Does anyone know what years or models of Cherokees or Wagoneers had 727s? Most were TH400, but I'm sure that some had 727s. Maybe a particular engine option? Please help!

AMC switched to the 727 in 1980 (to the best of my knowlege/memory)
when they made this switch they also started using the new process transfer cases (driver side diff)
call me if you have further questions

Yes he is quite correct. I have done a lot of research on transmisisons in the last month or so as I want to put a 727 in my CJ........the 727s were put in FSJ's from 1980 to 1991. While they are internally the same as the Chrysler 727's the bell housing bolt patterns are different in the Jeeps. When they started using the NP xfer cases also that made the 727 easy to adapt to a D-300 transfer case without expensive adapters. The 727 is a heavy duty tranny according to most accounts I have read and was used in the monster HP and Torque muscle cars made by Chrysler.

I forgot, you asked about engine options........it was used with ALL V-8 applications. I have read conflicting stuff about what was used with the 258 6cyls some places have said the 727 was used in FSJ's and others said the 904/999 was used with the 6's. The 999 was used with 6 cyl and V-8 CJs, YJ's and TJ's (the YJ and TJ model was given a different desidnation like 30RH or something like that) (last V-8 from the factory in CJ was 1981) and the 904 which is considered a light duty was used in 4 cyls.

Although very few FSJs came with the 258, the 2 I have owned came with the 727. Many of the 727's used in the early 80's had the lock up torque converter.
When I asked a transmission shop, I was told that lock up/non lock up is the difference between 904/999.

Thanks guys,
You have figured out what I'm trying to do; D 300 behind a 727. 1980 Scouts came with 300s, but they are nearly impossible to find and have the goofy "Texas" bolt pattern. I figure Jeepers have stolen enough Scout axles, so a Scouter can rob a Jeep trans and transfercase:D :D :D .
