Last time I had lockers was at Frank Borman Junior High School, and
Maryvale High School, in the 1970's. I've been meaning to get them
for my jeep, though, I think. Do lockers go inside the differentials?

OK - this is planned as an overnight up in the Sierra Anchas, via Cherry
Creek. The trail is relatively easy, and would be fine for stock Jeeps,
w/ good tires (I've done it in a slightly modified Blazer). While Cherry
Creek trail is not particularly challenging, the scenery is amoung the
nicest I've seen in this part of Az...and there are some side trails
that look to be promising for exploration. Cherry Creek will take us up
into the pines, and there are some nice camping spots that'll accomodate
a good size group. We'll be up around 5000 to 6000 feet, so it'll get
cool at night.

Suggested Meeting Place: Gas station just west of the intersection of
US60 and SR 88, between Miami and Globe. Sorry, but I can't remember
what type of station it is. It's on the right (south) side of US60.
(look for a white TJ - I'll try to get there early). We can tank up
there. Those w/ an extra Jerry Can may want to bring it, though it's
probably not necessary. It'll take us the better part of a day to get to
the top.

Suggested Meeting time: How's 9a sound??

Things to bring: Water(always); food; fire wood; warm clothes; stove, if
you have it; trash bags; and general camping stuff.

While it's still a bit early, those planning to go, please post a note,
so we can keep track of how many are interested.

Thanks

ARB's front and rear

So far, I like them very much. Had 'em for about six weeks or so.

> how does it handle on road?
Perfect. They run as open diffs on the road, so there is no affect on
handling.

> have you noticed any tire ware?
Nope, and there shouldn't be any, per above.

> how's the noise?
The only noise they make is the air releasing when they're disengaged.

> cost, and where did you get it?
The ARB's ran bout $549 each, and the compressor was $200. I did all the
wiring, switch mounting and compressor mounting, and 4 Wheeler Supply
did the locker install, w/ r/p swap. Labor ran $600 for both
diffs...locker install, new bearings install, and ring/pinion install.
Very happy w/ the job they did.
>

Off road the ARB's are great, since you can turn 'em off. With the front
engaged, the steering is heavy, w/ the wheels wanting to drive the Jeep
straight ahead, so I run w/ the front off most of the time, unless
really needed. I use the rear more, and w/ the rear locked, I'm able to
do most obsticles.

Getting ready to install a Lockrite.

> how do you like it?

People I've talked to said they are noisy.

> how does it handle on road?

Like most auto lockers they have occisional quirks. Noise as they
lock/unlock, shifting in the rear, etc.

> have you noticed any tire ware?

Let you know once I put them in but I haven't heard anyone report a
problem.

> how's the noise?

Friend has one in front, ratches in parking lots. Causes funny steering
under power on hard pavement but no problems off road.

> cost, and where did you get it?

Now the good part. They are cheap. $235 from Rack & pinion service.
If you have enough mechanical ability to change the gear oil you can
intstall them into the open differentials (they replace the spider
gears) in a couple hours. If you have the factory traclock limited slip
you will need a new carrier about $50. Replacing the carrier moves it
out of the catagory of the do-it-yourself though.

Only downside I've heard about the lockrite is when running taller than
35" with V-8's they can break the carrier.

There is also a new spider gear replacement locker coming from trac tech
(the people that make the Detroit). It uses clutches to cut down on the
harshness of the locking and unlocking action. It is called the
gearless locker. They haven't been out long enough for me to hear any
feedback on them. You might want to just put a lockrite in the rear and
wait to see what happens with the gearless locker.

It takes about 1-1/2 hours to go from my house (N Mesa) to Globe-Miami. The distance between Superior and Globe-Miami is only about 20 miles.

Bring the cold weather gear! I just about froze in Winkelman (2700 ft elevation) last weekend! It's a good thing I had 2 sleeping bags with me.

See ya Saturday!

Not necessarily, but I have several I know of that work work well for
our group...next to a stream, not too far from a waterfall.

> Can we build a cooking fire there?
Yes. You may want to bring some firewood w/ you. I picked up a couple of
bundles I'll be bringing. There should be firewood up there, though it
may be a little wet.

Better part of a day to get to the top.

As Linda said, pack some cold weather gear. Weather report shows sunny
skies, but it will get cold at night.

