Subject: Club Webpage input needed
Hey all,
First off, I apologize for not keeping the webpage up-to-date for all the
runs that have been happening lately. I am trying to get familiar with
Front Page Express, as it is a lot faster than building the whole thing
using Notepad.
One feature I added recently is the Members section. About a month ago I
checked and we have something like 80+ members, making the AZ_VJC one of
the largest 4wd clubs in Arizona if I remember correctly. I decided to
add the Members so everyone could see who we are, especially since we
have members who have never met each other.
Now I need your help, if you will go to
http://members.tripod.com/~Yucca_man/azjeep/members.htm and use the form
to send me info on your Jeep(s) I'll add it to the webpage. If you have
a favorite photo already on the web someplace, send me the URL and I'll
use it with your permission. If you want to e-mail me the pic, let me
know in advance since Juno doesn't accept e-mail over 64k in size.
My goal is to cut downon the flashy pictures and stuff some sites have,
since I doubt everyone has cable modems (I know I don't). I hate
text-only, so I'm playing with ways to make the webpage small enough to
load quickly yet still have the graphical elements that make the Internet
so fun.
Thanks,
Jim Yucca-man@j...

I'd really be game for the Williams area and with the extra day it makes it
worth it timewise! If you know of a good way/trail etc. to get up there and
some possible camping spots that would be great. I know I found a river
somewhere in the woods up in that area before, but I have no idea where! But,
I would definitely like to get out of this heat (and it's not even hot yet!)

Hi David,
I don't think that I'll be able to go tomorrow, but while you are out there
you could check out the trail that Troy Franks and I found last weekend. Go
west on I-10 to Miller Road (exit 114 I think). Exit the highway and turn
left - towards the Burger King and Love's truckstop. Just before the Burger
King turn left (east)onto Yuma road and follow it to Watson Road. Turn left
again on to the dirt part of Watson Road and follow it to the water tank.
Turn right at the water tank and you will soon see a huge ATC/Quad hill
climb sand pile. Your truck should make the hill climbs easily - Troy's
Cherokee and my J-truck ran all over them playing follow the leader with a
quad when we were there.
On the other side of the sand pile there is a trail that follows a wash to
the north. This wash will eventually lead you to the class 3-4 trail that
we found.
If you do go out that way, let me know when you'll be going and set your CB
on channel 5. If I'm able to get away I'll meet you out there.

The trail over Bixler's saddle is probably a 3.0. I haven't been there in years so it could be easier or more challenging. The trail to the cave is a well marked forest road. If it's wet you'll need to engage the transfer case. If it's dry a mini-van could make it. There's a neat little trail just north of Hell Canyon that may/may not require 4-wheel drive. This would be a great place to camp. Hell Canyon is kinda of neat. Additionally, the fire lookout tower on Bill Williams Mtn is spectacular and the road leading up there can be a knuckle experience for passengers.
If we decide to go to Williams and explore the cave, you need to bring at least three flashlights with fresh batteries for every person. The cave is about 3/4 mile long. Steve and I spent 3 hours in it the last time we were there. The cave is chilly, the floor is sharp rocks and kind of slippery. The cave is used for geology field trips. Did I mention that this is not a supervised cave? You are on your own here.
Here's the AZ Highways description of the trail. Their directions to the cave are really bad. It's easier to take the Belmont exit and follow the frontage road on the north side of the interstate going west and then turn at the first marked forest road going north. The spur trail to the cave is marked.
http://www.arizhwys.com/Hike/Hike20.html
Of course, there's also a cave near Dupont Cabin (3-4 miles away) that is about 100 yards long and has ruins in it (maybe indian or white settler -- it's hard to tell).

