Jeff,
Thanks for the offer. My sister has one and neglected to tell me about it.
Also I am getting the pictures of the run I made on Broken Arrow two weeks
ago on disk so I can send them to the az_vjc photo album.
Will be about a week or so before I can get them back.
Thanks agian for the offer I really appreciate it.

I did both on my YJ (add a leafs & body lift) it worked quite well. Are you
sure it has a rear sway bar? I've never seen a YJ with one, but that being
the case I'm sure it's quite safe to remove.

I was wondering,
does anyone have any other suggestions for a friend who has an 89yj, wich is
basicly stock with 31x10.5
tires. he is wanting a small lift and possibly remove the rear swaybar. (can
this be done on a YJ?)
I know it can be done on an XJ but am not sure about the YJ. I had mentioned
to him either a 2in body lift or add-a-leaf's with 11/2 to 2in of lift.
he does not want to go spring over for fear of wandering on road. (does this
happen on YJ"s with spring over lifts) I also told him of quick disconnects
for the front. I thank all of you for your time.
and I am still trying to find someone with a scanner to post my XJ...
thanks again

A YJ has a sway bar in the front and a track bar both front and rear.
The track bar in the rear can be safely removed. I have trouble telling
the difference when I have it on or off. I have also removed my swaybar
in the front. It rides different, but not too bad different. The track
bar in the front, however, is another story. I get frightened at
highway speeds without it on, so it stays on until reaching the
trailhead.

Just so you know, there is a >BIG< difference between a 2" body lift or
add-a-leafs and a spring over axle. It doesn't sound like you want a
spring over axle. A 1 1/4" shackle lift is probably the
cheapest/easiest thing for you, but it will mess with your angles in the
front, causing some steering changes. Shouldn't be too bad. It will
also mess up your approach angle (remember the shackle has to be 2 1/2"
longer to provide 1 1/4" of lift.)

A 2" body list generally requires some welding extensions into shift
levers. Besides, I think they look goofy (but much better than a 3"
body lift.) Whatever works for you.

I would go for a 2 1/2" spring lift, it wouldn't be terribly expensive,
plus you'd get new shocks and whatnot, which are probably wearing out of
your YJ any how.

One of the ideas behind starting this group was to share experiences about Jeep's and related upgrades. I found one that I really like and thought I'd share my thoughts.

Desert Fabrication (here in the Valley) makes a differential protection plate for most Dana diff's. I picked one up for my Dana 30 (TJ - front) about 3 months ago for $45 plus tax. It has paid for itself at least 3 times, where it took a hit that would have likely damaged the coverplate, and possible resulted in loss of fluid. A cheep upgrade, when you think of if. It consists of a flat plate bolts on to the diff (providing some protection there), and welded to it is a heavy plate that follows the contour of the ring gear protrusion (the most vulnerable part).

Installation is simple, and (it is said) can be done w/o taking off the cover plate...but I used it as an opportunity to change out my diff fluid. One suggestion...they say you can reuse the stock bolts...but they're really not long enough...so your well advised to get longer ones. The stock ones will hold...but with very little thread (1/4 inch or so) holding it in. If you opt to install w/o taking off the cover plate, you'll need to hold it in place while your putting on the plate, just in case it decides to pop off.

If you'd like more inf./pictures, here's there Web site...go to diff. cover plate link

I yanked both the front & rear track bars off. Yes it wanders a bit but you
get used to it (rides like a CJ). I found that it flexed much better without
them. I was able to put much longer shocks on & gain about 6-8" of downward
travel without them. I wouldn't recommend really long shackles I had 1-1/2"
(3/4" lift) ones on the front of mine & I always dragged them across rocks &
stuff.

Remember if you pull the track bar off to put stiffer shackles on. The stock
YJ ones are meant to flex and cause major wandering on the street.

I've got some great video of you, your father in-law, and his friends going
over that tough section of Upper Ajax. If you or anybody else in the group

replaced my video capture card (fried the old one), so I can't post the pics
to the web yet.

