Once it cools off a bit ( mid September or so ) me and the wife plan on having a trail welding do's and don'ts get together at our house. If there is an interest. By then that will give me a chance to do some reading and practicing. I will get some welding hoods, scrap metal and welding rod. The plan is to use the dual battery setup. No fancy welding, just trail repair.
Let me or My Green Jeep know if you are interested or even done trail welding repairs with the battery setup and would like to help.
Thanks Walter

We want to weld a spreader bar on the back of the cage on the jeep if you want to use our jeep for a "dummy"
Oh, and as long as it is not first weekend (moving) or second weekend (drill weekend) in September, we shall attend!!!!

I do not know if I would want to weld a spreader bar in with the dual battery set up. That is more for just emergency trail repair. If you had the bar pre cut and notched I would be willing to weld it in for you.

I can provide DON'Ts for the welding class. :D

Sounds like fun, I'll try to come. There has to be a better way to trail weld than barb wire and a car battery.

You are correct... just a quick fix while on the trail to get it home ...nothing fancy or purdy

Ahhh. I see - I have done some but it was only on larger amperage stationary machines plugged in to a wall outlet in the Navy....I was thinking of a bigger set up. Well, we will love to learn the "oh **** I busted my junk" welding too! :D

Place we are thinking at our house...

Sometime in September...

Date and Time.... nothing set yet... we will let everyone know...

Ok... I must ask... what is an autodark?

its a welding mask that automatically goes dark as soon as your start welding... soyou dont have to flip the hood down manually

Ok... I must ask... what is an autodark?

It automatically detects the welding spark and switches to dark automatically within about 1/25,000 seconds after the spark has started to prevent eye damage - but to allow you to see without the darkness of the lens when not welding.

You are correct. Grab a couple of batteries, some jumper cables and 6013 rod then melt the metal together. Nothing pretty just trail emergency repair.

Sounds good. We have several fire extinguishers to keep the fires to a minimum. Maybe we could make it into a welding and other types of trail repairs. Like you did with the chain and we have done with ratchet straps.

Trail 101!! Learn simple trail repairs like RTV and a quarter to stop up a hole in the dif cover!

Trail 151!! Learn to swap out shafts and reassemble your t-case linkage!

Trail 201!! Learn how to tie your rig back together with bailing wire and duct tape!

Maybe even some Post Grad work in Trail Electronics!! Learn how to get that fuel pump running again and how to rewire your headlights!!

<<seriously>>

I was thinking about making a three battery welding rig like the one just posted. Maybe I'll mount it to a receiver rack so it could be mounted up behind the jeep fast. $80 in parts and $90 for three wallyworld batteries!

http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13044&stc=1&d=1187605398

Might even be able to figure out a way to ajust the current, so it could be turned down if it's too hot!

Is 6013 the stuff to use on the trail? I've always carried 7018, but have never had to use it. Guess it doesn't really matter.

It's not the alone part as much as just distance. About 10 mpg and only able to go 55 is starting to hurt :D I think it is time to start thinking about trailering this pig :o

Hey Roxs, this is a must do, let me know day and time. Will this be after your surgery? If so maybe we can make this a pot luck lunch / welding on trail class combo
Also maybe some jeep pooling is in order. (car pool) I'll be driving, and my XJs will do 85 ....no problem ::)

I would like to offer up my rig yet again to be a specimin for welding. I put a hairline fracture in the shock mount with my stunt driver practice yesterday....Before it expands through more wear and tear, it should have a small weld put on it. I don't want it to end up like RokNRich's pitman arm on a trail - If you would like to do a realistic trail weld (as I think busting something in that area would be), you are welcome to use my rig's shock mount to do so. I don't need perfection.

I wold have to see Hangar to believe it. I dont thing it is possible unless you use like 6 batteries. Have to call BS on this one until I see it with my own eyes.

Tow batteries and a coat hangar works. Is it a quality weld, not so much.

Is it more difficult than two batteries and a proper welding rod, OH YEAH.

This is an emergency only type of weld. Do it, get home, grind it out and do it right. Or beter yet replace the part.

I have couple commercial 12v batteries if you want to borrow them for training.

Me thinks if you want this to work, use 3 batteries minimum for best weld job. 3 in series.

[-1 +]----[- 2+]----[- 3+]

1. Connect negative of 1 to lead with 6018 rod.

2. Connect plus of 1 to negative of 2.

3. Connect plus of 2 to negative of 3.

4. Connect plus of 3 to grnd on vehicle.

Make up the cables for it with regular welding cables.

Make sure your clamp on the welding rod end can be

disconnected quickly because if the rod sticks you have a 36V

DC short and God knows how many amps! Welding rods glow very bright before they melt!

I tried to draw the leads, but it wouldn't work, so I verbalized it.:D

Please see workshop doc at http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=24898 but use 3 batteries for better job.
