I did it several weeks ago, w/o a problem. Not to say it can't happen,
but I'd think you'd be fine. There are some very tough spots that do
have a greater chance for damage, but these can be bypassed.

I'll be replying directly to you also, in case this doesn't go through.

Count me in for the Crown King run. The dirt road on the way down the north side probably wouldn't be to fun at night. I haven't been up the south side yet.

Would May 1 be acceptable to the group? Any time in April is good too.

I'll be in Parker for the ASA4WDC Q2 Delegates Meeting -- and some 4-wheeling. Parker has some really awesome trails that are worthwhile checking out. Pencil in the next Desert Splash on your calendars. It usually happens the second week in November. The Parker 4-Wheelers are a great bunch.

Subject: Directions to Gillette, Tip Top and Terminator

Tip top is about 10 miles from the pavement. Allow 1.5 -2 hrs each way. A
stock vehicle should have no problems making it all the way. The Agua Fria
was quite low and caused no problems for us. It was almost still where we
crossed. If it is flowing briskly ( it was last year), be careful!

The road north of the Agua Fria is shown on the USGS Black Canyon City Quad.

1. Exit Table Mesa West off I -17 (Mile 236) to frontage road North. [33
58.082, 111 07.741]
2. Continue north (right) at Mining sign [ 33 59.129, 112 08.728]
3. Turn Left at "New River Sand and Gravel" sign [ 33 59.653, 112 08.908]
4. Stay on main road & cross the Agua Fria river. [ 34 00.883, 112 09.777]
5. Turn left at the first major intersection. [ 34 00.930, 112 09.885]
This is Gillette. There are only a few brick walls and burms NW of this
intersection.
6. At the next intersection one road goes west across the river (this
intersects with the route you took back at step 2). Take the other road to
the North up over the hill in the distance. [ 34 00.955, 112 10.000]
7. Continue north at the next intersection [ 34 01.195, 112 10.773]
8. Over the hill, the Terminator trail intersects this road on the east side
[ 34 01.520, 112 11.08] . You exit downhill to the creek bed. It follows
along the creek bed roughly parallel to the road. You can check it out for a
ways and come back out - It will test your suspension.
9. Horse corrals. Go left (West) [ 34 02.071, 112 11.584]
10. Intersection with a road from the south at a creek bed. Continue North
(right) across the creek. [ 34 01.643, 112 13.604]
11. If you go thru a bull pen you are on the right track. [ 34 02.156, 112
13.934]
12. Tip Top miner shack. [ 34 02.910, 112 14.987]

Tip Top extends for about a 1/2 mile on both sides of the creek. Approx
1500 people once lived there. Most buildings have tumbled down now. There
are a number of mine shafts and air shafts, so watch your step.

I'll post more info and pictures to my web site after Moab Easter jeep
Safari.

Love to go, but the ZJ has a couple more items that need to be looked at before getting back on the trail. Nothing major: I have a brake fluid leak <:-(> and the tailpipe needs to be rerouted (got a new rear bumper) <:-)>

I'll be going to the Waliapai 4-Wheelers 4x4 Rally in Wickiup April 16-18. This is a timed rally on a relatively easy trail.

I've got the topo maps to go explore Gillette and Tip Top mines. I've been
told it's a 1.5-2 Hr ride each way from Table Mesa Rd. which is about 10 min
North of Phoenix on I-17 (just north of New River). Supposed to be no
problem with stock vehicle.

If there are no other major rides planned for this Sat, I will be taking this
one. Anyone interested ... please e-mail.

Regards,
Eric