Well folks, just got back after having a hoot of a time with Len Sullivan (J10 AMC P/U) and David Oboyle (93 XJ) and myself (88 XJ) in the white tank moutains West of the city.
Had a start time of 9:30 AM at Love's gas station off of I-10 and Miller road (Exit 114), with David planning on showing up at 9:30 and Len planning on meeting us at noon. Both were late cuz of an accident on I-10 at 51st Ave.Strange, both got there about 1/2 hour from planned times. (must have been one heck of a crash.) David fueled up and off we went East on Yuma Road to Watson Road (dirt to the north and paved to the south) and turned North. 2 miles North of Yuma road Watson ends into a trail that heads East then curves north into a sand hill/dune thingy. David and I played around on that a good 45 minutes or more, then we headed out to the trail leading to the 4.0+ trail. parked and walked it. (with both wifes and kids in tow) Got back to the Jeeps in time to turn around and head back to meet Len at the sand hills.
At around 12:30-12:45 Len come pulling up and more playing on the hills is needed. that burns up a quick hour... Trail time... up and around.... and down we go again... take one trail and end up making a loop back to the sand hill. ok new plan... take the trail leading up to the 4.0+ and take Chicken trail to the north end of the class 4.0+ and find out what the trail looks like from there. a solid 3.0+ for the whole trail with lots of interesting hills, rocks and washes to cross. Stopped at one point to walk a side gully, heck saw tracks leading up there. Got a good 50 yards in and OH GEE a twin step water fall with what looks like twin 6 foot steps. Well it has fresh breaks on it.. let's see if anyone climbed it.... got to the top, and yep same crazy mother who ran the 4.0+ climbed this 5.0+ stair step. None of our Jeeps are set up for that, but some of you might want to try it. but it is a dead end.. so once up.. you must get back down the same way.
After that some real nice hill climbs, with rocks and ruts. Nothing too hairy the trail goes from one side of the white tank moutains to the other.. the west side ends at a HILL. Len went down the hill first.. sliding and bumping his way down, followed by me and David playing tail end charlie. We all got down, and LEN ( Should i try it?) says.. "I want to climb that" (or something to that nature) and off he went. took the right side.. got a good 3/4 of the way up..... and he looses traction.....Lots of dust... and then it Quits... the Edelbrock just floods it out... had to been at a good 35 Degrees if not more.
he rolles it back down the hill... restarts it and lets it clear...ok now ready he trys the left fork... (you know those glass packs sound real nice at 4000 RPM) Len is diggin real good.. he picked a nice line up the rutted rocky trail... 4 low, rocks flying, the exhaust roaring and all. Those of us who just watched, (reads: no friggin way I can do that) just watched yelling GO GO GO.. he hits this rut/bump that tosses his rearend up about 3 feet and sideways a good 2 feet. that ends his forward progress. His J10 truck just starts digging rutts, sand flying up and over and through his cab... he keep working the hill... OOPPS white smoke!!! bad news???
He gets back down and he has shreaded lots of tread blocks off a tire or two. It was a cool sight now we need someone to make it up that trail... any takers? That was the hight points of the trail... LEN? (let's all see if Len can write a real trail report...)

Linda,
Meeting time & place sound great. I picked up the Kaibab National Forest map
this afternoon. There are a bunch of off-road "high clearance required" road
and trails in that whole area with a few hiking trails around. There is one
relatively short trail that heads up Bixler and then has a 2 mile hiking
trail to a lookout that seems pretty interesting.
I'm not sure from the map how 'interesting' these road/trails are but they
are marked as unimproved not for passenger vehicles so hopefully we can find
something interesting and challenging.
Nick - area has an average of highs in the low-60s and evening lows in the
20-30's.
Is there a headcount?

