1/2 was something I wanted to do when we didn't do it on the AZVJC run. The second waterfall is CRAZY! We had 4 people on my CJ5 outrigging to keep it from tumbling and decided to strap the 3 remaining rigs up so they wouldn't roll. I had a great time.

My ridealong and I took a bunch of pictures, so I hope you enjoy them. The other camera wasn't digital, so maybe I'll put them online when the prints are developed:

Subject: FJ40 axles on CJ5?

Hi AZers

I've started looking for longer axles for my '68 CJ5 (they're stock width) and I'd like any input anyone here has. From what I can tell, the CJ5 has a 51" front axle (wheel to wheel) and rear is 50.1" (wheel to wheel). The major problem is that both axles need to be offset to the passenger side (transfer case is a Dana 18).

Can I put FJ40 axles under my CJ5 (both FJ40 axles are offset to the passenger side, right)? I found an FJ40 spec webpage that claims the track for front/rear FJ40 axles are 55.3"/55.1". Is 'track' the same as 'wheel to wheel' measurement? Also, spring pad width on the CJ5 is 28" for both axles, but FJ40 spring hanger width is 27" front and 38" rear. My main concern is whether I can relocate the spring pads on the FJ rear axle to the correct location because of the offset pumpkin.

Another option that I can think of is to replace the Dana 18 tc with a Dana 20 (center pumpkin) then use late model CJ axles, but that might turn into a little more work than I'm wanting ...

Any thoughts? Please email or post here ... whichever is most appropriate.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff Meade (jeffm@d...)

I put a 9" out of an early bronco for the rear of my jeep it is 3" wider than
the stock cj7 axles.I am building a dana 44 out of a scout for the front wich is the same length. The rear was easy but it looks like the front might be a little harder. If you decide to go with the fj axles I think my friend has some.

There is always Apachie Trail for good scenerie, or Four Peaks trail, or just take them down to White tanks and show them around.... As far as renting a jeep I have no clue.. I would say check out the dealerships they sometimes rent out vehicles.. Are you Shannon and the boys gonna make the trail42 run?

As far as renting a Jeep, I have rented from Budget Car Rentals. Most of the regular rentals have Jeeps. You won't get one that is rigged out, but they are usually around $70-80 per day. I managed to get one to rent at the fantastic rate of $29 a day, but then again I'm willing to beg.

To everyone who missed the Williams Memorial Weekend Trip all I can say is MY GOD YOU ALL MISSED SOME BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY! Wow, what a weekend. Making the trip were Linda, myself and my uncle Todd. We meandered along the trails south of Williams and found this fabulous spot to camp that Linda knew about. We basically had all of Kaibab National Forest to ourselves! Camped on the edge of the mountain with a view of Bill Williams Mtn. Sunday we explored the lava river cave for a few hours, which was practically the only spot where we ran into other travelers.
To top off the trip the weather was beautiful! The only difficult element about the whole weekend was trying to figure out exactly which spot was the most picturesque, choosing between the meadows, mountains, valleys, cliffs, etc. everything was picture perfect.
I hope everyone else had a great weekend!

For anyone who wants some YJ stuff or has some to get rid of.

Stuff I have to get rid of from a 94. make offer.

1. Bestop windjammer, gray. (almost perfect hardly used)

2. Bestop Duster deck cover, gray, the kind that fits over the folded down
soft top. (a bit dirty 1 broken buckle thingy but otherwise in good shape)

3. Bestop Bikini top, gray (kinda rough shape but still works)

OEM full softtop canvas & windows (no hardware), frost(white) (dirty &
scratched but no rips).

Stuff I need.

1. YJ steering linkage (tie rod & drag link).
2. YJ rear slip yoke 91+ (not the whole driveshaft).

Let me know if you are interested in or have any of the above.

Thanks for suggesting camping in the Williams area. I had a great time -- and learned a few things about towing an offroad trailer. The mice provided interesting evening sound effects.

Subject: Re: Trail 42 From Horseshoe Lake to Bartlett Lake(long)

Hello!

I've got some updates on the Trail 42 run set for Saturday, June 12th.

Due to the afternoon heat I propose meeting at 8:00 AM in the parking lot near the grocery store just southwest of Carefree Hwy and Scottsdale Rd. I think it would be easier for those unfamiliar with the area to meet at this location.

At Bartlett Lake we will be starting the trail by going through the main recreation area and will need to pay a parking fee of $4 per vehicle if we stop to use any facilities. I have contacted the Cave Creek Ranger District of Tonto NF and as long as we are only passing through we will not be required to pay the fee.

