Jeff,

Great. I plan on making the Crown King trip on the 8th. Pleanty of great camping sites. Depending on the sive of the party, I know of one that offers a fantastic view of the western slope of the Bradshaws. If this weather keeps up, bring some warm clothes....we'll be up in the pines, and it will get cool.

Since you'd be coming from the furthest, what start time would work best for you? Also, if you've never been to the trail head, I could meet you at I-10 and Queen Creek Road (south of Phoenix), and we could head north from there.

Note to all,

Who all's planning on this run (Sat., May 8th)? I lost track of the older posts.

As for assembly area, we could meet to the west of the park entrance to Lake Pleasant. Another option would be to meet at the Exxon station, right off I-17...to the east, on Bell Rd. Would be easy for everyone to find..., we could top off and then caravan to the trail head. Waddayatink?

the May 1, but would be interested in the May 8th trip. However, I don't

CB this weekend (Thanx Eric, for the heads up on that!)

Eric,

The Crown King trail is excellent for a stock TJ. There are bypasses around all the really tough stuff for those that are not yet up to it.

I'll be going tomorrow since I'll be in Las Vegas on the 8th.

I'd highly recommend getting the Cobra 75 WX ST. It's perfect for a TJ. DougB has one in his TJ as well. You can mount the mike on the stock screw just to the right of the steering column. The entire radio is in the mike. The antenna lead and power come through one coiled lead that I plug into a module smaller than a cigarette box that I mounted in the glovebox. It's very easy to unscrew the one cable when I'm not using it. Check it out at this URL:

You can do this trip with a stock jeep, and you may be amazed at what you've
done.

If you don't have a CB in time, I have a spare. Let me know ahead of time. I

I'm looking forward to making the 5/8 run, but I won't be camping. As
far as meeting time and location, I'd prefer to meet somewhere nearer the
lake. Being on the west side of town, I-17 would be out of my way. And
the earlier the better. I seem to remember this run taking most of the
day to complete.

Note to Michael Summerfield:

My first "real" 4x4 adventure was the Crown King run in my stock '97 TJ
about 3 years ago. It was a challenge for me due to my limited
experience, but my TJ didn't break a sweat. I DID scrape a few rocks,
though, but received no visible damage. The TJ's were brand new back
then, and the rest of the guys I went with were skeptical about how mine
would perform. They didn't seem too skeptical by the end of the day.
You'll have a great time. We might even have some water in the creek
beds from this rain. The guys going this morning will definitely find
some water.

See you all next week.

While waiting for the format of a BIG hard drive to finish, I got
bored and dug through some engineering books.

Coke is sort of charcoal. To make coke, coal is heated--not hot
enough to burn it--just hot enough to drive off the volatile materials
within it. At the coke ovens, they probably started with wood and made
charcoal, but misnamed the ovens.

You all have several mailing list options you can change by going to the

The web site is:

FWIW, I like the idea of setting up a club photo archive, and I'd like to be able to access and download the pictures. Posting via e-mail doesn't bother me, though I understand that it may others, due to system differences. Is there a site we could use where photos can be accessed and downloaded...where individual members can post the photo's? Is there a way to set up the AzVJC Web site to do this, where the photos could be posted by members, w/o Jim having to mess w/ them?...that would also allow downloading? Or purhaps a separate site?

Linda L posts hers to I think the ASA site, and these I've been able to copy/download. There are a ton of pictures there. Linda...any thoughts?

I have set up an AZ-VJC account with Photopoint (www.photopoint.com).

This gives one central place for all trail photos, organized by trail run.

And better yet, anyone who took pictures can upload photos to this site
directly.

Here's how it works. If you want to upload pictures, send an email with the
picture attached. The SUBJECT line must say exactly:

Account: AZVJC@a...

The body can be empty. Just attach the image to the e-mail. If you are using
AOL, you can only attach one image per e-mail.

What happens next is these pictures get put in a private "Incoming" folder.
From there, I distribute them to appropriate photo albums created for each
trail run. Each album shows thumbnails and captions, and you can click on
each picture to get an enlarged image, and download if you want.

Once I move the picture to the photo album, a message is sent to everyone on
the list with the URL. This URL allows you to get access to all of the trail
run photo albums.

I'll be sending you all a sample of the e-mail with the URL so you can go
check out what's there already.

Let me know what you think. Thanks to Jon Loveless for the idea.

We all had a great time on the run today. In attendance as far as I can recall, and please correct me if I miss a name, was Eric (JPnDutch) in his white TJ who was our tailgunner, Art & Karen in their black TJ, George and his wife in a full size Cherokee, Tony in a Discovery, and then two other vehicles we ran across at the White Horse. The Geo Tracker and Toy pickup asked to tag along and of course we didn't turn them away :), and then there was myself, Scott (OSM TJ). I wasn't expecting to lead the group when I showed up, but Eric asked if I would since I had been up this trail many times before.

Everyone had a great time and the little Tracker provided some entertainment for us. He had to be strapped only once due to high centering, but otherwise did better than most of us expected. Only visible damage was to the rear bumper on Tony's stock Land Rover which dragged the right side on one of the obstacles. Most of our group did a great job of negotiating the rougher rocky spots. I was proud that none of the Jeeps in the group took the bypasses. To all of you going next week I assure you that if you end up with as great a bunch of people to go out there with as we had, you will definitely enjoy yourselves.

Please excuse my venting but I personally was slightly disappointed in the condition of the trail. It seems that many have decided to "fix" the trail. There are many new bypasses and alot of the obstacles have been filled to the point of extinction. One group had prerun the trail in preparation for a group of 30-40 vehicles on Sunday and trimmed back the brush. They also filled many ruts and holes. I am thankful that the AZVJC does not condone these practices.

I hope the rest of you all have a great time next week and I'll catch up with some of you at the Ajax run on the 16th.

Here's how it works. If you want to upload pictures, send an email with the
picture attached. The SUBJECT line must say exactly:

Account: AZVJC@aol.com

Well...let's toss this out and see what the consensus is:

Where: West of the entrance to Lake Pleasant Regional Park...there's a flat spot along the side of the dirt road...before the turn off for Crown King.

When: 9am

Directions: Take I-17 north to the Carefree Rd exit...go west on Carefree Rd. This road will dead end at a "T" intersection w/ Lake Pleasant Rd (SR74). Go right at the "T". Follow this past the dam (which will be on the right/north side of the road)...keep going and after the dam, on the right will be the main access road to the Lake Pleasant Recreation Area (signed). Take this for a ways (it's paved), and keep an eye out for the park entrance. The road will "T", and the entrance will be to the right...but turn left instead. Up the road a short way will be a wide flat spot for airing down and disconnecting.

How's this sound??

Also...anyone form the Tucson chapter making this one? If so, we could shift the starting time a little to accommodate the long trip.

DougB

Thanks for taking the lead on this, Doug. These plans sound fine to me,
but we won't be camping. See you next week!
