Perspective: There have been approximately 10 lightning-caused fires on the Tonto NF in the last 24 hours.

MYRTLE fire, reported earlier today, IS NOW CONTAINED - JULY 8, 9:30 PM

SCRABBLE fire in the Mazatzal Wilderness, approximately 13 miles SW of Pine, AZ, now 165 acres

Historic note: According to Steve Webb, Center Manager, Phoenix Interagency Dispatch Center: “We believe this is the first time we have ever ordered smokejumpers for a wildfire [Scrabble fire] on the Tonto National Forest. The inaccessibility of the terrain in the Mazatzal Wilderness has made this necessary.”

Scrabble fire on Tonto National Forest
PHOENIX (July 8, 2007) – 9:30 PM


Summary: The Scrabble fire, burning near the Hard Scrabble Canyon in the Mazatzal Wilderness, 13 miles SW of Pine, Arizona, was reported by a Lookout Tower about 1:15 pm Saturday.

Historic note: According to Steve Webb, Center Manager, Phoenix Interagency Dispatch Center: “We believe this is the first time we have ever ordered smokejumpers for a wildfire on the Tonto National Forest. The inaccessibility of this terrain in the Mazatzal Wilderness has made this necessary.”

Location: Near the Hard Scrabble Canyon in the Mazatzal Wilderness, 13 miles SW of Pine, Arizona.

Fuels: The Scrabble fire is burning in a mixture of fuel types: pinyon pine and juniper, brush, grass
