Jim Myers (Jeep Comanche) will be leading the Rim Country Four Wheelers
to Crown King on Saturday, 17 April 1999. My wife and/or I will be tail
ending this run. We will be leaving from the Wild Horse Bar at 9:00AM.
Anyone is welcome to attend.

I know AZVJC is running Crown King on May 1 and May 8, but if anyone
can't make that one, or just can't wait for it, they are welcome to come
on the 17th.

P.S. Wild Horse is on the corner of Carefree where it turns from West to
North towards Lake Pleasant, it's also kinda the corner of 99th Ave and
Carefree.

It was suggested that we meet at The Wild Horse. However, about 4 miles away is Campbells Mercantile & General Store. I have contacted them for info. The store is open 24 hours 7 days a week. There is a cafe there for anyone wishing to have a little breakfast before leaving. This is also a good place to get fuel, oil, water, air, etc, etc, etc,. They are located at 9098 W. Pinnacle Peak Rd. On the corner of 91st ave. and Pinnacle Peak Rd. This is just a sugestion. Thanks

The White Horse is more convenient due to the fact that it is where the
people coming from the East (74, Carefree Highway) and from the South
(99th Ave) meet. There will be twelve coming from the Rim Country Four
Wheelers (Payson.) (This is for the P4W run on this Sat., Apr. 17.)

I believe the AZVJC runs on May 1st and 8th are both meeting at the
trailhead, please correct me if I'm wrong Doug.

For those coming down from the Phoenix area,

Take I-10 East
Look for Grant road exit 256
get off there and turn right off the ramp
right into the Texaco. I'll be there.
(white 94 YJ with back soft-top)

How's 9 AM with everyone?

We will be passing my apartment on the
way to Reddington if anyone would like to
stash anything away while were out wheelin'
It will be safe there.

This will be an all day trip, we should be out
before dark (things can happen)
We will camp in Reddington Pass and for those
who wish for a motel that will be fine too.

Let me know who is coming so I can look for you!

Leah,

9a works for me. I found Reddington on the map and have a couple of
quick quesitons:

- I assume we'll be going from west to east-northeast...yes?

- Will we be exiting by old Redington? and is there a way to get over to
SR77 or SR79 for the trip back to Phoenix?

- Where's the pass in relation to Redington?

- CB channel?

Looking forward to it. See ya there.

Also...note to others from Phoenix...if ya want to travel down as a
group, we could hook up at I-10 and Queen Creek Rd (south of Firebird
Raceway). Just a thought.

Questions answered below.

>- I assume we'll be going from west to east-northeast...yes?

Assuming you are looking at the Arizona Atlas and Gazetteer look on page 67.
Find Tanque Verde Road (to the east edge of Tucson running East/West)
Follow it on the map to Redington Road. Redington Road is a dirt road that
climbs into the Pass between the Santa Catalina Mountains and Rincon
Mountains. We will be turning off where the roads cross between the O and R
in Forest. That turn is actually the entrance to the Loop Leah is planning
on leading. The loop will circle around and then come back out at the same
place we started.

>- Will we be exiting by old Redington? and is there a way to get over to
>SR77 or SR79 for the trip back to Phoenix?

The exit to the trail will be the same place as we started (detailed above)
From here you can run Sunrise back to Oracle and then head North on Oracle
to 79 to get back to Phoenix.

>- Where's the pass in relation to Redington?

The Pass is south to southwest of Redington the town.

>- CB channel?

We will be using channel 4 for the trip.

>Looking forward to it. See ya there.

We look forward to seeing everybody that can make it from Phoenix down here.
Let us know if you are planning on camping Saturday night and/or running the
local club run on Sunday (which is Rice Peak, off the backside of Mt.
Lemmon)

Also for a small preview of the trail we will be running you can visit my
web site. Click on Trail Pics and then choose Chivo Falls (dated January
1st) There are several pics there and there are some for the other Chivo
Falls link which have pictures from one section of the trail back to the
Falls. Here is the link.

I believe that's correct, though I've not organized this one. A good
assembly point is just past the entrance to the park, where the road
'T's (park entrance to the right, trails to the left)..there's a nice
flat spot for airing down, etc. a little way up the road (to the left).

For those that know of others...the '71 and prior CJ5 was 3" shorter, and
won't fit.
The '76 and later were wider, for wider axles. Likewise won't fit, but
thanks for thinking about it.

Subject: Tucson Run/Redington Loop Trip Report

A most excellent trip! It was a class 3+ and a healthy class 4 (if you
choose the tough spots), with some really challenging spots and some
great scenery. One of the nicest trips I've been on. I'd do this one
again in a heart beat. Thank Leah for leading this one, and thanks
Scott, Jeff and the others from the Tucson Chapter of AzVJC.

Those attending were Leah(YJ); Scott, Jeff and friends(YJ); Scott and
brother(TJ); and myself(TJ).

The first heavy challenge of the trip was a place called the Crack,
which offered 4 interesting ways down. The far right was too tough for
us, the middle 2 the easier ones, and the far left was the Crack, which
looked very intimidating but wasn't really that bad, with Jeff providing
some great spoting. You have to work your left wheels up high on a
quick sloping rock face, to make it. We all went down the crack and made
it fine.

The trail got easier after that for a bit, with some neat spots here and
there. We crossed a creek w/ quite a bit of water in it and had to climb
some rocks on the other side. Once these got wet, they provided for some
slippery fun.

