Hello everyone,
My family and my brother-in-laws family are wanting to go camping this coming weekend (Leave Friday the 13th, return Sunday the 15th). In any case, my brother-in-law wants to be able to do some fishing and stuff. Someone told him about Black river up in the White mountains. Can anyone give me any feed back on this area?
We were originally hoping to go some where that we could do some wheeling as well as camping and fishing, maybe some target shooting (the little ones want to check out the new .22). I wanted to go to Sheeps crossing but my brother-in-law is ****bound to go farther up north becaise he wants cooler weather. Any and all suggestions, recommendations etc. would be appreciated as always.
Thanks.

Spent some time on the Black River some years ago - good fishing - Wayco caught a trout on a fly line with his own tied Elk Hair Caddis fly. We spent alot of time fishing in our canoe on Reservation lake near there, I caught a large lake trout which tasted really good (normally I like to catch and release, but sometimes ya just got to eat it). Good camp spot on FR 68 on the West Fork of the black river "Diamond Rock" http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/southwst/apchcmp.htm#diamond%20rock

Have fun! It is a great area.

There is some great fishing up on the Black River and its forks, especially on the reservation. The camping is great and you can find spots where you wont see people for days.

Be sure to have proper permits if you are traveling, camping or fishing on the reservation.

Pick up a good map and find a remote road, near the river and you'll be in luck. Most of the roads are fire roads, however most roads into the main Black are 4x4, especially this time of year when the rains come. The roads will be extremely muddy, be prepared especially if you are traveling on the San Carlos side or Bonito praries.

Hang your food in a tree as well, lots of bears.

The Sheeps crossing I'm familiar with in the apache sitgreaves forest is closed due to road construction. Maybe there are two sheeps crossings in the state. The east and west forks of the black river are not too far from the forest sheeps crossing. Not much 4x4 up there really just forest roads. Very pretty, cool, has fishing, long drive for a weekend.

Funny you bring this up. I'm going July 20-23. I'll be on the upper West fork of the Black river with my UL spinner rig going for Apache Trout!

I've had a hellava time finding any maps of the area until I found a USGS Quad of it.....WOW!

Go for the Apache trout if you can, they can only be found there in the White Mts, just be sure to have your trout stamp

Edit; Oh yea, there are several road closures for reconstruction, do a little home work before you leave.

The sheeps crossing that I am talking about is up on the Verde River.

As for doing home work, that is why I came to my fellow Jeepers;)

If anyone would be able to provide me with some good, recent insight it would be the members of this club.

I agree with Hardline, Diamond Rock is a great place to camp and the Black is a beautiful area. You may see some Bighorn Sheep in that area if your looking up. Enjoy.

If you do go to Reservation lake try to remember to get your permit a head of time. Theres is a store on Reservation lake you can get the permit from. The problem we had was they didn't open until 11am and we lost the entire morning to fish waiting for the store to open.

Permits can be bought in several places, including Hon Dah outdoor shop and gas station off the 260. Also, if traveling through Globe to the San Carlos area you can get permits at the last Circle K on the way up to Point of Pines.

The farther up the Black you go the better the trout fishing. The farther downstream you go "closer to the confluence of the Black and the White the better the small mouth bass fishing gets. I belive target shooting on the Res. is illegal but Iam not sure about that. Make sure you get your San Carlos special use Black river permits as the rangers often block the road out and check. Have fun and be prepared for a long drive.

Target shooting is illegal on the White Mountain and San Carlos reservations.

Rule of thumb is that shooting or carrying on a reservation is a NO NO. They dont like the white man to have guns. Just make sure to contact res police to see if it is illegal but i doubt it is legal.

we are heading up to west fork today. if I remember right to get to the campground you go around big lake to the stop sign then turn left about 10 miles to the camp ground. it is not on the res.we are leaving this afternoon and will return on monday. if you are there look for the blue f250 with the nomad travel trailer and stop by for a beer.

Me thinks you should be ready for RAIN. The west fork is a good choice, but be ready for some cool weather and rain. We got a good one last night here in Heber.
