ok 3 weeks ago I bought a 1989 Cherokee XJ
5 days after I bought it I put on a Rubicon express 5.5" long arm lift
10 days after i have 33x 12.5 pro comp Xterrain’s on her
I am looking for Dana 44s to build with lockers front and back (watching classifieds) I was told it had a 231 transfer case low and behold its a 242
so I am now looking to put a atlas in it with 4:1
Then started looking at what I am attaching the transfer too, I have a AW-4 automatic... have read nothing good on these!!! so started looking into a T 700r gm tranny what you think? is this a good idea? What do I need to do for a torque converter? Anyone know anything on doing this?
ok then I find a tranny for sale really cheep thin is its attached to a lt-1 corvette motor with the wiring harness and computer with 32000 original miles on it, but this is a high rpm motor... I do not want that for a rock crawler right?
i want a torque motor right?
so what I am thinking is doing the conversion to the 700 r keeping the stock 4.0 strait 6 with a atlas transfer....
ok then if i want go to a V-8 just a stock 350 but will this change the position of the tranny and will I have to re-do my drive shafts?
i have so many question anyone out there want to chat? Ill buy the Beer!!!
i am in scottsdale area Dan

Welcome to the Jeep world. What do you have against the AW4? They are good strong trannies. And you will probably find the 4.0L strong enough also, and they last forever if taken care of.

Welcome to AZVJC. You'll find a bunch of great people around here.
Since you bought an XJ, there are a couple of online sources for XJ information.
Also, Dave O at Desert Fab may be able to help with parts, Fab work etc.

well i am not sure but when I read things like this I tend to want to build something very reliable
(They have a tendency to generate excessive amounts of heat, and are known for unnecessarily consuming more engine power than some other automatics. The shift points in the AW4 feel odd, and the spotty engagment of the lockup torque converter is idiosyncratic.
i dont want to do everything twice and if spending the money on a atlas do i want it fitting the AW-4? Dan

I'd recommend giving Joe a call at Absolute Offroad. He's one of the sponsors here and is good with transmissions and recomendations.

There are a lot of TJ owners that will pull their manual transmissions out to put in the AW-4. It is a strong transmission and there are ways to fix the shift problem. Check out Stu's site or if you have thick skin check out Pirate 4x4. They are both great resources and I think you will end up sticking with the AW-4. Oh and by the way, if you do can you let me know where you found that transmission engine combo as I am one of the ones that has a manual transmission and I would like to get rid of it.
Also, the two previously mentioned are great sources as well as 4 Wheeler's Supply and Truck Werks in Tempe. Jason at Truck Werks had a exo-skeleton XJ that was awesome!!

Go to one of the sponsors here before 4wheelparts. 4WP has helped me before well with minor things but when I went in to get ARBs, Ring n Pinions, alloy axles, master kits, etc. (we are talking thousands in money + labor) they had me standing waiting 37 minutes until they helped me! BELIEVE ME I TIMED IT! I WAS FURIOUS!!!! Then when we talked about a price, it was no where near what they had advertised. The clerk said the codes were not in the computer so they could not give me that price listed in their very own "Offraod Adventures" mag. I was mad, getting lousy service, they manager was even half-arsing his attempt at helping the inept clerk. I left, was given a great deal with quality customer service from another shop. 4WP is good if you need individual items fast and Eathan his very helpful, I now go to 4wheel Supply, Absolute or DesertFab for work done.

Sounds doable, like I said, you still have 2 weeks. Sleep and work are highly overrated.
