Subject: Crown King trip report 5/8-camping version
As a nice ending to the CK run the camping report follows:
We found a fabulous camping spot situated in a small valley a couple of miles
up the road from Crown King. The valley prevented some of that fierce wind
from blowing the tents away for which we were grateful.
Remembering the below freezing temps of Cherry Creek, many blankets and a new
sleeping bag were broken in and a nice warm night followed.
The evening progressed as follows: gather wood, burn wood, drink beer (no
guns please), gather more wood, drink more beer. Big fire, lotsa wood, beer.
That pretty much covers it!
FYI: there are some interesting looking hiking trails up there between CK &
Horsethief Basin if anyone is interested in exploring.

Nice report, especially the nite time activity report...wood, beer, wood, beer.
Kinda reminds you of Blazing Saddles, eh? :o)
As to hiking, I've done the Algonquin trail, which was very nice, to the old mine, and several others that I don't know the names of. This is a really nice area, and good for rock hounding. Came face to face w/ my first rattler at a mine in this area. He didn't make a sound, and I was w/in bout 5 feet of him before I saw him. We said hi, and quickly parted company.

The trail is in 2 parts. The first is a little easier than the second. If we hit the trail near 8am, we should be able to be back to the trail head by mid afternoon. If you have to split, you could just do the first half.

Anyone built an onboard camping shower for their rig? I've been looking for a heat exchanger (to heat the shower water) that I can run inline with the heater core on my XJ ... no luck though.
I've heard of using fuel pre-heaters from semi trucks or power steering coolers from marine engines, but I can't seem to find anything here in the area that'll fit inside my engine compartment of my '98 4.0L XJ.
Arrow Dismantlers was mentioned in a Jp magazine a while back, but I called them and they said now they can't keep 'em in stock ... go figure :)
Any experiences or help would be much appreciated.

You could form up somthing similiar to the exhaust manifold coolers used
on boats. Basicly have an outer pipe welded over your exaust pipe just
below where it attachs to the manifold (kind of assumes a stock
manifold). Then when you run water though it you would be picking up a
much hotter source so the water would heat much faster.
Just a thought. Haven't actually seen one built.

Jeff,
One of the local 4X4 people here in Tucson has a nice shower rig hooked up
in his XJ. You could call him at his shop to talk about it. His name is
Scott Sides...you would have to look up the #, I do not have it at the
moment, but I know its listed. His shop name is PROFAB on Grant road in
Tucson.
Goodluck!

As a nice ending to the CK run the camping report follows:
We found a fabulous camping spot situated in a small valley a couple of miles

from blowing the tents away for which we were grateful.
Remembering the below freezing temps of Cherry Creek, many blankets and a new

The evening progressed as follows: gather wood, burn wood, drink beer (no

That pretty much covers it!

Horsethief Basin if anyone is interested in exploring.

The trail is in 2 parts. The first is a little easier than the second. If we hit the trail near 8am, we should be able to be back to the trail head by mid afternoon. If you have to split, you could just do the first half.

Subject: onboard shower?

His shop name is PROFAB on Grant road in
Tucson.
Goodluck!
