Tonto Forest was also granted $369,000.00 of OHV money towards the new road entrance to Lower Sycamore that combines with the ADOT project. The project has begun.

Bridge project on State Route 87 to restrict travel lanes

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will resume roadway improvements on State Route 87 at the Bush Highway on Monday September 10. The project consists of constructing a traffic interchange linking SR 87 and the Bush Highway, also known as the Saguaro Lake Turnoff. The project will also widen approximately eight miles of shoulders providing additional safety for motorists.

Monday's work will involve placement of concrete barriers to establish the work zone. The roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction until September 21 for barrier placement and truck hauls. The restrictions for northbound traffic will continue until summer 2008. The speed limit will be reduced for the duration of the project.

The work will resume activities that recently inconvenienced many motorists traveling the SR 87 during the Labor Day Weekend. ADOT regrets the inconvenience that the public experienced and has revised plans to establish the work zone in an effort to reduce the impacts to travelers.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed with caution, obey all posted speed limit signs, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

Road conditions and up-to-date restrictions can be found by dialing 511 or going online to www.az511.com.

What are they doing that is going to make it different (better) than it is now? When will it re-open?

Sounds to me from what I have read there will be an overpass there and also a straight in entrance from the saguaro lake road across the highway to access the sycamore area. No more playing chicken with cars coming from east and west.

Yep............ The new entrance will be directly across from the Saguaro Lake Road. There will be an overpass to allow safe on/off to Hwy 87.
The OHV Federal Hwy dollars (RTP... Recreational Trails Program) awarded Tonto $300,000.00 to develop the trail from where ADOT leaves off to the existing Lower Sycamore area. There will eventually be paved parking and road.

Re opening........... it will be awhile. Although the overpass isn't expected done until 2008 summer, Tonto has been awarded the grant dollars for the road so hopefully that portion of the new entrance can be opened by the end of the year. The Friends of Sycamore can finish with their plans and Tonto can do the NEPA during this time. It will also hopefully deter the drugs and parties in this area thusly keeping it safer and cleaner for OHV.

Cool then it will just be OHV and shooters, nice mix, don't you think :)

Sandee - I have some signs for Troy but I'm not sure if I'll get them to him in time for the training on the first day. I"m only going to be there on day 2.

Will you be seeing him before then?

Re "Shooting".......... there will be shooting allowed in CERTAIN, safe areas. Most of the areas now being used will be posted CLOSED to shooting. It is not illegal to shoot on FS or BLM lands but if the abuse continues all areas will be closed eventually. Tonto closed hundreds of acres a number of years ago............. that's part of the reason Table Mesa is hit so hard. State Lands have never been open to shooting other than lawful hunting. That may very well be what happens to all lands if the abuse doesn't stop.

No, sorry, I won't be seeing Troy. I won't be attending this first training session. I'm heading out of town on Wednesday, back on MOnday.