We ended up at Chevo Falls for lunch...a really beautiful spot. The
falls are probably 50 feet up, and were running. We lunched to the right
of the falls in a nice shady spot in the rocks, and caught some of the
cool mist coming off the falls. The water in the pools below was really
pretty clear, and looked inviting for a swim.

At the falls we ran an obsticle (which we did after lunch) called the
Keyhole, which is pretty descriptive. Just before we got going, along
came some dune buggies, and one was driven by someone that had no
business behind the wheel. He ran up a hill above us, spinning his
wheels and spraying rocks down, esp. on Scott's YJ. Could have really
hurt someone, and done some damage. Some choice words were givin,
questioning his origin of birth, and where his head may have been during
that stunt :)

Anyway, the Keyhole was similar to the Crack, in that you had to ride
your left wheels high up on a rock face, but not so high as to slip off
the other side, and not too low so as to throw you into the rock. Good
spotting, and we were all through.

After the Keyhole we headed south (I believe), and had some great views
of the mountains around us. This area is covered by an impressive water
shed, and the creeks and washes had quite a bit of water in them. After
a while, we came across a beautiful spot, with cottonwoods in the canyon
and quite a bit of cool, clear water in the creek. There we were greeted
by a mixed group of sun worshipers. Hope they were using sunscreen, or
sitting will be a problem for them for a couple of days.

We followed this creek for a bit to the Rock Garden. A very, very rocky
stretch of trail. For those that have done Log Corral, it was like that,
only the rocks were more weathered and less sharp. I'd rate this a 5 on
the pucker scale.

After this we started heading out, and Geoff(Leah's husband) met us on
the trail in his CJ8. We made it back to the Crack, and had some fun
going up...though at that point, only Scott(YJ) was game enough to go up
it. The rest of us took the easy(er) routes.

A really great trip! Jeff took some pictures and will be posting them
soon. Looking forward to seeing them.

This is a clean up run set for next Sat., April 24. Trails are fine for
a stock Jeep, and there are some challenging hill climbs for those so
inclined.

I've taken care of the paperwork w/ the Forest Service, so we're all set
to go. Hopefully, one of the newspapers will run something this week on
it (probably a short side line note in the local section).

Please respond as to whose are coming, so I know how many maps to bring,
and to help organize the routes we'll take.

Thanks. Should be fun, and will do some good too. The area's been pretty
trashed.

We'll meet at 9am at Butcher Jones Park.

Two ways to get there:

1) Go north on Power Rd. (in east Mesa) - from US60. This becomes Bush
Highway at Red Mountain. It'll turn to the east...keep going...and will
turn to the north...keep going. Butcher Jones entrance will be on the
right.

2) Take SR87 north to Bush Highway...which will be on the right(east).
It'll be north of Ft. McDowell. Entrance to Butcher Jones will be on
your left, after a short while.

There are signs marking the entrance to the park on Bush Highway, from
either direction.

Subject: P4W Crown King report (Apr 17)

The original trip leader couldn't make this run due to medical problems,
so my wife ended up leading it in our '91 YJ, and I tail-ended in our
'90 Suburban. We had a total of ten vehicles - five (ten people) from
the Rim Country Four Wheelers (from Payson, a Chevy V6 CJ7, YJ, Bronco
II, Bronco, and Isuzu Amigo) one random Cherokee who saw the run on Rim
Country's web site, one really nice red TJ with a winch from AZ_VJC, and
another one from P4W.

The Classic Bronco club was running the same day, they were about fifty
strong. They were running 1/2 - 1 1/2 hours behind us. There wasn't
much water until up past the Playground area (flat area next to the
creek bed with the goof off hills.) The rocky area about 20-30 minutes
before the Playground was washed out a bit worse than last year (there
is a really clean bypass to the left.) We managed to get a full-size
Bronco stuck on there something fierce, breaking a 3-inch snatch strap
trying to get him up. A winch was needed, and it performed flawlessly,
pulling the TJ right down the hill towards the stuck Bronco.
Fortunately Suburbans make really good boat anchors, and we managed to
pull the Bronco up just as the Classic Bronco club was showing up. They
had someone break an axle on the hill, so we made our distance back.
Our Bronco ended up with a ripped off front license plate, a new dent on
a skid plate underneath, a bent front bumper, and a pretty well bent
rear bumper. Nothing too bad.

While we were unsticking our stuck Bronco, the two guys in the random
internet Cherokee got impatient and decided to go on alone, against the
trip leader's advice... You can probably guess where this is going.
About an hour or so down the road they were stuck pretty good on a
ledge, with a mountain face on one side, and a large drop on the other.
Since there was no bypass, we had no way to get in front of them to pull
them over. We had to yank them backwards off the ledge, and then had
them back up to a spot were we could get a vehicle around them to pull
them over if needed. They made it OK the second time.

That's about it for the run. The rough bar (on the left when you come
into town) was open. They were painting the one on the right (the one
with the really good steak sandwiches.) They told me it would be open
by May 1, which will be nice for AZ_VJC.

Thanks for the report, Dave. Looking forward to the Crown King trip in
several weeks. I won't be able to make May 1, but should be going on the
8th, and will likely camp out up near Bradshaw City, if anyone's
interested. Who's leading this trip? I can't recall from the old posts.
Has a time at assembly point been chosen yet?

Must back out of the coves clean-up. My radiator hose finally came in and is
slotted for this Saturday for install.
sorry to miss it - I was looking forward to this one. Guess I'll see everyone
on the May 8th Crown King overnighter.
