A friend is moving to California with her (drool) totally stock original owner 1981 CJ-7. She is worried about getting it registered there. I have researched the CA DMV online and found only stuff relating to buying a new vehicle out of state. The last I heard, as long as your vehicle was not tampered with, and it met its original smog requirements, you were okay.
Does anyone have any more detail, links, info, experience?
Thanks!

And with a sniff of the ***, I passed!! That’s right, my lil CJ7 passed the California Smog Nazi test yet again (and with flying colors I might add) and I’m good to drive her around for the next two years hassle free - yeah baby!! For those of you out there still trying to rebuild your factory emissions controls, fruitlessly looking far and near for impossible to find smog parts and coming up empty handed, do yourself a favor and install a Howell TBI instead. Trust me, it’s worth every penny and you’ll be kicking yourself wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.
California requires you have all the original smog equipment on the vehicle. Or it can be modified with an approved fuel injection system like the Howell up above. When I lived in CA and bought an older car I would go to smog it and most of the time the Emssions People don't know whats factory and whats not. If you pass the ol tailpipe test you were good to go. You would get a know it all once in awhile and thats where you ran into trouble. I suggest she takes it to CA and gives the emssions place a shot. Most likely, unless the thing is way out of tune she'll pass with ease.
Just my $.02

Thank you for the info--that collaborates with what I have heard so far. Since hers is in excellent condition, I don't think she should have to worry. But she is moving to Santa Cruz--one of only two remaining functioning communist governments (the other is Jerome AZ :D )
Anyone else have good, bad, or otherwise insights?

I don't think she has a snowballs chance in Blythe of her Jeep passing the Cali smog nazi's. She should probally sell it.;)
