Yes Doug! I agree with Jeffrey. Great report!
Thanks to Scott, Brian and you
Doug for making that long trip from/back to Phoenix.

A very big thanks to Tucson members Scott and Jeffrey for
their support. This was the first time I have ever led
a run! You guys are the best!

I'm sorry I did not get to answer everyones questions
about this run, I was over welmed the last few weeks.
I feel I should have been more on top of this.

Looking foreward to more runs with the AZVJeep club!

George,

We're definetly still on for May 1st ! I expect to bring along 2-4 other
vehicles (friends, colleagues). We're still a little too far from May 1st
for definite arrangements, but I propose the following:

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trail head ("T" at entrance to Lake Pleasant road
and Castle Hot Springs)
Optional, 8:00 a.m. breakfast (at old Smitty's on S/W corner of I-17 and Bell
Rd.)
Camping optional (I will go back that same evening).
Leader: Any volunteers?

Regards,

Eric Kool

I have these and they are great. You calibrate them for the desired deflation pressure, then they always deflate down to that pressure. You can leave them on for 1/2 hr, so you don't even have to wait while they are deflating. The only problem is you must have your tire inflated to approximately twice the desired deflation pressure i.e. to air down to 15psi your tires must be inflated to 30 psi.

Hi Joe. Welcome to AzVJC. The Rolls/Coves are in the northeast part of
the Valley, north of the Salt River and associated lakes. It's really a
pretty easy place to get to. The simplest way would be to take SR87
(State Route 87) north out of Mesa. This is known as Country Club in
Mesa. It's also known as the Bea Line, and heads to the northeast to
Payson.

Depending on where you are in the Valley, you can get to SR87 (Country
Club) from US60...take the Country Club exit and head north through Mesa
and over the Salt River. Keep going...you'll pass Shea Blvd...keep
going...and will pass Ft. McDowell...keep going. After Ft. McDowell,
keep an eye out for signs for Bush Highway...it'll head off to the
right. Take this a fairly short distance and you'll see a sign for
Butcher Jones Park to the left. Take this road, and you'll end up in tha
park parking lot. We'll be there at 9am.

Hope you can make it.

Doug

How effective is unhooking the rear sway bar?

want to do Crown King two weekends in a row.

Having to bow out of this weekends clean-up due to repairs (gotta love

Anyone else done Ajax? Can I do this trail (for those who know me)?

Lower Ajax is a strong 3+, I believe, and upper Ajax is, I think, a 4. I
havn't done them yet myself, so I'm going from memory. I would think
they'd be pretty tough for you w/o more of a lift. However, there is a
trail that parallels the Ajax trail (which is actually a wash), that is
passable w/ a stock Jeep.

It certainly helps, though it's no where as dramatic as front sway bar
disconnects. The rear sway bar (at least on the TJ) is much lighter than
the front. However, I really do like the TK's. They do allow more rear
articulation...keeping the Jeep more level on uneven terrain.

Turn On Your Lights for America

As I was driving to work this morning I passed by an elementary school and
noticed that the flag had been lowered to half-mast in memory of the students
and their families in Littleton, Colorado. What a wonderful gesture that
simple act is. But, I thought to myself, what can I do to show others that I
too am deeply affected by this tragedy.

Turn on a light. Turn on my headlights. Turn on my porch light. But how do I
get this message to others? Use the Internet. I'm sending this message to
everyone on my email list and am asking that you do the same.

I am going to turn on my headlights on Friday morning on my way to work, on
Saturday as I run my errands and especially on Sunday as I go to my place of
worship. I'm also going to turn on my porch lights on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday night.

I'm going to turn on my lights for the families in Littleton to show them
that I care about them, that I feel the pain and hurt and heartache. I'm
going to turn on my lights for what is right about this country.

I'm going to turn on my lights against the darkness, the anger and the
prejudice. I hope you will join me. One light is not much but put them
together and we can light up the world.

Turn on your lights - show that you stand for what is right about America.
And as you turn on your headlights and porch lights this weekend; turn on the
light in your heart and soul. Show the world that this is not what America is
all about. With your light shining bright, along with others, we can come
together (if only for a brief moment) and combat the evil that confronts us
all.

Please pass this email on to everyone on your address list. Lets see if we
can get this message to everyone across this great country before Friday
morning and use lets the Internet for what it was intended - good.

At my work (Image Craft, an imaging lab) we do alot of what's called making a copy neg. It involves basiclly taking pictures of very old pictures or books or paintings, whatever you want to reproduce photographicly. Tonight we did copy work of some old pictures in a book. The book was "Walker district historical notes" by a Mrs. R J Potter, from Prescott. It was written in 1957. The ID number for the book (it is owned by the Phoenix library) is g979.13. Anyways, I was flipping through it and came upon a picture of a coke oven identicle to the ones on the coke oven, martinaz canyon run. It only had a few sentences describing it but apparently this one had been built in 1880 and they were called "Date Burners". Somehow they were used in mining silver and did not burn coke but burned charcoal because there were no trains nearby to bring in the coke. It said this was one of very few left in Arizona and that was the end of that short paragraph. I thought I would relay this information because I didn't think no one really knew to much about them, I guess we still don't know alot!

I'll see ya'll on Saturday at the coves. I think I will bring my mother along for the adventure. She really enjoys the thrill of being offroad!

Interesting...thanks for the info. As it turns out, the Coke Ovens we
know of were not built for coke, but to make charcoal. How they came to
be known as the Coke Ovens, I'm not certain.

I've copied your post to my Club, and maybe someone can give you some
further advice about local rentals, etc. One reply to your post mentioned
the amount of public land in AZ, including reservations.. One strong piece
of advice is to NOT drive anyhting except the public (paved) roads in the
reservations unless you are a Native American Indian. The land is treated
as being part of a sovereign nation, and outsiders are tolerated if passing
through on the paved roads or headed to the new casinos.

The AZ-VJC is doing a run to Crown King May 1, planned as an overnighter but
easily done in one day. Crown King/Lake Pleasant is north of Phoenix.

Good luck and Njoy AZ!

Regarding driving on the reservations - most of the Indian Nations will allow
you to purchase a land use permit that lasts for a few days. With the permit
you are allowed access to the off-road trails that go through the
reservations. Of course, tread lightly is definitely taken to heart.
I ran into this issue when looking at doing some trails south of the grand
canyon through one of the reservations.
For more information just contact the particular nation directly.

Thanks Jon! I'll pound out a trip report later today for the folks that couldn't make it. Did anyone happen to get pics of the group going over those two little rocks with the small space between them just before lunch?

The Coves Cleanup was fun and very productive. Thanks Doug and everyone else who attended.

Subject: question about yesterday

Hello again

Since I made the run yesterday without a CB (I know, I know, but I have to
wait until payday to replace the one that was stolen), I didn't get to hear
the "Len's stuck on the hill" call. Missed my big chance to reply that
"reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." For my trail report, does
anyone remember what was actually said? I'd like to include it.

Thanks
