I'm tired of ROCn the Jeep in the heat and my little S-10, while still a pretty reliable ride, just has too many miles on it for me to really feel comfortable in on long trips.
SOOOoooooo... I'm starting to think about a new or relatively new car... but I'm giving myself brain damage trying to compare etc... Would like to know if you're driving around in something that you would definately buy again. Not looking for speed or performance, I drive like a grandpa on the highway... but I'd prefer it not be a complete dog either...
Anyways; give me some recs... I'd like to keep it under $30k
Thanks...

Are you looking for economy? We paid 9K for my wifes Hyundai Elantra. Great little car, peppy as all hell, and fun to drive. Mileage ranges 28-32 MPG (depending on which one of us is driving)

Bah, go something with all wheel drive, then you can rally the sucker.
The Hyndai (?) line looks good. They seem to have alot of bang for the buck.
Other wise, I have no idea what I am talking about. The last time I owned something that didnt have a transfer case was back in 1994.

What type of car are you looking for???
It depends on what you have hiding back there in that shop!!!
Honestly I'm not sure; I've considered everything from a C230 to an Impala SS... I've been driving the S-10 for seven years so I really don't even know where to start... There are a lot of cars I like for a lot of different reasons...

How about a tow rig???
Careful, tow rigs lead to things like rockcrawlers, sand rails, colletor cars, boats (waterskiing, fishing, sailing, SCUBA diving), quad racers, campers, more tools, hunting, bench seat so your girl can sit next to you.
SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!
Go for a quad cab diesel, take all your friends and tow all your stuff with decent gas mileage, and with proper care last for more than 200,000 miles.

LOL... Well the "Good" news is... everyone has a differenet opinion and the dozen cars I had to consider has just turned into two dozen.
I'm trying to keep the purchase price under 30k as I've been debt free for years and adding any payment is going to be sticker shock for a few months... (even with a pretty good down payment).
I'd love to run out and get a newer BMW M3 or something in that range, I just know I'd regret it after a few months... (used to have a convertable Jag and I loved it and hated it all at the same time; loved driving it but worried about it getting scratched and dented way too much).
Additionally I know some of you have seen my Jeep, it needs "parts" and you've got to have priorities...
Thanks for all the input :)
Jason... I'll give you a call and we'll sched some test drives...

Hey for 30K you could get part of a Viper. Pay that off and get another part. Hell after just 15 years you could own it. If you live out of it you might qualify for a home loan. Good luck on the car purchase.
I tell ya, I rented a new Toyota Camry last summer when we drove up to colorado. This is one nice car! It wasn't till the way home that I popped the hood to check out the v-6 - and surprise! it was a 4 banger. Sure felt like a 6. Sailing right up those mountain passes, passing people doing 80. No vibes, nothing. Good handling, lots of room. Average 28 mpg no matter city driving, highway (even at 85+)
But, the best test drives are just renting a car for the day or weekend, if you can. Most rental places rent Camrys and Alitmas, alongh with the usual array of Chyrsler, GM and Fords. I like the looks of some of the Chryrslers, but, IMO anyway, they felt and rode like a cheap car. Same with most generic line GM's. In fact, when I rent, I'll only rent a Toy or Nissan now. Guess that makes me a traitor :(
I think there's a reason that toyota is now pretty much the #1 seller.

I know you are not thinking about a pick up because you don't need two but here is what I would do.
If the old pickups value is so low it will become a money pit soon. I am guessing tires and brakes are in the near future. Hopefully not have engine, transmission, rear end, or air conditioning issues but the older it gets the more likely will happen.
If you can't get much by selling it or even worse trading it in just give it to charity.
You will get a tax deduction sometime saving you more than you could have sold it for, it won't be draining your wallet, and you can buy a new or slightly used pickup with a warranty. Your insurance will be less than with two vehicles also.

100 Oil May Be Months Away, Not Years, Say CIBC, Goldman
By Mark Shenk
A woman pumps gasoline into her vehicle July 23 (Bloomberg) -- The $100-a-barrel oil that Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said would prevail by 2009 may be only a few months away.
Jeffrey Currie, a London-based commodity analyst at the world's biggest securities firm, says $95 crude is likely this year unless OPEC unexpectedly increases production, and declining inventories are raising the chances for $100 oil. Jeff Rubin at CIBC World Markets predicts $100 a barrel as soon as next year.

Well I just went thru the same exercise back in June. My '92 Volvo wagon I had for 7 years was giving me transmission troubles at 154k miles. Cost as much to fix the tranny as the car was worth. Was tired of driving it. The month prior I had left a pepper spray canster in the car on a very hot day at it exploded. Needless to say I could never get that smell out of the car so I traded it in on a new Mustang convertible, V6. Had it 6 weeks now and gas milage is 18 to 28 MPG with a 5-speed. Most fun I've had in years. Seems to be pretty sound car. Paid less than $24k using the Ford X-plan thru work. Came with leather, premium and pony packages. Only sits two adults confortable. The back seats are ok for my 12-year old.

why? hybrids still use petrolium. i can take my diesel jetta to western states petrolium in down down phoeinx and fill up on B100 (100% biodiesel made from soy beans that were grown in the midwest). hybrids are not the answer to oil dependancy, only a band aid on a shotgun wound.

The pu only gets about 8 to 10k of miles a year; the has 114k on it but I had it reuilt at 100k so its pretty fresh... had the front end rebuilt at 110 etc... with the new car it will probably only see just a few thousand miles a year... I did find what I was looking for but ended not caring for the deal... the sales guy told me he had me "approved" for a good rate and then tried to switch me into a different program because I'm self employed... even though I disclosed that prior to the application. I offered to put additinal down to keep the rate down (60% vs 30%), but I was informed I had to finance at least $15k...
Oh well... it was a sweet car... not sure what I'll do now. In the short term I'll just keep popping around in the S10... Maybe for my trips up to flag for the balance of the summer I'll just rent something...
Neal you mentioned the hyundai... there are nice little cars, my mother is on her second one... I may still go that route and just skip the financing all together...
