The bypasses are supposed to be easy enough for stock jeeps.

As a matter of fact, there's a dirt road right next to the wash/creekbed
you'll be driving up. All you have to do is preview the trail between the
connections to the main road, and you can decide whether you want to take
your Jeep on that particular leg of the wash. Up towards the top It gets
pretty nasty, you guys are gonna have a ball!!

I'm not sure if there are bypasses, since I hadn't done Ajax before...but it

I may have this wrong...since I was thinking Saturday, and some posts were listing May 16, which is a Sunday...The following suggestion is based on Saturday, but Sunday would probably work for me also. Please advise if Sunday is better.

Suggestion:

When: next Sat. at 8am

Where: Florence Junction Texaco

CB: Channel 5

So far, GregC, KenU, JeffH, ScottK, DougB, JimK are planning on going. A maybe from DanMcF.

This should be a good one, w/ some challenging spots, esp. if we do upper Ajax as well. As to camping, I'll probably not do that...too much stuff I've got to get done round the house. There are some very nice spots though.

See ya there.

955 From: <Revolvr@a...>
Date: Sat May 8, 1999 7:10pm
Subject: Crown King trip report 5/8

Today's Crown King trip had myself in the lead (TJ), followed by Nick (YJ),
Mike (MDSummers, TJ), Melinda (TJ), and Bond, Karl Bond (ZJ) and Dan
McFarlane (TJ) as tailgunner.

We had quite a bit of traffic this time, with several groups of 4 wheelers in
front and behind, plus an assortment of ATVs and dirt bikes. We knew we were
in trouble when the traffic on Channel 4 was too much, so we switched to 8.

The trail was as I remembered it from last August for the most part. Except
for the ZJ, we all took the more challenging routes rather than the bypasses
and enjoyed every one. A few nerf bars were scraped, but nothing a little
Rust-Oleum can't fix.

I was impressed by the lack of garbage on the trail, although in retrospect I
think I've been a bit desensitized since the Coves Cleanup run. Beer cans
prevailed, Bud usually.

We occasionally passed up the other groups, and vice versa. I finally decided
these people all belonged to the BATF, for they were all drinking, smoking,
and carrying sidearms.

Our first bit of trouble occurred about half way through when a track bar
bolt on Nick's YJ sheared off. We cleverly thought a couple of plastic Zip
ties would serve as a replacement for the bolt, but that probably didn't last
a few hundred yards. At lunch we finally got the other bolt off and removed
the track bar completely. Lesson Learned - bring a torque wrench. We got it
off by rigging up a rock, scissor jack, socket wrench, and two people on the
bumper. (Don't try this with a TJ!)

Later, we had to stop while a Dodge pickup was towed off a ledge. If you've
been on this trail, you might remember a fairly substantial ledge to get over
about 3/4 of the way into the run, just before reaching the Oro Belle Mine.
Stock vehicles can't do it. Well, they pulled the Dodge over with a snatch
strap. Then the next group (we were third in line) began piling up rocks to
make a ramp. I suggested that perhaps they didn't need to do this, but they
did for they had an Izuzu to get across.

Then came our turn, so being the responsible types, we removed all the newly
placed rocks to return the ledge to it's former state, and crawled up without
problem, except for Karl's stock ZJ. He got hung up on his nerf bars.

To make a long story short, we got a lot of "help" from the gun toting beer
drinking group behind us. And we had to pile up some rocks to do it. We would
have removed the rocks, but the group behind us had fairly stock long
wheelbase pickups and would have piled the rocks back on anyway.

Further on down the road Karl got a flat, a nice surgically clean 3 inch gash
in a sidewall. No problem getting that taken care of. The last fourth of this
trail is rough on tires. But, with all due respect to Chrysler and Goodyear,
those Wrangler tires that come with Jeeps are just not off road tires. I hope
Karl has some off road tires in his future. They make a real difference.
Anyone know how big a tire can be put on a stock ZJ?

After stopping a while in Crown King, those of us not camping followed me
out, foolishly since I made a wrong turn. But, hey, it was scenic.

All in all a good run. A bit crowded at times but still fun.

Thanks for leading the way on this one Dan, and for serving as Master
Mechanic on more than one occasion. My boys and I had a good time. It
will probably take me most of the day to clean up the jeep, but it was
worth it. It was nice seeing you and Melinda again. Nick, Karl and
Mike, it was nice meeting you guys. I always enjoy meeting new folks on
these trips. I'm looking forward to our next run together. Sorry I had
to bail out on everyone in Crown King. With all of our unexpected stops,
I was about an hour late getting the boys to mom's, so I didn't have time
to poke around CK. Maybe next time. Thanks again.

Subject: ZJ tire sizes (what fits)

Hi Karl,
Heard about all the fun you had. I would have rather been on that trail ride than fixing swamp coolers and cutting grass! Does anyone know of a reasonably priced lawn service? My yard seems to get larger as summer progresses!

Anyway, tire sizes:

235/75r15s will fit on a ZJ with a stock suspension. Anything taller will probably be rubbing.

With a 3" lift, 31" tires are the top limit.

With a 4.5" lift (like I have). 31-32" tires fit, but will rub off the paint on the inside of the wheel wells and there is some sheetmetal that has to be trimmed or bent in the front wheel wells. You don't have to trim the front bumper. No problems in the rear wheel wells.

I recently put 33x9.50r15s on the stock ZJ wheels. There is some necessary trimming in the front wheel wells (actually it's pretty radical) but all of it is inside and you can't tell from just looking at the ZJ. Of course I also cut off the lower 6-inches of the front bumper. I have a custom rear bumper that really opened up the rear wheel wells.

One more note: The 33" dia tires will fit in the standard spare tire carrier inside the ZJ, so there is no need for an external spare tire carrier, unless you need more interior space.

Hope to be out on another AZVJC trail soon!
Linda

Sunday the 16th is the day, 8:00 at Florence junction is the time.
Attendence so far: Greg, Doug, Jeff, Ken, Scott, & maybe Jim

If anyone has been left out let me know, so we can make sure everyone is accounted for. Wouldn't want anyone to be left behind:)

I would be up for meeting at 7 to beat the heat, what do ya'll think?

Ken, I have an old set of springs off my 89yj.

My brother and I will be camping out Saturday night. Is anyone else planning
on camping out? I am unfamiliar with the Florence area and would appreciate
any recommendations.

Greg,
I thought 8:00 sounded pretty early. Don't you work at Luke AFB? I say no
military guys are allowed to set the meeting times on these runs. :)