Outdoor Enthusiasts:
Not long ago the National Park Service (NPS) published a document that
suggested sweeping changes for the Cinder Hills OHV area--such as
closure or "relocation" of the area. Due to public concern the NPS has
now agreed to coordinate planning efforts with the Coconino National
Forest rather than producing a unilateral plan that affects adjacent (to
Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments) public lands. The threat
to the Cinder Hills OHV area has not subsided, rather it has taken on a
new form.
Arizona's Coconino National Forest has produced a publication titled
"Ideas for Change". It is a combination of ideas on how the Coconino
forest might change management for ecosystem health, access, recreation,
minerals, land exchange, electronic sites and water resources. OHV
issues, including the Cinder Hills OHV area, and "closed unless posted
open" policy, are featured prominently in the publication. If you value
your motorized/mechanzied access on the Coconino National Forest you'll
want to get involved in the planning process.
Ideas for Change provides background information showing current need for
change, followed by proposals. These ideas resulted from various
workshops and discussions with many community members and other
agencies. Additionally, the publication includes policies from "A
Vision for the Flagstaff Community - Flagstaff 2020" and recommendation
in the "Flagstaff Open Spaces and Greenways Plan".
The cover letter (from Forest Supervisor, Jim Golden) on the publication
states, "Change can be difficult, but its happening whether we direct it
or not. We'd like you to imagine the Flagstaff forests in 15 years
without measures, then imagine how it could be if we begin to make
changes now, while many opportunities are still open to us".
Ideas for Change acts as a catalyst for your own ideas about National
Forest management. Some of the topics are complicated and
controversial--like access and motorized/mechanized recreation. Rather
than taking a position at this time, the Coconino has described
alternative viewpoints for you to ponder. Since forest ecosystems and
human activities are so connected, the booklet became rather long and
will take some time to read.
The Coconino states that comments are most useful if received by June
30th. Ideas for Change can be viewed at their web site:
www.fs.us/r3/coconino
Email comments can be sent to:
flea/r3_coconino@fs.fed.us
The Forest has planned three Open Houses. There will be larger scale
maps to view and Forest Service personnel available to answer your
questions. They will also be taking public comments. Here are the
details for the Open Houses:
Wednesday, May 26 at Flagstaff High School Commons, 4 to 8 p.m. This same
time and location as the Flagstaff and Coconino County General
Management Plan Meeting.
Thursday, May 27, Cromer School in Doney Park, 5 to 8 p.m.
Thursday, June 3, Kachina Fire Station, 5 to 8 p.m.
For copies of the booklet, questions about this project, or to have a
speaker come talk to your group or organization, please contact Alvin
Brown or Debbie Kill at 520-526-0866.

Have you been looking for a bike rack for your Jeep? Look no more.
This is a Fantastic bike rack for Jeeps. It's a "Spare Tire Mount" Heavy
Duty bike rack. It will hold 3 bikes and is lockable, both rack to vehicle
and bikes to rack. It uses a back plate behind the spare tire that acts as a
receiver hitch. If you want to use the rack, you just slide it in. It is
good for up to a 31" tire. I bought this unit new for $125 and only used it
2x before going to a larger tire. I will sell it for $75 obo.

Awhile back I brought up this trail as a possible group run. I know a few of
you were interested. The trail runs from Bartlett Lake to Horseshoe Lake or
vice versa. It sort of follows the Verde River as it climbs up and down the
various hills in between. The terrain, unlike most Arizona trails, is not
very rocky. This is a pretty challenging trail for stock Jeeps running 30's.
All of the hillclimbs are packed dirt and there are lots of big ruts and
washouts. One of the more scenic trails I've been on though.
This is a great chance to get a good mix of stock and built Jeeps together
to have a good time. I'm open for suggestions as far as a date and time go.
Those of you without mods and/or experience should consider giving this one
a try. Just be sure to have tow hooks in case we need to give you a helping
tug :)

Hey Scott, everyone,
I was on this trail back in January!
This is a great trail! I highly recommend
this trail to anyone! I will be in on this
on. The weekend of June 11th we will be in
Sedona again. So anytime around that would
be good for us! I am speaking for the whole

Hey all,
First off, I apologize for not keeping the webpage up-to-date for all the
runs that have been happening lately. I am trying to get familiar with
Front Page Express, as it is a lot faster than building the whole thing
using Notepad.
I hate
text-only, so I'm playing with ways to make the webpage small enough to
load quickly yet still have the graphical elements that make the Internet
so fun.

worth it timewise! If you know of a good way/trail etc. to get up there and

Hi David,
I don't think that I'll be able to go tomorrow, but while you are out there
you could check out the trail that Troy Franks and I found last weekend. Go
west on I-10 to Miller Road (exit 114 I think).

Thanks for the info I think it's a Dana44 it kinda looks like a stop sign.
And I think I have 340 gears. I think that's what the tag said.
I just put on a new tow hook in preporation for the 4.0 run at White tanks
on the 19th I am hoping to get some quick disconnects this weekend and
remove my rear swaybar. OH yea, I need to do some fender trimming too...

Well, Williams sounds a bit cold for me. Maybe with a worthwhile softtop and a decent sleeping bag but I have neither. Anyone up for a trail run and camping in a bit of a warmer area? Definatly not in the valley of course but some mountains within 2 hours or so?

Tucson chapter too! Hear that Jeffrey and Scott?