I will not be camping at the lake, so far I've heard that Dave will be camping at Bartlett with his XJ on Friday night. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to have company. I propose that any one camping out at Bartlett be at Rattlesnake Cove at 8:30 and be on channel 4. That way they will be able to join up with us as we pass. From there it is only a few minutes until the road becomes gravel and we turnrnoff. At this point we can air down and disconnect our swaybars.

I prefer to take a route that runs along the hill thru a narrow sandy wash north of The Flats and leads to a few coves on the northwest side of the lake. This way we can avoid the crowds parked all over the place down at The Flats. At this point we will follow near the shore a short distance and then begin our journey on FR 42. For those that have a copy of the Arizona Atlas & Gazeteer: Topo Maps Of The Entire State, look on page 50 in the lower left corner and you'll find the trail. (If you'd like a copy they can be found at Wide World of Maps. I'd recommend getting one. Even though many of the trails we run are not well marked on it, I find it to be a valuable resource for getting a sense of where I'm going nontheless.)

Hope to see as many of you as possible,

Scott,
you have set up a good plan. The last time I was at bartlett they had paved the road all the way down to

Scott Kruize

The left hand turn off I want to take is now on the tar. It is between Rattlesnake Cove and the flats. That's why I suggested you backtracking up to Rattlesnake Cove to meet up with us. The area down by the flats is pretty crowded on a Saturday morning so I'd rather use this bypass that runs about halfway up the hillside parallel to the lake and leads to the northernmost coves.

Scott,
you have set up a good plan. The last time I was at bartlett they had paved the road all the way down to
the turnoff wher you can head to the flats. is this the place to meet? where the pavment ends..

There is only one non AZ link on the page. It's for the CJ3B website, because I owe it all to Derek for taking me down this road.... anyway don't forget to leave your ideas for improvement, or just say Hi at the email or guestbook. Subject: Great AZ Resource

For those who may not be aware of it, Arizona has a great resource called the
Public Land Information Center. PLIC basically combines all the information
from Bureau of Land Management, AZ Game & Fish, State Parks, Nat'l Parks etc.
It's located in about the 200 block of N. Central in downtown Phx, right
across from the Bank One tower. Their phone number is 417-9300.
You can find every map imaginable down there plus lotsa books and trail
guides.
A great new service they have is that they have topo maps in their computer
which you can have printed out into any 10 mile grid - no more being stuck
combining quad maps to cover the area you're interested in.
Give them a call or stop by, they are definitely one of AZ least known & used
resources.

At a conference for work recently I came across a CD of maps for the Southwest.
I looked at it for a few hours (it's VERY detailed). It coveres all the roads in
the area...powerline, forest, even city streets. I recieved it from the EPA and
all the maps can be downloaded off the web. I think the address is
http://www.RTK.NET/landview

I have the CD that covers AZ, CO, NE, NM, and UT. You can download by the county
off the link above

Couple of places to try:

Table Mesa Road, north of Carefree. Class 2.5 at its most challenging. Exits
at I-17.

Road to Gillette and Tip Top - two ghost towns south of Black Canyon City,
west of I-17. Class 2.5 or easier. You have to cross the Agua Fria River,
which should be easy this time of year. Part of the road follows a Class 4+
wash. (Terminator?)

Four Peaks Road - Class 2, quite scenic. Air down but disconnecting isn't
necessary. Go to the ridgeline, then either back the way you came or on to
the Tonto Basin and come back via Apache Trail or thru Globe. For a rental,
this is the one I'd recommend.

Maverick Mtn Road (or at least I call it that, its FR-1333) on the west side
of Sycamore Creek/SR-87 - close to the Log Corral trailhead, but go north
from the wash, not into the wash. Class 3, scenic, dead ends in a wash.
Short. Interesting hilltops capped with white milky quartz nearby.

FR-300, Rim Road, easy but further. I'd go thru Payson to Pine or Strawberry,
up to the Rim Road and go East to 260, then back down to Payson. Use the 4WD
to tour Milk Ranch Point. Otherwise you don't really need a Jeep. Very scenic
with expansive views from the rim. Higher and cooler.

That's all I can think of on the top of my head.

Subject: Anyone done the Rubicon trail?

I'm just curious if anyone here has run the Rubicon trail? A couple of XJers from our forum (http://xj.jeep.org) might be planning a Rubicon run in the first week in August. My questions are:

- How many days of wheeling should be expected assuming no serious casualties?
- Is August a bad time of year to be running the trail? I assume that the trail is at its most tame state near the end of the season.
- Anyone here be interested in tagging along?