Later,

I did read that article, and that's what prompted my interest. I called everywhere I could think of for a diesel fuel pre-heater to no avail, so I make shifted a heat exchanger by using a transmission cooler off of a marine power boat and installed it inline with the XJ's heater core. The system as a whole works well, but the trans cooler doesn't heat the water near as much as the semi pre-heater would.

If you want to see the setup, I can show you sometime.

I know this wasn't a AZVJC run, but I thought some of you might like to see the pictures. They are from a trail that runs east of Highway 87.

The trailhead is West off of highway 87 (toward Payson) at the Mesquite Pass creek crossing (roughly 10 miles South of Sunflower). I *think* the trail is called Rocker Panel Pass, but I've never confirmed it.

All I have is pictures - http://www.desertwave.com/~jeffm/Temp/rpp0519/

I hope i do not draw flames for this, but I thought the group might be
interested in this idea.

I work with a guy who prints graphics that he designs onto T-shirts, and

(t-shirt) with computers (mousepad). He can put ANYTHING you want on the pad
or shirt, and they are excellent quality. I had him make me a shirt with a
picture of my Jeep on it, and I am very impressed with his work. If you want
to see an example, please e-mail me directly, and I will e-mail you an

To stay on subject, does anyone know how much a 1.5" lift costs, or what
brand to buy?

Thanks,

I haven't been on that trail since 1993(?). It would make a fun night run this summer.

For Memorial day I would like to go somewhere North - Northeast. There are others that definatly know more trails and camping spots than me so if someone could through out some suggestions.... I will look through my Arizona highways and see what I come up with. I wouldn't mind doing Saturday Night and Sunday night camping. It would be an added bonus to camp near a river or running creek, Maybe we could mix in some inertubbing or something.

John,
I am thinking of making this one too.
But I was informed by a friend today that you have to make reservations
even for camping.. Do you have any information on this? If I go I probably will camp
out due to the cost of the hotels up there being in the $60.00 dollar range per night.
I am not sure if you have to pay to camp either. So if anyone else has any info on the area please let us know...
Thanks

Tricia and I are going to the Jeep Jamboree in Canyon de Chelly June 4,5,6. Is anyone else from this area going? Want to caravan? We are thinking of leaving very early on Thursday 6/3 (with the Sun). On the return we will probably take 2 days to take in some of Northeast AZ that we don't get to on the Jamboree. Even if you aren't up to that early but are going let me know and we can hook up when we get there. We are staying at the Best Western, Canyon de Chelly.

No. We should be back at Butcher Jones by no later than midnight. It depends on the size of the group and if we have any problems.

Gee ... I have been trying to think of a place that won't be crowded. A few come to mind, but none have a water feature:

* Cow Flat Mountain. I rated it 2.5-3.0, but that was 4 years ago. I got my Dodge truck hopelessly stuck on the steep rocky switchback.
* Dupont Cabin or there-abouts

Actually, the first two can go together. They aren't that far apart!

* China Camp. I did this last year on Memorial Day. It was pretty nice. This is in the Dragoons.

* Mount Graham. Never been there, but hear it's nice. East toward Safford.

Anyone have other ideas?

Linda

Where is Cow Flat Mtn? Anyone know of anything up in the high country around
Williams? I'm definitely in for something and a joint Sat & Sun outing would
work well for me. And of course, cooler higher country is always a plus!

I got turned on to eBay recently, and this is a lot of fun if you are into
Jeeps. eBay is an Internet auction house. I got on and searched for "Jeep"
and found all kinds of stuff, from real Jeeps to models, toys and whatnots.

For example, I found GI Joe Jeeps (with attached bazooka!), Hot Wheels Jeeps,
Jeep parking signs, parts, etc.

Just FYI...

Another thought. Cherry Creek to P.B. Cabin, Set up base camp then go explore.

The area around Williams is wonderful! Steve and I have a lot of camping and hunting in that area. Most definitely a cool spot. There's a lava cave up there that is really neat! What a great suggestion!

The trail leading to Cow Flat Mountain starts at the north end of the Cherry Creek Road and comes out southeast of Young.