It's north/northeast of Globe. We'll take SR88 toward Roosevelt Lake.
About 2/3rds of the way there, we'll head off on the Globe-Young Highway
(which is mostly a dirt road). A short while after having crossed the
Salt River, we'll take a FR (don't have a map handy, so I don't have the
number), and will head east. This FR will hook up w/ Cherry Creek Road,
which then heads generally north. The road is mostly to the west of
Cherry Creek and heads up the valley. We'll take this up to the Sierra
Anchas, where Cherry Creek Road will intersect w/ the Globe-Young
Highway. We'll head south alone the G-Y road for a short distance to
some good camping sites, that are near some very nice water falls.

While the trail we'll be taking is not particularly challenging, the
scenery is just fabulous.

Hope this helps.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to cancel out of this Saturday's run. Too
many commitments and not enough time. I think I was the only one who
wasn't planning on camping out anyway, so I would have been making the
return trip alone. Next week I start working nightshift and 60 hour

far in advance to start planning? Maybe a Crown King run before summer?

Ok all,

It's been MIGHTY QUIET the last week or so. There's supposed to be an
overnighter this weekend, but I haven't heard hardly a peep this month
about it. The trash run (the Coves) has dropped off the discussions, and
nobody is looking for a new run. What's going on?

Anybody out there?

Has a campsite been chosin for cheery creek? Are campfires alowed there? What is the distance from west Mesa to the meeting site?

I have seen other Jeeps driving around with there soft top bungee corded to the roll bars. Can you do that with a Wrangler soft top also? I wouldn't mind being able to bring mine along.

For those of you not on the Cherry Creek trip but needing a quick fix:

I'll be taking a short (approx 2hr) 4 wheeling trip out of Cave Creek. The
trip is not very tough, about a 2-2.5 rating. There are 2-3 short river
crossings. General location is N/W of Cave Creek (Skull Messa and Skunk
Ridge).

I'll be at the Jackalope Cafe, 6920 E. Cave Creek Rd. in Cave Creek at 8:30
a.m. for breakfast (with the whole family) and leaving from the Jackalope at
9:30 a.m. The cafe is located near the end of the Cave Creek main drag on the
left hand (West) side of Cave Creek Rd. I may have some "rookies" from work
join me in their 4x4's.

If anyone is interested in tagging along, please shoot me an e-mail and I'll
watch out for you.

Eric

This is a class 4 trail (in the Mineral Mountain area) to Woodpecker
mine. For those not interested in the class 4, there is a class 2-3 road
to the mine also, so we could hook up there for lunch. If desired, we
could press on to Ajax mine via 2 parallel routes...one a class 4 and
one a class 2-3.

When: Sat. March 27 at 8:30

Where: the gas station (Texaco?) at Florence Junction/US60

So far, GregC, LindaL, myself, and friend-JimK are planning on going.

Subject: Back Door Trail to Woodpecker Mine and points north

This is a class 4 run in the Mineral Mountain area, but an alternate
trail can be taken that's a class 2+ to light 3 for those interested.
The Back Door trail (class 4) will take us to Woodpecker Mine. An
Alternate road (class 2, light class 3) goes to the same mine if people
want to do it. We can have lunch at the mine. From there, we can
continue (if we want) to Ajax mine via class 4 or alternate class 2-3,
and go as far as we like.

When: March 27 (Sat)

Where: Assemble at the gas station in Florence Junction (Texaco?)
on US60 at 8:00.

So far it'll be GregC, LindaL, myself, and a friend JimK (CJ7). We'll be
doing Back Door.

Anyone else up for it?

Hi everyone,
Just join last week. I live in the Phoenix area and have a 98TJ with minor mods (skids, tires, TC Air Tube, TC Rock-its & coil lift).

I noticed a Crown King run being planned but I am not sure how this works. Who sets dates and times? Does anyone post trips in the calendar?

Any info would be appreciated....

Rick

Welcome to AzVJC. As to your question on trips...anyone can post and
organize a run. Sometimes it's spur of the moment....sometimes planned
well in advance. Not too many rules...just having fun and treading
lightly.

Welcome to the group! As Doug said, things are pretty informal around
here. With so many members, there's usually no shortage of runs in the
works. Sometimes there's a well organized outing, and sometimes it's
just a note from someone saying they're heading out and you can join them
if you want. Either way, it's always a good time. I'm going to be out
of commission until May (working long and irregular hours) but I'm
looking forward to joining the group on a run as soon as possible after
that.

Greetings from Tucson! There are a few of us here that want
to go. If I can get enough people to show up we will caravan
up to the meeting place together. I will let you know as the
date gets a little closer.

Tucson meeting place is: Oracle and Magee in front of
Trader Joe's. I will be leaving at 6:30 AM from there!
I use CB channel 4.

Doug, is there a vehicle requirement (tire size, lockers, so on)
for the class 4 trip you can recomend?

Thanks, Leah 94YJ
