My 2004 Unlimited seems to run hot. Normal operating temp on the road is usually just a tad over 210. Is that hot? During the heat of summer, it seems to affect available power too. Is that normal?

On the day we ran Martinez Canyon a couple weekends ago, things go hot enough to melt the plastic on my pressure guage on my OBA manifold. That seems crazy.

Could I need to service something?

Dude, it was hot that day !!

There are quite a few threads about this on this board an others.

What I seem to remember is:

- The gauge in your Jeep is fairly inaccurate as far as an exact number. The only way to get a solid number is to plug in a OBD or similiar device and monitor on the road.

- All Jeeps will run a bit different. As long as your Jeep is consistant, that is fine. Once it changes, you should worry.

Our gauges are pretty much "idiot lights", tif they go high, it's the same as the idiot light turning on.

Mine always runs over 210. And I had a plastic bottle cap melt to my floorboard 2 weeks ago. No carpet, right above the exhaust heat shield in the rear passenger area. When it is hot, the fan pulls more air through the radiator, causing a slight loss of power. No big deal. Also, the air is less dense, causing a slight loss of power due to the fuel/air mix.

Mine runs in about the same spot, just about a needle width above 210. And it got hot enough under the hood of mine to melt the plastic on the gauge of my portable compressor as well.

Same, just above 210 on highway and sometime just under the red in stop and go traffic. I just learn to ignore it...

Mine is exactly like yours, and I think that the gauge is just a reference, Just like RoknRich says.

My XJ with the 4.0 and auto tranny run's about the same temp and is typical for an XJ. Sounds like the Unlimited are the same. If used mine for seroious off road stuff at slow speeds I would add a separate tranny cooler with it's own fan.

I plan to do this with the 53 next year when the auto tranny goes in.

Not sure on the new ones but my YJ with the 2.5l running 35s and 4.10 gears temp is usually no higher than 200 on a bad day. May be just lucky. :D

Thanks for the info guys. Its good to know that all is normal. I suspected as much, but wanted to be sure. This is my first Jeep, and have nothing to compare against.
